One of my roommates is trying to convince me to sign up for a yoga class with them…..has anybody here ever done one, and if so, what did you think of it? Do you think it’s worth the $25 per class to join? Does it hurt? Some of those positions look pretty complicated! Any input would be appreciated :)

Save the $25 and go to Burger King.

Yeah, and have it your way.

$25 per class is pretty steep. I'd say buy one of those $9 DVD's and try it out first to see if you like. I do yoga and I love it, but I got into it buy buying one of those DVD's first. A lot cheaper plus you can use it multiple times.

Can you get fries with that? :o

At twenty-five dollars a lesson you might as well cut the supernatural bull and pay for a chiropractor.

I was walking by a flea market, looking for old vinyls and cds and found a stand with some yoga books, I bought 3 books for 5 dollars

money very well spent

I prefer to watch women perform yoga than go for it myself. Downward facing dog indeed. :o

Honestly, I heard it's worth the cash as far as the classes though.

care to explain?

Oh I’m sure that some of the stretches can relieve back pain but most of it’s just the placebo affect. Same thing works for faith healers and the use of sugar pills in pharmaceutical research. I don’t care how many times you stretch your ankle behind your ear, you’re not going to find inner peace because of it, the most you’ll probably get that’s real is increased flexibility. But that can be accomplished with non-yoga methods. Like I said, use your cash to go to the chiropractor.

it goes way beyond just "stretching" and "relieving back pain"

but then again, you are right, inner peace is not acquired through stretching your left foot's pinky over your right earlobe, it's acquired through meditation, putting your mind in complete silence and many other things, the positions are just part of the "ritual", if you want to call it something

This place you're looking at doesn't offer a free introductory class? That blows. I have a couple of DVD's, the first is pretty intense and you can work up a bit of sweat doing it. I love the music and the scenery, it's Ali MacGraw - Yoga Mind & Body.

I guess give the class a try, but I prefer to do my Yoga at home.

Well if the instructor looks something like that then it may be worth it... but it really isn't needed unless you just want to get more flexible... the positions are obviously not comfortable.

I'm pretty sure you won't get support from people here about yoga. I mean this is an online forum where people are sitting on their asses typing away. lol Seriously though, I've never tried yoga but would like to. I hear it is quite a workout.

is better than most (who most likely have not even tried it) think

I've never done it myself, but my girlfriend used to go every day (back before we got together, she just does it at home twice a week now). It not only helps you relieve stress ("gain inner peace"), it's also quite a workout and keeps you in incredible shape if you are doing some of the more advanced classes. It's really too bad that she feels like she can't go to classes anymore, she really enjoyed it.

I recently started doing yoga and I love it. It works the body in ways that few exercise methods do. When I'm done, I feel great. However, I won't sugar coat it: it does hurt somewhat. I've been working out 3-5 times per week and stretching daily for 22 years and I wish I had tried it sooner.
However $25 per class seems excessive.

Yoga is excellent for attuning the body and the mind. And, the stretching helps to keep you limber and less prone to injury, increases bloodflow throughout the body, and can help ease tension and knots out of muscles. It has some pain relief functions associated with it (over time) but that's not the primary focus. Anyone dissing it obviously hasn't ever done it.
