1984 - Anyone read it?

One of my favorite books, and the movie has colossal bush.

Fantastic book. Probably my favourite. Animal Farm is great too.

Let's actually talk about the book. Incredibly depressing. Some of the best pieces of art/literature/music are often depressing. 1984 describes pretty much the perfect totalarian society. Perfect in that there is no way it can be toppled... it's perfect. It made me just very sad. But in a good way, 'cause it's such a good and thought provoking book.

I loved animal farm which for some reason I just read this year and 1984 sits on my bookshelf waiting to be read I've read Brave New World does that count for anything...

Animal Farm is good. I've also read Brave New World!!!

Anthem is my favorite book though.

While I preferred Animal Farm due to it's constant symbolism, 1984 was a brilliant read. It remained interesting throughout.

They're both brilliant, but I prefer 1984. Probably because it's so realistic.

It's just scary, the amount of things Orwell predicted. The Party scares the crap out of me.

read it a few times- along with Animal Farm, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451 it was one of my favorites in high school. Orwell is really one of the greatest political writers/thinkers we've ever had. How far into the story are you, Malice?

1984, but I liked more the sequel 1985 and a little bit more 1986, which is when I was born

I read last year during my senior year of High School and it was probably the best book that we were required to read.

decently entertaining story, but for literary purposes, not nearly as complex as many make it out to be.

an enjoyable read, or in malice's case, listen.

it survives on the strength of it's ideas and the pure elegance with which they are convied rather than what most would term literary qualities. not many books deal with total defeat either.

and yes i've read it and suggested others read it previously.

also 1984 is influenced by history asmuch as thinking of the future of technology's possible effects in the hands of leaders just like leaders in the past.

nower days people don't need to rewrite the past. they just make sure the present is seen the way they want it seen by most people. history is recorded as they like anyway. enemies change over a long enough time frame that it doesn't matter who remembers. since they are a minority.

1984 was decent but Animal Farm floored me. That is a very good and important book. I suggest reading that one too.

What scares me about The Party in 1984 is that I don't see how that system can ever be toppled or stopped. I need to read it again, it's been too long.
