Xbox Live Grrrr Help Please

Ok so I got like 3 different people telling me how to connect to Xbox live. I have broadband in my room along with the modem. Now connected the modem wire to the back of the 360 like I was told.

I'm now in the xbox live section. I have clicked on join xbox live.
Checking network status came up now I'm being told do upgrade I click yes, upgrade now. UPDATE IN PROGRESS.


UPDATE FAILED
can't download upgrade please test your connection in system network settings.


Now in system section going into network settings. Testing xbox live connection now.

IP ADDRESS CONFIRMED
DNS CONFIRMED
MTU CONFIRMED
ICMP CONFIRMED

The when it check xbox live I'm asked to upgrade in which i click yes upgrade. I'm now getting check your system section in network settings

help me connect please.
