The father didn't call the cops. His son sent him a text which he thought was a joke. Then the police wound up contacting the father twenty minutes later.

This had nothing to do with guns or video games. The kid had a mental issue. That much is obvious. This is similar to the Sandy Hook shooting in that Adam Lanza was also given access to guns and played video games but neither of them "made" him do what he did.

Whatever mental illness the kid has is more at fault. All the signs he was potentially dangerous were there: the threats of murder, the violent outbursts. All of these should have been seen as more than a kid mouthing off. It is tragic and unfortunate in any event.

Most likely he will end up in jail, or juvenile detention, either of which will only make him a worse off individual when he's released. He should be in a mental hospital and treated but that'll never happen. The U.S. Justice system is too much into punishment over rehabilitation/treatment to ever consider the kid was literally not in his right mind.

But seriously...there are so many at fault for this. The parents poor understanding of their own child and his mental issues. The child himself. The government who so carelessly spends more money on military funding and then spends pennies to deal with our social and psychological issues that are rampant in our society today.

It's good to learn gun responsibility at a young age but it does not mean given free, unsupervised access to them either.

Making an assumption here: he had access to the gun where it was not locked up out of his reach and either sitting in an unlocked safe or he had a key to the safe.

My uncle takes my cousins hunting all the time. They both have their licences and are 18 and 15 yrs old.

He keeps everything locked up in a giant gun safe that looks like a small bank vault, to which he only knows the combination. You can teach your children about gun safety, you just cant be a moron about it.
