"Two-time Academy Award nominee Will Smith is the most powerful actor on the planet, according to an annual list by America's Newsweek magazine. The Independence Day hunk has eclipsed last year's winner Tom Cruise and previous regular winner Tom Hanks. Newsweek spoke to a host of studio chiefs and film producers anonymously for fear of offending other stars. Smith was chosen because of his huge box office success and his ability to tackle any genre - sci-fi I, Robot, action comedy Men In Black or drama The Pursuit Of Happyness. Following behind was Johnny Depp at two, Ben Stiller at three, Brad Pitt at four and Cruise at five."

Wow, Will Smith plays Will Smith in every movie and he gets a title like this? Yet another reason why Hollywood is laughable. Yet more evidence why money is the big factor in what defines an "actor" in Hellywood.

Granted I haven't seen Pursuit of Happyness, but one good dramatic role hardly makes you better than everyone else on the planet. I, Robot was plain bad, and he was yet another version of the Will Smith Persona in that movie. Men in Black was ok, but more mediocre than good. And anyone could have done that role, IMO. Interesting how Tommy Lee Jones gets no recognition for this movie, despite playing a more complicated (and better acted) character.

I am not denying he's an ok actor, but he is FIRST and FOREMOST a star. There are plenty of better actors out there making better movies, but since they don't make the green, they don't make the lame magazine covers with "GREATEST ACTOR EVER" emblazoned on it.

Of course that same lame list has Ben Stiller on it.

Solid, your one of those people I love to hate... You try to masquerade your inadquacy of unique intellectual thought by attacking "commoners" and those supposely below you... Will Smith makes entertaining films, people like to see films because there entertaining, do the math... He has power because his films constantly make money, it's not saying he's better. Please grow up, everyone is laughing at you :(

Movies, your narcism is showing itself through projection.

Don't you have somewhere else to go to gloat or boast or make up for your real-life inadequacies?

By the way, don't accuse someone else of being incapable of thought when you can't even spell "inadequacy", ok?

Thanks.

Snake, I think you're confusing "most powerful" and "greatest actor". I think the article is just saying he has power in Hollywood because of the amount of tickets his movies continually sell, power to do things like cast your own son in a movie along side you.
Personally I cant really stand Smith, I agree with you, it's just always more of the same. To me his his last good role was in Six Degrees of Seperation.

Yeah, but they should change it to 'star', not actor if they want to convey that. When they say 'actor', you think of thespian worth, something IMO Smith doesn't have a whole helluva lot of.

z0mG I misspelt a word, z0mG I da stoopid!!!!!

Did you just use the same insult I hurled at you... Gawd you suck at this... But seriously all your posts are usually about how inferior everything is, it's truely pathetic. Will Smith makes entertaining films and rarely produces a bad film, hence why he's the most powerful, you take that as some reason to bash Hollywood, hence why you suck :)

P.S. I agree Will Smith plays the same part all the time...

You should really stick to the topic instead of making yourself feel even more superior to everyone else by insulting posters. Isn't that some sort of TOS violation on this board? If you can't resist venting your frustrations out on someone instead of discussing a topic, maybe you should go away? Its not even like I went all off on Smith. I introduced an article and presented my opinion.

And what do I suck at? Antagonizing? Sorry, I don't have your practice and experience at doing so, nor was I even making an attempt unlike yourself. You're simply not worth taking any thought to bashing.

I dont know, I think Smith is a good actor, his dramatic roles have suceeded. Its the action/comedy bit that is really over used and almost a caricature of Smith himself, its really tired but the general public loves it for some unknown reason.
Im looking forward to I am Legend because of the original story and Lawerence directing but oh how I fear for it.:csad:

I discuss the topic did I not?

Insulting you was merely a fun way of making the time go by :)

Will Smith plays himself like most actors do... He manages to get by on his on-screen charisma, however it only really works with tongue-in-cheek movies such as MIB, Independence Day, Hitch, etc... It was almost painful watching him in I, Robot which should of been a grim detective noir type story ala Blade Runner, however the infusion of Will Smith crappy one-liners and needless action turned it into a B-Movie Crapfest. I haven't seen either Ali or Pursuit of Happyiness, but the man needs to develop some range in terms of his acting, show us a character who isn't that perky son-of-a-***** ready for anything.

Does this satisfy you, Solid Snake :)

That you reveal your hypocrisy by insulting me for being a bit harsh on Smith (or attacking commoners, as you put it) and then turning around and attacking Smith yourself? Sure does! :woot:

How was I hypocritical? I never said that I thought Smith was a great actor nor was I attacking you for being harsh on Smith. I just thought your connection between Hollywood sucking and Smith being most powerful was incredulous. I didn't say your opinion was worthless, I just don't like when people consider hollywood "stupid", pandering to the masses, or other elitist thinking of that sort. I agree Will Smith isn't the greatness, however his films are entertaining and he's like Tom Cruise he always manages to pick good scripts.

Smith=money,he's a decent actor with huge charisma that the general public love, his job title is actor thus he is the most powerful actor in the world.

Oh and since you to fella's seem to be even i guess you can leave your spat at that ok ?

Had you seen Pursuit of Happyness or Ali, you wouldn't be saying that.

that first post is pretty awful. the rationale is stupid since the ability of the actor has nothing to do with the reasoning for choosing will smith as the most powerful actor.

Premiere Magazine's 100 Most Powerful People in Hollywood is the only list to look at (and the pioneer), but they're just an online site now. :(

There is so much wrong with that I had better stop now before I get booted again. Where was Jazzy Jeff ranked?

Will Smith is actually a very good actor, as he's shown in Pursuit, Ali and Six Degrees of Separation, he just happens to like doing fun movies mixed in.

Solid Snake just has a major chip on his shoulder and equates high popularity with no quality.

Of course Will Smith movies make alot of money...cause most of them are big budget special effects movies, that's why. I don't care to see In the Pursuit Of Happiness, cuase I don't wanna see a movie about a homless guy walking around with his kid.

Of course Will Smith movies make alot of money...cause most of them are big budget special effects movies, that's why.

And now, he's gotten to a point where he can do a romantic comedy (Hitch), or a drama (Pursuit of Happyness), and even those movies mode well beyond a hundred million dollars each. He's more than proven that he doesn't need big budget effects to draw in audiences. More and more, he's proving that people want to see him, and they'll be more than satisfied with that and nothing else.

I mean, Jesus, the man's done twelve movies in twelve years, and of the twelve, NINE of them have made over a hundred million dollars. And even when you look at a movie like Bad Boys, that movie made back three times its budget, which was only about 23 million). Anyone one working in Hollywood today have a better average than that?

I don't care to see In the Pursuit Of Happiness, cuase I don't wanna see a movie about a homless guy walking around with his kid.

That's not the whole point of the movie. But if you really don't intend on seeing the more, just don't be one of these other people complaining that he has no range, if you refuse to even see movies that deviate from his usual formula.

Smith does his thing, plain and simple. The people who clowned him for doing Wild Wild West over the Matrix can't hold it over his head anymore.

KenK explained why he is. It has nothing to do with quality Solid. It has to do with the almighty dollar.

Amazing post, KenK.

Personally, I love Will Smith.
He's in my Top 10.
