Suh-Weet! I get to read comic books for school

Last year my english class was assigned Watchmen instead of The Iliad.:word:

Wow, i read The Odyssey.

Why in the hell is my school not this cool?

I am one jelous bastard right now of all of you.

Well, To Kill A Mockingbird was good. :csad:

And then I read Animal Farm... that's something I don't want to read again. The only good book was All Quiet.

ok where in the heck were these classes when i was registering?

I never got to read a comic book for school. But I did get very excited when I had to read The Picture of Dorian Gray for one class. :o

Well I suppose if you're paying for it then the school should have whatever classes that interest you but this course sounds like a complete waste of time and money to me. Was is there to be gained from it?

Best.Class.Evah!!!

See if they did stuff like this when I was at school, teach us via things that are actually interesting and relevant to our culture then I wouldn't of been such a ball breaker for the teachers.

The school system would find that if they did things that interested students then there would be less rebels and ****ers who don't wanna know.

Make learning interesting and fun, not a chore. Write that down [/Van Wilder]

Well here's the reason why i look at this as a win. First, I go to a community where I get financial aid to pay for my classes assuming I am full-time, which I am, so money is not an issue. Second, I'm in a honors program which requires me to take four "seminar" classes that are only available to those in the program. I already took 1, now I need three more and this classes helps me knock one more off. Third, the class is not just about reading and taking about comic books. In fact, that's the only real downside I've seen so far is that the class tends to be too lecture oriented and gets a bit boring. But even with that, it's still interesting because the professor talks about not only the characters and the stories, but also the history that surrounds them and what was happening in the world during those time periods.

Basically, this class isn't just about reading comic books, its also about analyzing them and viewing them as being similar to traditional novels and books. So really, this class is set to be very helpful and there is much to gain and learn.

I wrote one of my final English thesis's (because I got to write TWO :() on Watchmen. Which would have been awesome except I'm pretty sure my prof didn't even know what a graphic novel is. I think I only got an A because she had no clue what was going on so just gave me a good grade to get by.

Now I'm in law school. I suppose I could specialize in IP/Corporate law and try to get in house at WB/DC comics in my dreams.

Sounds like an interesting class to take, especially if you are planning on going into the business of comics. Though I would figure that a college, even a community college, would be pushing classes on kids that...I don't know...focused more on things in life that may be able to better contribute to society.

Yeah it's always awesome to have a class where you know that an A is guaranteed. I got to do a class once called "Monstrous Speculation". We basically got to read Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, and Anne Rice as well as watching all the film adaptations. Tis was heaven.

Well I mean it's not like we're all just reading comic books and geeking out about things. In fact, we were talking about how marvel started with the Fantastic Four and hardly anyone knew anything about them aside from the movies. Like I said before, this is almost like a English Lit/History class mixed together, only the source of material we got through is mostly from comic books. We're also reading essays and books written about the subject, which will help us reach the goal of determining whether comic books should get more respect as being a real piece of literature as opposed to just being something kids read for fun. Honestly, aside from the fact that we're reading comics, I don't see much of a difference between this class and a typical english analysis class or history class, or pretty much any class for that matter.

Man, that sounds like a great class. I'm already good at English, mix in comic books & I'm set for straight A's. :D

Gonna go back to school, gonna read me some comic books reals good.

Woah man, my professor gave us some handout to read. It's a chapter in some book and the chapter is called "The Myth of Superman" and idk but the writing is just insane to understand. It's like that scene with the architect in the Matrix Reloaded only 100x worse. I'm not even halfway done and it's giving me a headache. :csad:

Lol, well it is supposed to be an honors class after all so it can't be all fun and games.

I'm curious though. Our final paper is supposed to be a research paper on any topic that we choose as long as it is approved by the professor. In class yesterday we were talking about why Superman, or any hero for that matter chooses to have a secret identity or alter-ego. I don't know, maybe I'm worrying about it to much for now, but I'm already thinking about writing my paper on that topic. Like I was also thinking about discussing how you have heroes like Batman where the costume/alter-ego is really the true character, thus leading of the question of who is really the disguise? I'm really hoping I can do that for my paper because it's really interesting when you think about it in terms of most superheroes.

Nice. Last year in the bookstore, an English class had "From Hell" as one of their texts. Wish I could have taken that class.

Wow, I completely forgot about this thread. Turns out it was a really fun class. We got to read The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and Marvels. We didn't get any homework at all aside from reading the books, and our final grade was basically based on whether or not we did the final paper. I did mine on the Dichotomy of Superheroes and their secret identities. I used Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man as my main examples of the different types of relationships between the hero and the real personality. I ended up getting an A in the class. :awesome:
