None of the major characters have endured as much change as Superman. In fact, GL, Batman, and Nightwing have had almost no change.

True, but hasn't there been incarnations where Superman has embraced Manhunter-esque or even Batman-esque personality traits before? I mean, it's been awhile since I've picked up an Action Comic (and so on) but I've seen my share of radical Supermen in my time and I assume after over 70 years of publication, this isn't the first or last 'unique' Superman.

In my opinion, I think DC changed Supes characterization for marketing purposes revolving around the New 52. It may or may not be connected to the upcoming film, but I'm not ready to jump on that boat just yet until I see proof.
