So after Crash I'm continuing my mission to catch all the BP Winners leaving HBO Max this month, motivational energy towards working my way to seeing all of them. I've got:

Grand Hotel - 1932

Crazy to imagine winning BP as your only nomination, even with the nominee slate so much smaller than it is today. Supposedly the movie that 'invented' the ensemble cast - setting up the style that would later give us hits like Magnolia and Grand Canyon, plus total messes like Crash. Not being super familiar with the actors of this era, I was SHOCKED when I realized that the goofy dying drunk guy was in fact the future Mr. Potter. Both Barrymores are great in this, though, as is Davis, Garbo and the whole cast. The period camerawork leaves a lot to be desired, but overall it holds up strongly and was very enjoyable. 4/5

The Great Ziegfeld - 1936

If Grand Hotel pioneered the All-Star Ensemble With Colliding Storylines, then The Great Ziegfeld pioneered the Bloated Epic Hollywood Nostalgia Fest. And to think Ziegfeld was only in the ground 4 years when they made it! The performances are good, and the production design is astounding, but it just drags on and on, with seemingly half the runtime just being recreations of Ziegfeld's productions. I'll give credit where it's due, but as a whole, it was a chore to get through, ultimately turned into background noise while I did homework. 2/5

Gigi - 1958

HOLY **** this movie aged like milk, and not in a tasty cheese-making way. Like, I try not to judge art out of the context of its time, but this is essentially "Grooming: The Movie." I almost died of cringe, and that's without moving beyond the pervert-vibes, because there's a whole second layer of ick class-wise. This is the polar opposite of "Eat The Rich." Well-acted and pretty to look at, but thematically unbearable. 2.5/5

Mediocrity is subjective. I haven’t seen A Man Called Otto or 80 for Brady but I did enjoy Ticket to Paradise. It was entertaining and at the end of the day, that’s all I’m really looking for in a movie…to be entertained. I think a lot of critics lose sight of that.

What a fun idea! I haven't done anything like that since my whole Hitchcock odyssey, but it might be fun to try to watch every BP winner. Thankfully I've already seen Crash and Green Book so I wouldn't have to subject myself to those again...though Gigi sounds like it might be just as rough.

As some of you know, I live in a small town in Kentucky. It's 10 miles from the 2nd largest city in Ky, Lexington. Lexington has a cool arthouse theater that shows all genres of movies from silents to the newest films. And the new movie opening there today is - COCAINE BEAR....featuring the stuffed "cocaine bear" the movie is about - Kentucky theater to host the 'real,' stuffed 'Cocaine Bear' for premiere of the drug-fueled film

Not sure if this is the right thread but if anyone's checked out Ashleigh Burton's Youtube channel for her "Millennial Movie Monday" reactions, she did "My Girl" two weeks ago. I find her reactions to be hilarious at times and emotional too, Her MCU journey was fun to watch. Now I've seen "My Girl" maybe once, years ago, but I remember what happened in it. I expected her to cry but not this much. Straight up crying, not just tears. Her singing the theme song at the end, while crying, was... Makeup messed up and all.

Yeah I can't remember what MCU reaction it was (I think it was Dark World) but there was one where she broke into tears and talked about her life's struggle.

She sent a really supporting comment to another Youtuber, Mary Cherry(?) who told about her struggles in a video. Ashleigh's a really good person.

Wait, wait, wait...

The nepo baby won best supporting actress last night? She's good in the movie, but that is a film based on the family dynamic, and at it's core, is a film about a mother and daughter. And if Michelle is 51% why it works as well as it did. Hsu is the other 49%. She's a Heath Ledger Joker force of nature in the film.
