Winter Storms Plague Texas

Is anyone surprised Ted Cruz would abandon his state and country in it's time of need?
Remember when he kept saying **** like his 2016 campaign was blessed by God to pander to Evangelicals and said he was fighting for the working men and women of this country... Yeah they didn't believe him then either.

Does Cruz have any jurisdictional responsibilities that he abandoned, or is this just a matter of optics?

Remember the time when Cruz accidentally liked a porno on his twitter account, and he ended up saying a staff member who just happen to be using his personal social media account liked the tweet, not him? Him throwing his daughters under the bus with that statement kind of reminded me of that.

I'd say he is totally right, it is an infuriating week for Texans.

This sounds like you are making a choice to pretend as though Cruz DOESN'T have a laundry list of actions and rhetoric to refer to when judging him as a hypocrite and feckless lying weasel.

Cruz being in the party of No for so long he has responsibility for the piss poor infrastructure in his state as an elected official. The power issues did not happen over night.

Cruz and the GOP dug their own graves in terms of public opinion.

I am baffled by those that reflexively make weak tea defenses of these Conservative Republicans that in no way have earned the benefit of the doubt.

I'd bet money this won't change their minds on that that front, but it should give all of us two words to think about: backup generator.
Yes...

Because the GOP has spent years bending over backwards to kow tow to big businesses, cutting social services and not investing as much as should be into public works like the power grid EVERY Citizen of the state should have already invested money in individual power generators.

Why have an expensive power grid at all? You've solved it. What were those people in line for miles at food banks months ago thinking trying to feed themselves? They should have spent less on food and they all should have bought generators with the money they don't have because of a giant economic down turn caused by a GOP that has no idea how to do basic governance in the 21st Century.

When it comes to the basics of modern civilization like... Electricity, an entire state needs to pull itself up by its own bootstraps.

I'm not even sure what any of this means. I was just checking if there was more to this than bad optics, like did Cruz abandon an actually responsibility.

I live in California, as blue as a state as you can get, and we have had many many insane periods of rolling blackouts due to *forseen* circumstances, stuff we should be able to predict, like heatwaves in the summer. Or at least we should be able to predict it much better than an unforseen, once in a lifetime polar vortex descending upon Texas.

But during that, I've never blamed the state or the government. All I'm saying is sheet happens. If you can, get a generator and be prepared.

I think Texas was doing the equivalent of driving around without insurance. They've been betting they wouldn't get a freeze like this and lost. The governing political party looks at only short term costs and that "big federal government" they so distrust is right now bailing them out without requiring political favors ( I support this BTW). Frankly, if FEMA is expected to bail out states confronting this type of emergency, the states should have to meet minimum requirements; in this case, planning on and implementing reasonable reliability standards. Certain states are all about states rights when it comes to what they should be doing until their policies exacerbate the effects of a disaster and then they want a hand out. You are a member of the US and the government that is expected to bail you out has every right in the world to hold you to a standard in order to receive emergency funds.

Let me give you an example from the Loma Prieta earthquake that leveled much of Santa Cruz.

In the years before the earthquake, the City Council, in conjunction with seismologists, found that many of the buildings in downtown Santa Cruz needed to be retrofitted in order to make them safe if a major earthquake were to hit. The leader of the downtown merchants was up in arms about this. He said that government shouldn't get involved in private enterprise and tell people how they should run their businesses. After the earthquake, the downtown area was devastated. People were killed by falling walls, injured and displaced from their homes. That same hypocritical PoS was in the news the next day saying "you can't expect the private sector to absorb these kinds of losses".

If you want to run your business in an irresponsible way, don't expect me and others like me to bail you out when you lose the lottery.

Fyou.

My elected officials privatized and deregulated our energy so a few rich people could make a profit. They are ABSOLUTELY to blame for this. Had we been on the national grid, there would’ve been higher regulatory standards that could have prevented this disaster

Joining in on the current talking point of Ben Shapiro, Mike Cernovich, and Dinesh D'souza is a good look.

If senators can literally do nothing of value back in their home states, why the **** do they take off one week a month from the congressional duties?

You could be right. People are at liberty to blame whoever they'd like, the government, lying politicians, rich people, etc. All these individuals and institutions can and will fail us. Be prepared.

I don't think anyone is laying blame solely or directly on Ted Cruz for the power outage, or expecting him to be able to flip a switch and fix it, or even be one of the people most directly involved in fixing it.

It's just terrible tone deaf and frankly extremely ill-considered optics. It makes him look callous and frankly stupid, not that either of those should be new revelations to anyone.

God I hate being cynical, but if anyone tries to take advantage of this situation by making fake calls to people who need help, I hope they rot in jail and then hell.....preferably the former.

Politicians seem to think their job is to just attack other politicians instead of actually looking out for their constituents.
Yup, way too much of this going on. :(
