I don't think I've seen any of those movies, although I've watched parts of Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard.

Oh friend, objectively speaking, all of those are timeless movies. If you ever get some free time, try to watch them.

Linda Fiorentino’s role would get ANY actress an Oscar today. Damn shame. Same way I feel about Val Kilmer in Tombstone. Easy Oscar today.

I've seen a good chunk of Hitchcock's stuff but I have big blind spots like Strangers on a Train. But yeah, Diabolique blew me away when I first saw it. So bluntly macabre.

I do feel like people root noir in the early-mid 20th century, but there's some crack all up in the 90s-21st century too: Miller's Crossing, Under the SIlver Lake, Under the Skin, stuff like Long Day's Journey into Night (2018). The Yellow Sea (2010) is more of a thriller, but it has that seedy, cynicism to it. Some of Zhangke's work. Other stuff like Black Coal, Thin Ice or A Bittersweet Life (2005). A lot of those Asian ones lean into genre-mixing with action and thriller, but they have those thematic noir tinges.

Crazy to think that Hitch missed out on buying the rights to Diabolique by a few hours.

Finally watched Dune II.

Odd changues at the ends, but it makes sense that they wanna give audience something to cement the idea that "This is bad actually, just in case they don's adapt the next books.


Is noir independent from the time it was created? Like, Is contemporary noir it's own genre?

Contemporary noir has a very distinctive context from it's golden age.
It's like silent films. You can make one today, but it's simply not the same.

Lawrence Kasdan’s Body Heat (1981) was an homage/pastiche of film noir — especially of Double Indemnity. But Wiki describes Body Heat as a “neo-noir” which, in turn, is defined as “… a film genre that adapts the visual style and themes of 1940s and 1950s American film noir for contemporary audiences, often with more graphic depictions of violence and sexuality.”

Ultimately, though, these are just labels. So if you wanted to call a modern movie a “film noir,” I think most folks (with a modicum of knowledge) would understand what you mean.
