Your Thoughts on Ending being Possibly Changed (The Squid)

What are your thoughts towards The Squid possibly not being on film?

  • NO! Squid must be in movie just like the GN!

  • Okay, as long as they keep the same overall concept of the squid.

  • Screw the SQUID! Change the ending all together!

  • Change ending to make it possible for a sequel...possibly Watchmen Babies: V for Vactaion!

Manhattan just doesn't feel like as big of a threat to humanity as a whole

I disagree on that point. In fact, that's really my only problem with that idea of an ending. The squid was an unknown, but the thing showed up dead, so they knew it could be killed. The world could unite for the purpose of finding a way to stop this from happening again. Manhattan, on the other hand, is a God. The world knows just how powerful he is, and I cant even imagine how they would plan to stop him.

The thing that gets to me is that say you stop Manhattan or he goes into exile. He's gone, the threat is nuetralized (more so in him just being killed). Knowing Manhattan, he'd never show himself on earth again because he knows and feels he doesn't belong there anymore and wants to start anew somewhere else. The idea of the quid as an alien of some sort means the threat of an attack at any given time, making people constantly fear it from happening, thus postponing their problems and nuclear wars or whatever longer than the threat of Manhattan in my mind. I just see it as a worse plan, one that postpones the inevitable for a shorter amount of time than the squid or idea of some foreign alien menace would, and cheapens the characterization of Manhattan coming to terms with himself in the book. I can't really explain it much clearer, but like I said it feels like a cop out and takes away from the overall plot conclusion.

Well from the footage shown in the Scream trailer, there is no squid. Looks like a nuclear blast happened in New York.

I completely expected them to change from the squid to something else. What I don't like is how they are changing the meaning of the ending. You can still alter the threat without the purpose of the story being changed.

It's part of Dan's dream sequence in the GN...

Chapter VII: pg. 16 - panels 13-16

I think it's damn awesome that they kept that in the movie

I hated Dawn of the Dead and 300 so Snyder has proven me right that he is a hack.

I speak for alot of people in saying "and your posting here because...?"

I always took the squid as a means to show Veidts intelligence and insanity in equal measure - only he could think of this, only he could pull this off - but framing some other guy just doesnt have the same gravitas whether the original 'check mate' concept is intact or not - It takes away from the characters credibility in every sense. Still cant wait to see it, although this has put a bit of a downer on it - for me anyways.
Its a gonna be a bit like watching Ghostbusters without the Stay Puft.

Exactly.

I don't know how Snyder could let go that very important aspect from the book.

Bull. Veidt's intelligence and "insanity" still comes into play here.

I didnt say it doesnt come into play I said it doesnt have the same gravitas - It doesnt!

No I'm not referring to that. Laurie and Doc M are standing in rubble. It doesn't look like any of the damage from the last chapter. It doesn't look like a giant squid caused the damage but some sort of bomb, the new energy machine that is referred to.

How so?

The only thing you can say about this plan compared to the squid is that it doesn't have as many "layers" to the actual plan (kidnapped scientists, writers, artists, etc, the psychic elements). But it has layers of meaning to it that the original plan didn't have, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. They're both pretty cool.

Considering there was an image of an actual nuclear blast in the trailer, it would've helped if you more specific in your first post :o

Concerning what you're actually talking about, I need to see more of that particular scene to get an idea of what they did with it (I doubt it was nuclear, personally). I wouldn't rule out the "energy machine", though.

Its a SQUID. Use nukes for gods sake. If not...that better one scary as squid.

As long as it has the same concept. Anyway, it would be strange if they changed the ending. Just about everything looks panel for shot, so why would they change the ending? So they could set up a sequel(but nobody would like that)?

Well, we might get the squid ending afterall:

Multiple WATCHMEN endings filmed?

Fans who saw a recent screening of 'Watchmen' in Portland have shredded their non-disclosure agreements with Warner Bros. and posted details of the ending of the movie online, an ending which differs from the finale in the graphic novel.
Well, Rich Johnston over at Comic Book Resources says 'Watchmen' purists needn't freak out just yet. He reports that several endings have been filmed, possibly to head off a situations just like this one. His report also reveals a SPOILER if you haven't read the graphic novel yet (and if you haven't...what's wrong with you? Go do this now. We'll wait.)
Johnston writes, "...the movie’s FX farm has already created big squid effects. And that there will be more than one ending of the film tested before general release. Expect to see all of them in the two/three disc DVD."

Exactly what I'm expecting. they said that Watchmen is un-filmable, Snyder wanted to prove them wrong and do the best job he could. Taking out the squid just doesn't make sense since he's sticking so close to the GN now. Just doesn't add up.

Squid is in. You can quote me on that and save it until 3-6-09

I have felt the same way after reading about the changed ending...just didn't add up with things Synder has said in the past.
Hopefully the squid stays in. I really want to see the GN page realized on screen of that massive beast lying shoved into buildings.
