Van damme for gambit is weird. And its especially weird to include gambit since he wasn't created until the 90s. If we're sticking to the idea of this being in 1988.

Even in 1988, I'd still see Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Kelsey Grammer as Beast but for the rest:

The ONLY reason to make an X-Men movie in 1988 is so you can cast Fred Ward as Wolverine.

Fred Ward as Wolverine would have been awesome.

Lot of people mention young Michael Biehn when it comes to Cyclops and I totally get it. But to me 80's Aidan Quinn is the ideal Scott Summers.

Great casting! Nothing against Michael Biehn, but Quinn would bring a lot more depth to Scott.

jon erik hexum would be a good Colosus if Arnold Schwarzenegger was unavailable.

Also: Vanessa Williams or Iman for Storm. Fred Ward is a good choice for Wolvy but I'd also take Mel Gibson in his prime just screamed Logan and Sandra Bullock for Rogue.

I think also that a good Cyclops would be Richard Gere. Coincidentally I also think Julia Roberts would have been good for Jean Grey or Gillian Anderson.

Speaking of Storm. Many have wondered if her headdress could work irl. Based on this Iman/Storm manip I'd say so.
