You Must Order Your Philly Cheesesteak In "english"

I speak the "International Language of the Dance". I use interpretative dance to order food all the time.

Order in English or "Get the FLOCK out!"
That is what my sign would say

I never said I ate any of the lardy foods mentioned

I just think these utterly hedonistic combinations of food are verging on the grotesque.

Deep fried mars bars included...blech
so why specify "only in America"?

guys, c'mon now, let's be honest.
the sign is not about ordering in english at all.
simply because if a guy came over to the place and simply said "cheesesteak?" I have feeling good 'ole geno should be able to get the general idea.
what the sign really means is "don't speak no other language in here no more!" (which I have feeling really means "don't speak any spanish") and frankly, I'm more outraged at the existance of stromfront.org that I could ever be at some new york-italian stereotype.
however I do find it weird that soooo many people are in agreement with him.
and him being italian which is weird because the italians where so insular that they made a "little italy" in almost every city in the US. not exactly poster boys for assimilation. but, hey, whatever.

We have ice cream trucks, don't think I've seen a shop just for ice cream though, no.

Sorry if it offended you, if was just a flippent remark, not to be taken to heart, hence why I included rolly eyes thingy

My specification was merely an afterthought, I suppose I did not take into consideration the greese filled oozing with lard culinary tastes of other places.

You have to admit though, cheesesteak sounds gross

Yeah, probably, since we don't have restaurant chains which serve them. I imagine we would if people over here wanted them.

I used to hate cheesesteaks because of the way that they looked, and I live in the South Jersey area near Philly, so I felt like an outsider.

Then I tried one in a moment of weakness, and it was awesome.

Really, really awesome.

I can not believe that people are actually ARGUING for ignorance.

Cool. Stay in your little enclaves, pretending that you can get by without learning to speak the predominant language in your own town!

You can't.

And people wonder why uneducated immigrants only get the crap jobs like flipping burgers and picking apples.

Has no one heard of the concepts?....."improving yourself"?......."self preservation"?

The gist I get here is, "It's hard for Mexicans to learn new things, so we should coddle them."

That's just, the "over-all" impression I get from these Language threads.
"Hey, It's hard!...So We should print all traffic signs in Swahili, Sanskrit, Spanish, French, Cockney, Southern American Dialect, Proper "English", Russian", etc."

"Otherwise, we're racists."

God, grow a pair.:down
I did.

ha! this is awesome except it's completely wrong.
I loved your little Gyro story, it was cute and it gave such insight into your life I nearly had a stroke imaging how much balls it took to say Gyro.
If I was a woman my orgasm would've filled a small bucket.

see, i don't think that anyone is asking Geno to learn spanish right? I think the debate is what HE is implying, not what some comic book geeks halfway round the world think.

see?

I don't remember anyone saying that Geno should know every language in the world in order to have a business, see I missed that part.
but I like how you zeroed in on Mexicans, because this is what it's about, that's why this sign made the news, that's why it's being discussed.
because in the end it's all about getting back at them illegals, don't fool yourself about this being about ANYTHING else, because it's not.

but of course, some guy that can barely speak english as it is doing his part to show how little he thinks of immigrants that can't automatically learn the "native language" is surely awesome.
I mean, the little incovenience that he has to go through sorting out "cheese steak" from all the spanish dribble, that there is hardship.
he doesn't have to "grow a pair" ironically enough.

oh and the gist is not
"It's hard for Mexicans to learn new things, so we should coddle them."

the gist is "there's no need to antagonize anyone" and has nothing to do with "coddling" them. :down

Selective reading and non-point making.
First of all, I know it's about Mexicans, in fact, I said so.
and that's one of the things I think is gross, because when it's an "ugly American" in France, and they have the same rule, everyone rushes to the defense of the French and says that we need to respect their culture since we're guests in their country.

To me it seems to be racist, implying that, well, you're an American, so YOU should know better than to order "snails", you should say "escargot". But don't expect the feeble MEXICAN to be able to wrap his head around the predominant language.

You can read any book of business ettiquette, if you're over seas, it's either considered oafish if you don't learn at least the basics of the language, or sometimes flat out rude, so why are you quick to say that Geno's sign in antagonizing, but won't acknowledge that the same may be said of people who won't even put forth the effort to communicate with Geno.
It obviously has antagonized him, 'cause he got fed up enough to make the sign, right?

But again, expect nothing of the immigrant, you're the one who has to bend over. That's why I know how to count to ten in Spanish and I know Spanish people who don't know how to count to ten in English...because American Sesame Street teaches a ton of Spanish, but I've watched Mexican Sesame Street, and I didn't see any "One Two Three Four Five Six..." ever.

more to follow but on phone

perhaps my reading comprehension is off. but it seems it is about Mexicans.
at least in this post I was quoting.

