Your Top 10 Movies you'd recommend

'Stander' is a really good crime movie that no-one ever talks about, Tom Jane plays a South African cop who gets disilluisoned by the system, and turns his hand to bank robbing, becoming something of a Robin Hood type figure in the process. It's based on a true story. He is way better in this role than as the Punisher. I lent my dvd of this out and never got it back, forgot all about it.

Recommending movies has often proved pointless but here's 10 I think people should see.

1. Pulp Fiction
2. City of God
3. No Country For Old Men
4. Once Upon a Time in the West
5. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
6. Heat
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. LOTR Trilogy
9. Jurassic Park
10. High Noon

And then 1000 others...

^ I think most people have seen half of those movies.

Any particular mood you're in right now, like a specific genre or style you have an interest in?

Adding to my previous list:
Reality Bites
Little Miss Sunshine
Falling Down

I you are looking for a couple of good Christmas movies for the next holiday season I would recommend both of these movies:

One Magic Christmas
Nothing like the Holidays

Ok sorry, I guess I didn't get the point of this thread. But my non movie loving friends haven't seen most of those movies, despite me having told them to do so forever.

I was going to recommend Before Sunrise but then I scanned the thread again -- and it's in your Top 10 films. Great film -- one that deserves a Criterion release.

Before Sunset is good, but it's not as memorable or lyrical like the first one.

I know a lot of people have a problem with this one, but I see a lot of genius in it.

5. The Secret of NIMH

Regardless of changes from source material.

6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Couldn't leave those last three out.

I can't recommend 10, but check out Kurosawa's Yojimbo

I tried to pick ones no one else had listed yet. Hope I didn't repeat any.

-Adaptation: seems to often be overshadowed by Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine but it's every bit as great.
-Best in Show: Christopher Guest's documentary-style comedies are terrific.
-Dark City: really "out there" and imaginitave sci-fi noir.
-Glengarry Glen Ross: the writing and acting in this are incredible.
-I'm Not There: I'm not even a huge Bob Dylan fan and I loved it.
-The Killer: has some of the best action sequences I've seen.
-Quiz Show: one of the best films about media I've seen.
-The Purple Rose of Cairo: I think everyone should see at least one Woody Allen movie, just to see if they'd like him. This is one of his most accessible, especially for those who might be put off by how unlikable some of Allen's protagonists are.
-Reversal of Fortune: if nothing else, see it for Jeremy Irons' performance.
-Three Kings: fascinating movie about the Persian Gulf War.

I can only think of three at the moment that weren't already mentioned...

My top recommendation is the criminally overlooked Wonder Boys. Great story, terrific ending, and an awesome cast(Michael Douglas. RDJ, Tobey MaGuire, Rip Torn, Katie Holmes, Frances McDormand all great here).

To Live and Die in L.A.- 80's movie that quite silly at times but is worth watching for William Peterson's performance as the reckless, do anything to avenge the death of his partner Richard Chance, and also what is surely one of the most badass car chases in movie history. And if that doesn't sell you, Wang Chung.

One False Move- Bill Paxton plays hick sheriff who's, "never even pulled his gun," waiting for L.A. murder suspects to make it to his town, one of which was a former lover.

re-read what this thread is about... no blockbusters, or super-hero films

honestly? it'd be a bit much to list. but some i own already and would recommend as well, others i've heard of and have been wanting to see. Really enjoying this thread over all.

A lot of people seem to hate the film precisely because they can't stand cutesy child characters like Fievel. Another argument I've heard a lot is "those aren't cats, they're bears/wolverines/wolves! WTF were you high on Bluth!?" Also I hear Tony's character get made fun of a lot and described as if he came from Newsies (which isn't even a film I've seen or hate). I've also heard people say the background artwork sucks and the animation is jittery and complain that it's too dark and that the music is unmemorable and that there are more bad characters than good ones and that once Fievel threw his hat out onto the ship's deck nobody could ever feel bad for him ever again, etc etc etc. I think that covers most of the ill-thought complaints I've heard.
