"Two-time Academy Award nominee Will Smith is the most powerful actor on the planet, according to an annual list by America's Newsweek magazine. The Independence Day hunk has eclipsed last year's winner Tom Cruise and previous regular winner Tom Hanks. Newsweek spoke to a host of studio chiefs and film producers anonymously for fear of offending other stars. Smith was chosen because of his huge box office success and his ability to tackle any genre - sci-fi I, Robot, action comedy Men In Black or drama The Pursuit Of Happyness. Following behind was Johnny Depp at two, Ben Stiller at three, Brad Pitt at four and Cruise at five."
Wow, Will Smith plays Will Smith in every movie and he gets a title like this? Yet another reason why Hollywood is laughable. Yet more evidence why money is the big factor in what defines an "actor" in Hellywood.
Granted I haven't seen Pursuit of Happyness, but one good dramatic role hardly makes you better than everyone else on the planet. I, Robot was plain bad, and he was yet another version of the Will Smith Persona in that movie. Men in Black was ok, but more mediocre than good. And anyone could have done that role, IMO. Interesting how Tommy Lee Jones gets no recognition for this movie, despite playing a more complicated (and better acted) character.
I am not denying he's an ok actor, but he is FIRST and FOREMOST a star. There are plenty of better actors out there making better movies, but since they don't make the green, they don't make the lame magazine covers with "GREATEST ACTOR EVER" emblazoned on it.
Of course that same lame list has Ben Stiller on it.