I for one don't know If people think it's an "ugly american" thing, but I believe that if you travel for leisure to france it's quite a different story than say having to leave your country out of hunger and poverty. again, I think the point ole' Geno was making, was about immigrants not those that travel because they have disposable income. and again, I think even Geno meant "don't speak spanish" more than anything else, due to the current climate in the US.

ironically the fact that these people don't know "business etiquette" is part of why they can't make a decent living in Mexico. they don't go because there's more oportunity for advancement, but because they can work their ass off in a stupid job for more money

and once again, your take on immigrants and the world is skewed at best.
sesame street in the US teaches numbers in spanish yes, but that has been in the last ten years and that has been the program's choice, I don't think they're being forced.
might as well point to "Dora the explorer" as the root of all evil.
I fail to see how counting to ten is "bending over" perhaps you can tell me.
i gather you're at a higher post and get paid more than these people, one would think excellence would be expected of you. and again, these people can barely count and or read in spanish.

however, in the end I fail to see how the following:

I don't remember anyone saying that Geno should know every language in the world in order to have a business, see I missed that part.
but I like how you zeroed in on Mexicans, because this is what it's about, that's why this sign made the news, that's why it's being discussed.

was not applicable or a "non-point"

Just to point something out...

The guy's name is Joe, not Geno. :o

Carry on with yer discussion n'stuff.

I always hate the "Only in America:rolleyes:" phrase, but that was one of the more stupid times I've seen it used.
Have you ever....seen, authentic, Italian cooking? or Mexican?
America is not by any stretch the "only" place that serves up lardwiches.

There's this French sauce, can't remember the name, where it requires 8 sticks of butter to make it.
yes they do....

Italian are not exactly sandwiches and in Mexico we don't eat sandwiches

so you would end up with Lard Tacos and uhm.... Lard Pizza?

Not that it's relevant, but try "30 years".

The people who's ignorance and laziness regularly makes my life harder can speak, read and write Spanish just fine. They've been cleaning here for 5 years, and still I'm the one who's expected to try and understand and speak Spanish. They won't even say "Thank You". They say "Gracias", and they have no idea of how to say "one" or "two" or "three". They're grown women who've lived here for at least 5 years and they have to call their bi-lingual boss to be a go-between for the simplest of questions or statements.
I am the only one that steps up with some meager knowledge of Spanish. They do not at all. Sorry, that's inexcusable.
I'm trying to imagine myself moving to Mexico, living there for 5 years, and not being able to speak word one of Spanish.
Don't you think that'd be obnoxious of me??

Can YOU read English?
I said very clearly that I agree. You accused Geno's of antagonism via the sign, and I pointed out that the stubborn willful ignorance/laziness of many immigrants also antagonizes the natives, or else WHY WOULD HE'VE MADE THE SIGN?
It was because he got fed up with their arrogance, expecting him to learn their language, but not meeting him half-way.

Why do you keep saying "Don't fool yourself, that's what it's about." as if you've made some victory, when I already said, "Yep, that's what it's about."

Man ..you are making too much sense.........stop it before it becomes contagious.

This topic was so totally last night.
I thought this would have ended after the extreme pwnage of Slipknot

Dude, I had to pull back and start returning to frivolity because I like Slipknot but he was so losing.

I thought.

Seattle is literally teeming with cool bosnians, Japanese and Ethiopean immigrants, I mean, seriously, to the point that I've often wondered, "If they're coming to America, why do so many of them choose Seattle?"
For instance, my right hand man from Jabuti, he constantly complained about the overcast, foggy and rainy Seattle weather, and told me that one of the big reasons he had to leave was that he missed the hot, arid sunshine.

But, I know so many immigrants...because of the nature of my job, and I have never ONCE (I realize that this is just my experience and that you can't generalize when you're only one person), but never ONCE, have I met a Bosnian or an Ethiopean who didn't either a) have a stunning mastery of the English language, or b) always ask about English phrases, slang and syntax, to try and expedite self-expression.

On quite the other hand, I've only met TWO Mexicans, in my 5 years here, who were obviously new to the language but had an eagerness to learn about English.
All of the others just talk to themselves and look embarrassed when they want to tell me something, but I can't understand them, and yes, it makes me feel sorry for them, and I'm not a complete ass****. In real life, I struggle to try to find some common ground, but it often, SERIOUSLY often ends up with the both of us using pantomime, little hand motions, to try and express ourselves to one another.

And the idea that, "Well, the Bosnians and Ethiopeans you meet were the "elite" in their own country." just PISSES ME OFF TO NO END!

It's simply untrue.

You're a jackass. The only thing you may... and I say may have gotten me on is these googled "free" language schools that I have never heard anything about. You can pat yourself on the back for that ingenius find. Did I pat myself on the back and say I "owned" you when I responded to your "People have been coming here for hundreds of years as immigrants, and they all learned english. Italians, Germans, French, etc. But you don't see subway signs written in German or Italian, do you" message? You don't know history and that was quit evident in your post(s). I am not going to get into a heated argument yet again... I would rather enjoy my night by maybe watching *****y Ann Coulter (yes, Willhelm... I called your woman a *****) and George Carlin on Jay Leno in a few minutes.
