Ys IX announcement on the way?

Ys-Next_08-26-18.jpg

The next Ys title is reportedly in development, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo told French website ActuGaming.

“Regarding the Ys series, we are working on a new game,” Kondo told the website. “It will not be a remake but a brand new title. It will be about Adol and it will be right after the events of Ys VIII. I hope you will look forward to it.”

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, the 2016-released latest entry in the Ys series, was announced at Sony’s pre-Tokyo Game Show 2014 press conference. With Tokyo Game Show 2018 approaching, Sony has a similar event planned for September 10. Perhaps an official announcement will be made there?

Published 1 week ago. 429 comments.

Due out in 2019 in Japan.

Ys-IX_12-19-18.jpg

Falcom has announced Ys IX: Monstrum Nox for PlayStation 4. It will launch in 2019 in Japan.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox takes place in Baldeux, which is northeast of Esterior in the Gllia Eldlingen region. Set in a huge city known as “Prison City,” a new adventure surrounding the mysteries hidden in the city will unfold alongside people called “Monstrum” who possess supernatural abilities.

Ys series trademarks such as speedy action (diverse skill attacks, free dashes, and jumps) and battles against giant bosses will return alongside numerous new elements connected to Ys IX‘s setting, including the use of “Supernatural Actions” of Monstrum to freely explore all areas of the field, “Guild Operations” in Prison City, and more.

Here is the official story blurb:

Who are the “Monstrum” that have appeared in the city? What is the secret behind “Prison City?” And what of that redheaded adventurer Adol Christin?

And here is the prologue:

I became someone other than myself. Have you ever that kind of dream?

I think about myself in that dream. Is this me, or is this not me?

Are dreams reality, or are reality dreams? I’ve reached an awfully simple answer.

“Whichever is fine.”

Which is true—or which is not true. Both are reality.

Original 12/26/18 at 3:00 a.m.: The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu offers a few new details on the recently announced Ys IX: Monstrum Nox for PlayStation 4 via an interview with Falcom president and CEO Toshihiro Kondo.

Get the notable tidbits below.

  • The concept of the game is the subtitle “Monstrum Nox” (Monsters’ Night) itself.

  • The game’s setting, Baldeux, is a three-dimensional town with different elevations. Its outskirts include grasslands, forests, and ruins.

  • Set in an era after Ys Seven, Adol will appear at his oldest age in the series yet. His name as an adventurer is becoming known all over the world.

  • Party battles and simple controls return. Additionally, the game introduces supernatural actions that lean on the supernatural abilities possessed by Monstrum. Wall-running and moving as a shadow are also possible.

  • The new “Guild Operations” system is an expansion of Ys VIII‘s “Drifting Village” system.

  • The hooded woman equipped with artificial arms and legs is a major key to the game’s story.

  • Development is currently 50 percent complete.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is due out for PlayStation 4 in 2019 in Japan.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou and Ryokutya2089.

Update 12/27/18 at 2:55 a.m.: More information has surfaced, via the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation, which also has an interview with Falcom president and CEO Toshihiro Kondo.

Here are the tidbits:

  • Adol is the protagonist.

  • Adol’s name has become known all over the world since Ys VI. The increase in the amount of people that know of Adol is one of the highlights of the game.

  • While there is a possibility that characters from past games will appear, they will serve a more minor role.

  • As for the reason Adol comes to the Prison City, it is highly likely he got wrapped up in something based on his previous behavior pattern.

  • The right arm of the woman in the key visual is artificial. She is a guide in this game. She is also the same woman that appeared on the countdown website.

  • There are characters that becamse non-human Monstrum for certain reasons.

  • The dream mentioned in the prologue is unrelated to Ys VIII‘s Dana dreams.
  • You can climb onto and move across rooftops.

  • You will be able to play as Monstrum during the course of the game.\

  • There is also flying-esque floating, as well as aerial state actions.

  • Magic items have been abolished and will be consolidated into Supernatural Actions.

  • The adventuring gear that appeared in Ys VIII will also disappear. Since there are too many items and categories, the plan is to organize such elements together.

  • They would like map-making to stay. They also want to include fishing, but various elements have come up that are under consideration.
Thanks, Ryokutya2089.

Ys IX’s Adol has an unexpected appearance and other tidbits from Dengeki PlayStation

Meet the Monstrum characters.

Ys-9-Dengeki_01-25-19.jpg

The latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation has a new interview with Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo, who shares a few new tidbits about the December 2018-announced Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.

Get the tidbits below.

