Despite quite a few rumors and leaks, many were still surprised about the reveal of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Not only does it bring the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom together with the former raving Rayman adversaries, but it’s wrapped in a visually striking strategy RPG package.

Fans and journalists noticed quite a few similarities between this new title and the classic SRPG series XCOM, but Venture Beat managed to get a comment from an XCOM developer at Firaxis, Jake Solomon. Not only was he surprised to see elements of the series he himself helps shape, he also wants to introduce it to his children.


There are few times in my career that I’ve been as surprised as when I was watching that presentation. Just like everyone else, my jaw dropped a little bit when I heard the phrase, ‘As you see, Luigi has taken half-cover.’ What world am I in right now? I couldn’t believe it. But I realized that this is finally how I can introduce XCOM to my daughters. I can finally play something like XCOM with my daughters, introduce the basic concepts. Then, when they’re old enough, maybe we can move on to XCOM together. That was really cool to see.

At E3 2017, we learned that XCOM 2 is getting an expansion called War of the Chosen. Unlike the previous DLCs for XCOM 2 that added bits and pieces to the game, War of the Chosen adds much beefier story and gameplay features that seem to expand the story as a whole. Today, Firaxis released a video giving a deeper look at the additional factions players can add to their cause.


In this video, we learn that these factions: the Reapers and the Skirmishers, do not get along, disagreeing on the approach to the alien menace. If players play their cards right, however, they can get these fair-weather friends to get along long enough to help you take back Earth.

The video also features one of the new hero units for the aliens: The Assassin. She's part of an elite group called The Chosen. New enemies called the Lost are also featured. While the aliens fight XCOM and the other factions, they also repel the Lost, mindless zombie-like creatures that are remnants of the alien's initial takeover of Earth. This scourge is a swarming enemy that will most likely end in evacuation rather than clearing the area. Fighting the Lost offers a different kind of "last stand"-type gameplay.Our review of XCOM 2 when it was released last year paints the game as a shining example of Tactical RPGs. We also talk about our favorite features of XCOM 2 in this video.

2K Games and Firaxis Games have announced the XCOM 2 Collection for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will launch at retailers in the United States on August 14 for $59.99.


The XCOM 2 Collection includes the following:





    • XCOM 2 – Aliens rule Earth, promising a brilliant future for mankind while secretly hiding a sinister agenda. As the leader of a guerrilla force facing impossible odds, you must ignite a global resistance to eliminate the alien threat and save the human race from extinction.
      • XCOM 2: Resistance Warrior Pack – Customize your squad of resistance fighters with a set of bonus outfits and head gear, as well as custom armor and face camo. Instantly unlock a survivor of the old war as a new recruit in your barracks.

Today Firaxis Games, makers of the rebooted XCOM series, announced XCOM 2: War of the Chosen— Tactical Legacy Pack. The downloadable content, described as a “gift to the fans,” creates a bridge between 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown and 2012’s XCOM 2 as reimagined in 2017’s excellent War of the Chosen expansion. The new DLC will be free to all PC owners of XCOM 2: War of the Chosenuntil Dec. 3.

Today’s announcement is accompanied by a video preview featuring XCOM creative director Jake Solomon.

“The team and I looked back at the entire series,” Solomon said, including the original games by Julian Gollop, “to find inspiration in creating new game modes, stories, maps, and equipment to remaster for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.”
