Kevin Smith will "Hit Somebody"

Following recent comments made during Kevin’s Canadian tour with “Red State” this week, he’s mentioned that it’s possible that his final film, “Hit Somebody”, may need to arrive as two separate films, a Part 1 and Part 2, “Kill Bill” style. The Hour confirmed the comments made during the Montreal stop with this story:

Kevin Smiths Hit Somebody to be a two-parter

During the Q&A portion of tonightís Montreal stop of the Red Provinces Tour, Kevin Smithës Canadian series of screenings of his flick Red State, he dropped a juicy tidbit of information:

Hit Somebody, his next and final film, will be a two-parter. The filmmaker revealed that while writing his screenplay, which is based on the Mitch Albom-penned Warren Zevon song about Buddy, a Canadian kid who dreams of becoming a hockey player even though heís ìnot that good with a puck,î he realized that it was getting way too big to fit into one movie. He thought of turning it into a HBO series, but finally settled on doing a two-part film, ‡ la Kill Bill.

From what he said, it seems like the split will happen when Buddy finally makes it into the NHL a professional ice hockey league; the first part will mostly be about his youth in Canada.

From what we’re hearing, this makes a lot of sense. Kevin continues to write the script as inspired, and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s turning into quite a sprawling tale. Recent comments made during SIR indicated that the adult male lead, played by Nicholaus Braun, wouldn’t arrive until almost the halfway point of the film. This wouldn’t leave a ton of time to tell what likely is a lot more story before the final credits roll. With Kevin’s proven track record of success with “Red State”, and this new distribution model, this is totally possible. Without prints to worry about, and the ability to take the film digitally and tour the world with it, this sounds absolutely perfect. Give us the first half and then tour again with the second, or even do some super shows where fans can see it all with an intermission. We love the idea, and as a last film, it’s a way to go out with a bang. Fitting Buddy’s story into a standard 2 hour or less running time would be tough. We’re hoping that this comes true, and think chances are very good that this will be what we’ll see.

“Hit Somebody” is planned for a 2012 start. No release details so far, though The SIRmon will be your place to go for all the news about this exciting project.

****ing awesome, hockey needs anOther dank film(s). I can only watche slap shot, miracle, and mystery Alaska so many times...

Has anyone heard Kevin mention in the podcasts how badly he wants Alan Rickman to be the narrator? He hasn't asked him yet but instead of writing "Narrator" in the script he just wrote "Rickman".

I'm stoked about this film. It sounds awesome. If it's his last then damn hope it's awesome and he goes out on top.

Kevin Smith can't retire any sooner for me. Juvenile, immature dialogue with zero depth and with nothing new to bring to the table. All style, no substance, just like Quentin Tarantino. I hope QT is next.

Duly noted... anyway, I like the sound of this film, it sounds like its quite epic in scope, considering it has such a simple premise.

You know what you can do? Just not watch their movies. Then it's like they retired just for you!

I thought I'd signed in to moviepoopshoot.com for a second.

It's pretty clear you haven't given a serious look at either one. Smith's films in particular have great emotional depth and a pretty broad range of themes if you can be bothered to look past the dick and fart jokes.

The fact that you can, concerns me. :oldrazz:

He can't go out any worse than Cop Out.

I think Smith gets/gives himself too much $#!t for Cop Out, it was a decent action movie. It was clearly out of his comfort range and an experiment that didn't work, but there are far worse movies released all the time.

The fact that you can't concerns me. Each film very clearly has a message behind them, they're not even concealed well at all. He makes movies about subjects he's passionate about and does them on the cheap too, so they aren't bloated summer blockbusters that need a $100 million opening to be considered a success.

I do remember him mentioning that. Would be fantastic if it happens

This man has proven with redstate he is an amazing writer and director. His talents will be missed on the silver screen. Copout wasn't his fault it was bruce willis who ruined that film. Refusing to do what was asked of him. Hit somebody I'm sure will be an epic tale I hope willbe a swan song to a very talented man.

Kevin you will be missed.

I'm probably too hard on it too but I just thought it was awful. 2 hours of Tracy Morgan yelling does not a movie make.

Been hearing great things about Red State. I doubt he'll be gone for good.

He has said repeatedly he is done with the silver screen. I hope he does continue to make films. I think he is fine director and writer.

He once said we'd seen the last of Jay and Silent Bob as well but then Clerks 2 came along and there they were. Maybe he is serious, but people change their minds all the time.

I hope he changes his mind about giving up films . He should still qright screen plays at least , and Cop Out may have been his weakest film , but the films real fault was the script , which is the only way he didn't write . I thiought he did pretty good with the action pieces .

Cop Out was fun and hilarious. I don't know what people were expecting. Oh well, I enjoyed it.

Kevin Smith took to Twitter Friday morning to update his fans on his next and final film, Hit Somebody. Smith recently announced that the hockey film would be released in two parts, ala Kill Bill, and as of today the first script is done and he’s moved on to part two. He’ll call part one Hit Somebody: Home and the second part Hit Somebody: Away referring to the fact that the first film will see the main character Buddy, played by Nicholas Braun, growing up and the second will see him playing pro hockey. Smith’s also aiming for the first part to be rated PG-13 and the second part R. Yes, another PG-13 Kevin Smith movie. There’s more after the jump.