  • Adol is depicted differently than he was in the series thus far. He has an unexpected atmosphere about him, including his appearance.
  • Baldeux is a prison city full of mysteries. It will portray a drama that can only a prison can depict.
  • The sense of scale the city offers is the greatest in the series thus far.
  • Assume the city is not just a base, but also an action stage built with varied elevations and gimmicks.
  • The staff-wielding Monstrum has an air of darkness about him. He partly resembles Dark Fact from Ys I.
  • The Monstrum wearing a skirt and hat takes the most unexpected actions among the group. Pay attention to her leg area.
  • The pink-haired Monstrum is characterized by her animal-like accessories, which might be a hint to something.
  • The blond-haired Monstrum is arrogant and exudes confidence. He is highlighted by his attitude and the feathers on his shoulders.
  • Compared to the other Monstrum, the woman with the artificial arms and legs holding the lantern has a different role, as she is one the most important characters in that she holds the key to the story. If you compare the countdown website image with the teaser website image, you might discover something new.
  • The long coat-wearing Monstrum is also characterized by his animal-like accessories, but his small stature makes him agile.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is due out for PlayStation 4 in 2019 in Japan.

Ys IX first gameplay, new details

Quick gameplay snippets with three characters.

Ys-9-Footage-Init_03-24-19.jpg

Falcom debuted the first gameplay of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox during Dengeki Game Festival 2019, as well as shared a plethora of new details.

Get the details below.

  • Maps are three-dimensional with different levels of elevation.
  • Jumping and vertical actions have increased.
  • 40 to 50 percent of the map is the city.
  • The prison is a major symbol, and surrounding it is a vast city.
  • Monstrum means “monster,” and Nox means “night.” Combined, that means “Night of the Monsters.” As the title suggests, “night” is an important keyword.
  • In the key visual, the five people behind bars are Monstrum, but the girl not behind bars is different.
  • The way Adol appears is different than before—he is in a significantly unusual form.
  • Each Monstrum has various actions, such as flying, running up walls, and more. You can reach various places by utilizing these actions.
  • Some actions work on traps to cancel their mechanics.
  • Like past Ys titles, Ys IX has simple action that even novices and players not good at action games can enjoy.
  • There are various things Adol needs to do in order to live in the city. He will not be camping as he has in the past. Unlike Ys: The Oath in Felghana, the city itself is also where the adventure happens. “Guild Management” is one element that serves as a means for Adol to live in the city. Adol’s position is special and not the type of thing he can be proud of. He starts from the position of, “So now what?” It is one reason his appearance has yet to be revealed.
  • You can run up any wall.
  • You can generally travel to places seen in the distance.
  • As the largest city in the series yet, there is a ton of variation, from developing areas to slums.
  • There is a Colosseum in the city, and unusual things will occur.
  • The game uses the series’ traditional party system. You will advance while utilizing each Monstrum’s different abilities.
  • Since a Monstrum’s superhuman actions are shared across the party, you will not have to go through the trouble of switching between characters to use them.
  • Since attributes are still important in battle, you will switch between party members while fighting.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is due out for PlayStation 4 this fall in Japan.

Prologue

I became someone other than myself. Have you ever that kind of dream?

I think about myself in that dream. Is this me, or is this not me?

Are dreams reality, or are reality dreams? I’ve reached an awfully simple answer.

“Whichever is fine.”

Which is true—or which is not true. Both are reality.

– An excerpt from “Baldeux’s Cell”

Baldeux: The Prison City

One of the major cities of Gllia Eldlingen, a province of the Romun Empire located in the northeast Esterior peninsula.

It is also known as “Prison City” due to the fact that it is home to a huge prison. Castle walls and a moat stretch around the prison, and remains of the city’s fortress town era are also visible.

Additionally, since Baldeux is a key point for transportation in this area, the city is lined with inns, bars, and shops for travelers and commerce, and in recent years, facilities for the general public such as theaters and public bathhouses are also being built.

Recently, people in town called “Monstrum” have been causing a disturbance and seem to be the target of rumors among residents.

Monstrum

Elusive and mysterious characters that possess supernatural powers.

They do not seem to have a leader. Some help the poor, while others are outlaws that kill people on the street. The reality of the situation is difficult to grasp.

They are called “Monstrum” due to their mysterious powers and strange outfits, and seem to be feared by the residents of Baldeux…

Ys-IX-Monstrum-Nox_2019_03-28-19_005.jpg

Baldeux Prison

Located deep inside the city, Baldeux Prison is the largest prison in the Romun Empire.

It was originallya fortress to protect the national border, but it underwent major reconstruction and is now used as a prison.

The only entrance is the drawbridge in the front, and it is said that it is impossible to escape due to the steep wall of rock and deep moats that surround it.

Since the prison once held those who criticized the Romun Empire as political prisoners, the residents’ impressions of the prison are not very good.

■ Characters

White Cat

Battle Style: Hand-to-Hand Fighting

A chivlarous thief who steals money and goods from the rich to give out to the needy living in the slums, and one of the Monstrum in Baldeux, The Prison City.

She seems to communicate with the city’s residents frequently, and shows off around the city with her nimble and flashy performances.

Utilizing her flexible, cat-like body, she specializes in speedy strike attacks.

Hawk

Battle Style: Dual Swords

A Monstrum who calls himself “Heaven’s Justice” and murders in the city streets.

