With that confidence, presense and build, its just Superman walked out of the comics.

I think Routh represents alot of potential but he needs to make some major improvements before the next film.

To prove it isnt impossible, look at Reeve's audition footage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBuFOy62NI0

Reeve has a smaller build (smaller chest) than Routh and a smaller neck just like Routh's in this.

Could Routh ever make the physical transformation that Chris did? Is Singer or WB holding him back?

Or is it totally impossible for Routh to be as good as Reeve? To ever have the presense he had?

Discuss.

I'm done comparing Routh to Reeves. Most folks don't compare Bale to Keaton or Maguire to Hammond, so why do Routh the injustice? Reeves should be respected and remembered, for forever creating the archetype for all succssors of the role, to follow. No doubt about that. But dwelling on the "he isn't Reeves" factor, gets old fast. Reeves has passed on, God bless his soul. And even if not, he was too old to play the role by now. A new person would have to have risen in his place. So is the way of life. Reeves pioneered the role and owned it, but other people have just as much potential, to fill the role of The Man of Steel.

It isnt just about that. Routh is supposed to be playing an evolved version of Reeve's character, so essentially he should play a better Superman than Reeve....comparisons are inevitable in that regard.

I want him to be better than Reeve ultimately for the reason that things should get better over time, and not regress.

I'm hoping he makes a major transformation like Chris did between his audition and the films.

First of all..routh should be his own version..not a clone..hopefully.. this will be come apparent in the sequel.. i'm thinkning by the end of the next film.. will anybody other than Reeve ever match up to Routh.

I agree Routh should be somewhat similar to Reeve because it's a sequel. At the same time I think every actor should put his own stamp on the character. If you look at the comics, artists don't try to draw him the same way Shuster did, they draw him the way he appears in their minds.

Since it would probably be unethical to post footage from this film at this point;

Here's the video of Routh's casting showing footage of him as Superman to compare to the footage I linked of Reeve;

Essentially I think they just need to give him a workout plan like Reeve's from his audition to the films. One that makes his neck and chest wider, like it did for Chris drastically.

Acting-wise, he needs to be LOUDER. I think Brandon can do a deep voice, but its always soft spoken.

He needs to have the presense and confidence to deliver lines like "TOO LATE LUTHOR."

And then, he could be in a position to challenge Reeve for the number #1 Superman spot.

Theres something else to note. Reeve's face is noticeably thin in the audition footage too, like Brandon's is now.

However, watch the closeup of his face when he blows the fortress up in the Superman II clip, its alot wider and makes him look powerful and stronger.

It may have been a result of the mass he put on.

I'm hoping the same can happen for Brandon.

I guarantee, it will make him appear as old as Chris did (despite them being the same age) and not make Brandon look so young.

They are two different people and two different takes on the character. Reeve captured Superman of the comics, and incorported all of the things that the comic book version of both Clark and Superman did. Routh is playing a guy from the midwest, with midwest values, which is what Clark Kent/Superman is. I do think that the script/lack of dialog shorted Routh on what he could have done with the character.

Reeve was very skinny in the audition it looked as if he was anorexic and still had a wider chest then Routh has now. Reeve looked as if had no muscle in the audition. Reeve is naturally big, but was VERY skinny. Which Routh was not during his audition. Routh might get bigger but you are comparing it wrong.

He so did not have a bigger chest frame than Routh in that audition.

Reeve's size in the films just came from hard work that Routh didnt get the chance to do... yet.

I think Routh has potential but I dont want WB to try to push a thinner, sleeker Superman again.

That was mandated from a Survey amongst women that WB did and not Superhero fans.

It depends, as I see Routh playing a Superman that's similar but will ultimately be different from Reeve's. Already saw hints of this in the movie.

And I'm happy for that. Instead of him being the next Christopher Reeve, how about him being the first Brandon Routh?

Funniest thing ever. Comparing Maguire to Hammond is like comparing Babe Ruth to a tee-ball player. You just cannot compare the two. Hammond was as far away from the character of Peter Parker as you can get. They might as well of cast a 40 year old.

I think it's fair to compare Routh to Reeve. Although Reeve will always be the man, I thought Routh did a fine job, and was the only thing I liked about Superman Returns.

No, Reeve did his own thing and did an original take on the character. Routh is a bad copy of him.

It all depends on how he's written and directed. You can hardly blame Routh for acting like a "bad copy" of Reeve, because that's what the movie called for him to do. People would be busting Christian Bale's chops just the same if BB was made to be a copy of Keaton's Batman.

That being said, I definitely want to see him make the part his own in the next one. Depends on whether or not they let him.

Hopefully Routh will get a few projects under his belt so when he comes back for II he'll have more practice and experience in him, and therefore we'll see the confidence from Reeve's version.

It kinda plays well in SR that Superman appears a little unsure and downtrodden. He's returned from a broken world that he had some hope for to a world and people that has moved on, not to mention that he was nearly killed.

In the next one, we should see a more upbeat and confident Superman.

Why does that have to be a joke? Some people are able to move foward, with the progress of the world. I don't feel that Routh was better, but I think his performance equaled Reeves portrayal, and not just because it was written to mirror it. Then again, everybody mirrors Reeve. Even Dean Cain admitted that he model his Superman on Reeves. That is just the natrual order of the character, because although Christopher Reeves was not the first, he is the one who truly defined the role. Much like Superman himself, is not the first superhero, but the character and his book have defined the genre as a whole.

That's a joke right ?

No, I am 100% serious. He looks and sounds more the part of how I would invision Superman.

Reeve was trying to play it campy.

Routh seems to be trying his own route, straighter except when required by Singer/the script. I think he was a wonderful Clark but didn't get nearly enough time to shine in this part of the role. And while he was in the suit quite a bit, he had to deal with that script, and that would suck the life out of just about anyone (unless they played it campy). I'm hoping the next script gives him a lot more screen time, a lot more lines, and a lot more interaction with Lex or whoever else the villain is. And PLEASE, a different Lois, so we can get some on-screen chemistry going that isn't hostile.

I honestly don't see much of Reeve's looks in Routh, but their voices are sometimes similar.

I also hope the next movie gets Routh's eyes to be blue consistently - or to use brown when he's not using his powers/charging and change his eyes to blue when he is (an earlier suggestion).

In my books, he's very much Reeve. The entire time I was watching SR, I couldn't shake the fact that I felt like I was watching Christopher Reeve all over again.
