I would love to See the brand go back to NES, NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM. Maybe add the HD at the end. The NES HD. I would love that.

So, is there any truth to the rumors of Nintendo buffing up the WiiU specs as of lately? I heard that the latest devkits developers received are more powerful than the first ones. Probably Nintendo wanting to be more future proof? (if the rumor is true, of course).

I remember before they decided to do a universal branding for the N64, they were going to continue the Famicon name and call it Ultra Famicon in Japan. So, presumably, the US version would have been call the Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System. Maybe it's time to use that. UNES.

Well, specs are always subject to change up until the product is finalized, so it's a possibility. Even then, with Xbox 720 being spec'ed at around 20% higher than Wii U, I think the console is still in a good position.

I like the Ultra Famicom/UNES suggestion. It would give off the vibe that Nintendo was going back to it's roots and more sincere in winning back the 'hardcore' gamers.

I see no point in revisiting their past naming conventions.

If they are in fact renaming the Wii U, then it will probably be something that more effectively communicates it's new functionality as well as the fact that it's not just an add-on to the Wii.

Because Nintendo's systems have gotten worse names with every generation since SNES.

Super Nintendo? Cool name.
Nintendo 64? Ok, not really creative though.
Gamecube? Uh...quite literal and not really cool.
Wii? Creative but lame
WiiU? *shudders*

Well, we got a Station and a Box. Those are pretty safe. The former is a play on the term workstation, and the latter is.....a box. Not too cutesy, yet not so hardcore that other demographics would shy away from them.

I always thought "Playstation" sounded like some kind of jungle gym.

It was just a suggestion. I know it is very unlikely and it would just cater mostly to Nintendo fans.

Agreed.

I have a feeling they might try to still implement Wii in the titles somehow

WiiDS, obviously. :oldrazz:

Team Ninja: Wii U development comparable to PS3/360, hardware always changing, DOA5 possible
January 30th, 2012 Posted in 360, News, PS3, Wii U

Team Ninja has been one of Wii U’s early supporters. The studio will be bringing a unique version of Ninja Gaiden III to the console when it launches later this year.

Ninja Gaiden III director Fumihiko Yasuda and Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi were interviewed in the February issue of Nintendo Gamer, and both men sounded positive about Wii U development.

First, Yasuda commented on Wii U development in general. He said:

“It’s very easy to develop for. We’re finding it very similar to develop for Wii U as for the Xbox 360 and PS3. …They’ve asked us what we would like to see from the hardware, and when we give them feedback we can see that they’re definitely listening to it and making changes. The hardware is still constantly changing.”

Hayashi then commented on the Wii U’s unique controller:

“I think it’s a really big deal that you have a screen right there in your hands; it’s a feature that’s really unique.”

Hayashi once again commented on how Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword will connect to the Ninja Gaiden III on Wii U:

“The Wii U’s touch control is just like the DS’s. We released a Ninja Gaiden game, Dragon Sword, on DS, so we want to introduce some elements from that into the Wii U version.”

Finally, Hayashi was asked if Dead or Alive 5 would be possible on Wii U. Although he wouldn’t commit to anything, he did say that “we’re definitely keeping other platforms in mind for DOA5.”

“We’re thinking about all sorts of things. Right now, our Wii U development is focused just on Ninja Gaiden, but we’re definitely keeping other platforms in mind for DOA5.”

DOA5 would be nice! It's already getting Tekken from Namco.

^ Good to see Nintendo is listening to 3rd parties.

I honestly can't see how Wii is any lamer than something as boring as Super Nintendo.

I feel more easy now that Nintendo and its hardware are playing nicely with third parties.

As for the name game, I'm used to WiiU but if they change it I just hope it conveys the message they want and sounds good.

i don't see me playing COD on WiiU. I'm probably will still use XBOX/PS future gen for hardcore games, and like always use Nintendo for exclusive games like Mario and Zelda.

I think what Nintendo needs to do is bring back some Nintendo favorites to HD and Gameplay, like Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Banjo Koozie. Donkey Kong Country Returns, ok game, but it's not appealing to a hardcore gamer. Donkey Kong 64 was an awesome game, they need to bring back that platform.

DK64, IMHO was a huge pain in the Ass. I hated going through every level more than once as every ape.

That was one of my favorite aspects of the game. You went through it multiple times but there was something different to do for each character. That's someone I've always really liked with games, one of the reasons I love Banjo-Tooie. I prefer having fewer worlds you you revisit multiple times than more that are just one-and-done.

Speak for yourself.

If it has even a fraction of the charm of the SNES games, I would love to play it.

Also DK64 wasn't very good. Although I did spend more time playing its multiplayer than it ever deserved. :/

The best part of DK64 was jumping off of that mountain in the hub world. And even that may just be me mashing up different games in my memory.

Is anyone hoping SquareEnix returns their main titles back to Nintendo. Not the Side storyies like FF:Chronicles but a main title like FFXIII.

Also, a bit of topic. To Capcom. Listen up. It's time to bring Breath of Fire back. And the WIIU/UNES/NESHD is the platform to do it in.

Considering that XIII and XIII-2 were released on both PS3 and 360, there is no reason that the next FF can't be multi-platform and be on the WiiU. It was obviously technical reasons why there wasn't a Wii version of XIII.

I don't really care of Square puts another mainline Final Fantasy game on the Wii U, but just not at the expense of the other platforms.

Very interesting. :woot:

Nintendo director tab CryEngine 3 technology
David Vicente | 31-01-2012 a las 16:47 | Wii U

He has previously worked at Crytek, Lionhead and Ignition.

In its transition to HD, Nintendo is getting fatter templates studies with seasoned and experienced people in these types of developments. Recently, Retro Studios expanded its staff with some employees of Vigil Games, Naugthy Dog, Electronic Arts and Red Fly among others. For its part, Nintendo has signed Mark Atkinson, former chief technology officer of Crytek, specializes in CryEngine 3.

Atkinson's resume is enviable. Following his time at Crytek, he worked as Consultant Software Engineer for Ignition London and later as a Specialist Graphics Engine Optimization for Lionhead Studios. Since last September, Atkinson works for Nintendo Consultant Software Engineer.

One of his most important achievements in the sector has been the adaptation of CryEngine 3 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This graphics engine developed based on PC has been a laborious process until its arrival at consoles with Crysis 2. It is not known where Atkinson is working now, although there may be advised to Nintendo in the creation of new hardware, as Team Ninja.

Retro Studios hires Naughty Dog, Vigil Games staffers, working on 'crowning achievement'
Jan 10, 2012 by RawmeatCowboy

Well, things just got very interesting. Retro Studios has picked up two staffers, one a former Naughty Dog dev and the other a former Vigil Games employee. Eric Kozlowsky is the former Naughty Dog staffer, and he seems super excited for his project.

Alas I am going to shelve it for a little while as I am going to work on another project that I am super excited about. I can't talk about it too much but if all goes well it might just be one of my crowning achievements as an artist....

Retro also grabbed devs from Red Fly and Moonbot Studios. Something big must be going on!

I don't even care if Square ever puts a FF on the WiiU... not after XIII and XIII-2 (which, to be fair I've only played the demo but even with that.. big ol' MEH).

Yeah, I'm with you, but I'm still holding out hope that Versus XIII will be as awesome as it seems.
