I believe the first official pic of the Joker is the Joker's true appearence beneath the flesh-colored face-paint and clown face-paint on top of that. The first pic has the grayish tone to the Joker's face, that TDK Joker is supposed to have, no tan can be seen underneath, and the lips in the new pic look like their hiding the grotesque lips in older pic. The face in the older pic looks more damaged and natural, too. Also, the left side of the Joker's bottom lip looks kind of melted (as if by chemicals) in the older pic.

That's what I was thinking as well, but I also realized the first image is a dead on shot, with lighting, and photoshop filters...

Where as the second shot, is from the side, and looks like a screen cap...

So it is hard to compare because they are totally different.

I think the Joker'll look much more sinister the more he actually smiles or grins maniacally.

I agree that the first pic is probably gonna be his true/final look. Whether or not he's wearing flesh-colored make-up with his white skin showing through or vice-versa in the second one is the real question. I definitely prefer the first pic, as his skin is clearly all white and the smile looks a lot cooler (could just be the angle, though).

Ugh. The second pic is so much better.

Hate that first picture - just isn't the Joker.

Hate both of them. The 2nd pic basically confirms that the Joker wears makeup.

:csad:

Just so you people know, it's still the same joker, he goes through alterations in the movie. He starts off looking more like the rachel knife picture then gets more hidious as we have seen in the leaked pictures!

I have two problems with the second picture. His lips are nowhere near as red as they should be IMO and his hair is showing way too much brown. I think they should have died Ledgers hair black and then put in the green highlights.

looks like we got a cry baby.
listen if u dont like it..... who cares! ur still going to pay $10 and see the movie.

But by comparison to the 1st pic posted, the second is miles closer to the comic book incarnations.

I agree, and if the rumor of Joker being perma-white and not painting his face is true ill be extreamly happy.

Also this new pic kind of makes up for the teaser.

Just as an aside, has anyone noticed how simialr the first official images from the film for Batman Begins

2nd picture is better, and Im still going with the idea that the makeup thing is part of the twist

I like how some people come onto a movie board to argue the point, "You shouldn't argue over this movie on a movie board." The stance becomes self-refuting to the point that you have to wonder why the hell they're even here.

That sloppy lipstick really irritates me. I'm not impressed by either pic. But then again, when I saw the Tumbler and Dr. Crane, I wasn't at all impressed either. Then watching BB, and seeing how everything worked within the context of the movie, I really appreciated what they did with the Tumbler and Dr. Crane. I'm hoping the same applies with the Joker because right now there is a lot to be desired.

Agreed.

I don't love either of them, but the second is much better than the first IMO. In the first, the scarring looks ridiculous, I hate the messy red lipstick, nor do I like the serious expression on The Joker's face. In the second picture, it confirms he wears purple, has green hair(even though it's dyed), the scarring isn't too over the top, and I think it's a rather cool screen shot. But on the downside, it appears as though the Joker wears makeup to appear chalk white, but I can live with that.

Well, they both look awful for different reasons.

The first picture is about as un-Joker as one can get while still having a white face and red lipstick. No panache, no flair, no sense of style. Which would have worked before he repaired his face with surgery and grew into his new persona and the character developed in the film.

The second picture has some Joker elements to it, but all of the stylistic elements that differ from the Joker character in the comics miss the point entirely. If it is indeed makeup and he looks "normal" once the makeup is gone, well that really throws the character out of the window. The theme of the Joker character is that one bad day can change a normal man into the clown-faced nutjob that we all know and love. The dynamic between Batman and The Joker is given further depth because Batman can become Bruce Wayne whenever he wants, while The Joker cannot because of his permanent clown face. The whole point of the escalation scene at the end of Batman Begins is that the new villains roaming Gotham aren't normal criminals in masks. They're a whole different breed that can't have lives outside of crime.

Everything may change with the final film, but going by the picture above, the image captures nothing of what The Joker means. Sure, elements are there and it may make for good filmmaking but it seems that Nolan and collaborators are trying too hard to break the mold that they're forgetting what has made the character an icon and most likely the greatest villain in comic book history. I am reminded of a conversation that I believe is on the Sleepy Hollow DVD. Johnny Depp wanted his Ichabod Crane to have a bunch of prosthetics to emphasize the awkwardness of the character. Tim Burton said no, that those elements would be brought out in the performance. I think it applies to this in that Nolan and company could have gave the world a traditional looking joker, like basically any of the incarnations of the character the world has ever seen. Then instead of being iconoclastic, this Joker could have set itself apart through Heath Ledger's performance. I'm of the thought that wacky makeup and twists involving disguises shouldn't compensate for a great performance. I'm not saying that's the case with this film, but there is an idea that this could be the case.

This is all very long and I'm not sure how coherent it is, but I suppose what my thoughts boil down to are if an actor is as good as people think Ledger is, he should be able to give a good enough performance regardless of the direction the makeup takes. That being said, drastic changes in the aesthetics of a character are a little like ignoring almost 70 years if iconic depictions. It's quite possible that Nolan and Ledger's Joker may be fantastic and break the mold and become the dominant Joker portrayal for years to come. But there is something to be said about classic portrayals. And, long story short, the makeup job looks half-assed.

*Vomits*

That certainly it disturbing...

It took a second look to notice the white makeup on her face. And the tears. And the rope. With that picture and this one:

Look at those homoerotic undertones with the lipstick and perfume coupled with the frame photo of Batman lovingly stared at while applying his makeup. I'm convinced Joel Schumacher is behind that site.

I disagree. I think you've got it the wrong way around. Look at the scar on his right cheek in both pictures. Why would it start out looking semi-healed and then become more gruesome. The movie isn't running backwards (actually, this being Nolan...). I think it's more likely the Knife pic is from later in the movie, and the IBIHDT pic is from earlier. Meaning the scars will get less gruesome as the movie progresses.