Not only does he have a bad drinking habit, besides getting into fights with extreme battle enthusiasts, he goes out if his way to start trouble on his own.

Among the Monstrum that appear in Baldeux, he has the least cooperative personality, and even the other Monstrum have trouble with his behavior.

■ System

Heavens Run

A supernatural ability that enables the user to easily run up the vertical surface of a wall. In some dungeons and exploration areas, this ability can open up new routes.

By running up to high areas in the city, you may even make some unexpected discoveries…

Ys-IX-Monstrum-Nox_2019_03-28-19_016.jpg

Hunter Glide

A supernatural ability in which huge wings unfold from the user, enabling them to glide for an extended period of time.

By gliding from a high area, you can travel a significant distance, and depending on how you use it, your range of motion will immediately expand.

In battle, while avoiding the enemy’s attack, you can use this ability for tricky strategies like launching a sneak attack from the skies.

so, I'm assuming this game won't come West until 2020?

if so, that means next year there will be 2 JRPGs for me to look forward to on Playstation. This and Persona 5 Royal.

the only thing that concerns me slightly is that in all the videos so far, the city seems a bit lifeless and empty.

truth be told this is a prision city
and it's sort of the norm for the protagonist character Adol. the first game he was in town and villages that near ghost town cause they were nearly infested with demon'e or monsters nearly wiping all the inhabitants out. it's rare for to have filled with people. other he wouldn't sent their by the goddess to fix thing's .

I guess that makes sense. so yeah, hopefully there's some context in game to explain the relative emptiness of town.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox introduces five new characters, new systems, and map of Balduq

The latest information from Dengeki PlayStation.

The latest issue of Dengeki PlayStaiton has new information on Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, including the reveal of characters Commander Chatelard, Warden Berger, Examiner Ingrid, Marius, and Margotto, and the Boost / Extra Skill, Larva Battle, and Grimwald’s Night systems.

Get the information below.

Characters

  • Commander Chatelard (voiced by Yuuki Ono) – Commander of the Church Knights. A handsome man with tanned skin and silver hair. His position coupled with his appearance has earned him popularity in the city. A battle between him and Hawk will carefully unfold.
  • Warden Berger (voiced by Takahiro Shimura) – A military man with excellent judgment ability and is unsparing to the Monstrum. Although impulsive, he also does things properly, and while he has no hair left on his head, he does have the deep trust of his subordinates.
  • Examiner Ingrid (voiced by Natsuko Hara) (pictured in the above screenshot, via Falcom) – A woman dispatched from the Romun Empire. An excessive realist, she is thickheaded and tries not to believe in rumors and superstitions.
  • Marious (voiced by Shuuta Morisaki) – An amnesia-stricken and friendly young man who was imprisoned, and is capable in both action and insight. His memory loss will be the key to the story.
  • Margot (voiced by Kujira) – A resistance leader from the Gllia area. What is her objective in getting through to the prisoners?
Systems

  • Boost and Extra Skill – By pressing R1 + L1 during battle, you will enter the “Boost” state, which increases your ability, the damage you deal (as well as lowers enemy damage), movement speed, and the number of combo attacks you can land. Additionally, by pressing R1 + L1 in this state, you can activate your “Extra Skill,” which is a unique special move that ends the Boost state. To enter the Boost state, you must fill up a gauge that builds up by landing standard attacks and taking enemy damage.
  • Larva Battles – A dark miasma can be found in various places throughout the game. By touching it, your surroundings will become monotone and a battle will commence. By winning this battle, you will build up your Nox Gauge, which is necessary for “Grimwald’s Night” to occur. There are also hidden, high-difficulty Larva.
  • Grimwald’s Night – Occurs when the Nox Gauge reaches its maximum amount. The Monstrum gather in a different dimension where they must defeat countless Larva. The battle will end when all Larva have been defeated. This will also cause barriers in the city to disappear, expanding your range of actions. This system is based on the Raid and Beast Raid systems of the previous game, but brushed up and equipped with elements unique to this game. You will also receive bonuses based on your score and cooperation with Monstrum outside of your party.
In non-magazine leak-related news, Falcom also shared an image of the map of Balduq, otherwise known as “The Prison City,” where Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is set.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is due out for PlayStation 4 on September 26 in Japan.

Thanks, Ryokutya2089.

This was a great action/RPG from 2017. I thankfully played the PS4 version after the original bad translation was patched into being a great translation.

Ys X Was Planned To Release This Year For Series 35th Anniversary - Noisy Pixel

[Nihom Falcom President Toshihiro] Kondo: We had plans to release Ys X this year to commemorate the 35th anniversary, but due to various considerations, we were unable to do so. It’s still under development, and not much information can be released at this time, but I will say this: Ys X will see a complete renovation of the traditional battle system, unlike VII, VIII and IX, all of which use the same style, and Adol’s age will have a surprising arrangement for older players.
