2010 NFL Draft Discussion

Same could have been said for DHB.

Suh will be the guy if we stay at 2. I'm finally to the point of being excited about him. That ESPN Sports Science analysis alleviated my fear of Suh being a product of hype rather than a player that truly measures out as being a special physical freak. Suh will be a wonderful piece to this defense giving us tremendous flexibility on our line.

So many options:

Run downs:
RE: KVB/McBride
NT: Sammie Lee Hill/Suh/Williams
UT: Corey Williams/Suh
LE: Suh/Hunter

Pass downs:
RE: KVB/McBride/Peterson
NT: Suh/Williams
UT: Williams/Suh
LE: Cliff Avril

Looks like Follett may take Sims spot, likely giving us

Follett-Levy-Peterson at linebacker on first and second down, probably with Dizon as a nickel linebacker in passing situations.

Yeah that wouldnt be bad. I'm hoping the Rams trade of Carriker today doesnt signal them freeing up space for Suh.

As for our LB's, I wouldnt be surprised to see them sign Keith Bulluck or Akin Ayodele. They need some experience and beef back there. While I like Follett, I think Dizon is terrible. he's the quintessential awful Millen/Marinelli second round pick, right up there next to Drew Stanton. Guy is too small and fragile and basically a glorified special teamer.

It's official Tebow won't be at the draft:

Source: Tebow to watch draft at home

Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has decided not to attend the NFL draft in New York City and instead will watch it at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

According to the source, Tebow believes it would be too hard to get his whole family and his friends to New York in time for the draft's first round on Thursday night.

It is possible the former Heisman Trophy winner won't be taken Thursday, because the second round doesn't start until Friday.

Tebow helped Florida win two national championships in the Gators' run-heavy system, but his skills may not translate to some NFL teams' passing-centric offenses.

Tebow has worked on his mechanics before the draft and unveiled his new look at Florida's pro day last month. The biggest difference is that he has shortened his throwing motion to get rid of the ball quicker.

this is how it should happen for us (49ers)

13th mike Iupati = a beast
17th joe haden = best cb in the draft

we'd be set:)

I just hope there's no truth to the rumor about taking Jimmy Clausen with one of these picks, we dont need him. If we do take him I'll denounce my 49ers and become a ...COWBOY FAN:cmad: OHH SWEET LORD

I don't think Haden drops to 17 and I don't really like Iupati for San Fran even. The 49ers REALLY need a right tackle, and while many contend Iupati has the ability to eventually play the position - he looked awful in the Senior Bowl and won't be remotely ready in 2010 at the position.

I can guarantee you the 9ers have no interest in Clausen.

I wouldn't rule at anything regarding St. Louis - in my opinion the best move on the table for them is taking Suh, so I certainly won't rule it out for them.

The good news is that the Lions are essentially in a nose lose situation. If we stay at 2, we are going to get Suh. If Suh is not available at 2, we have the ability to trade down (due to Bradford being on the board) and we can get more picks in one of the most talented draft classes in league history.

For the first time in a long time, you should be without nerves on draft day. We have a GM who you should fine placing trust in.

Norm, you really think Gerhart is going to go in the third round? I think he's going to be a mid to high second rounder. I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers take interest in him if he's there in the second round to compliment Mendenhall and establish a power running game.

If they trade Ben to the Raiders, I could see the Steelers either taking Clauson if he's on the board, Berry if he's still on the board, or a big lineman and then grab a CB with their second pick (Maybe even Gerhart if they don't think he's going to drop to them in the second round). If they're intending on trading Ben, the Steelers will NEED a big power back to compliment Mendenhall to take pressure off Leftwich/Dixon or their rookie QB.

I do think the Steelers may go BPA until the third round and possibly pick up LeFeaver or Tony Pike to give them a shot, since the top four QB's are going to be gone by the time Buffalo picks in the second round.

Third round seems about right for Gerhart considering his measurables, position and draft class. Gerhart is a solid 2-3rd round talent, and in some drafts could possibly be a first rounder.

Mendenhall himself is a lot like Gerhart. Both are larger (Gerhart is only a shade bigger), powerful backs with a bit of speed to them (Gerhart's 4.5 range 40 is significantly faster than Shonn Greene's 4.65 for example).

The Steelers aren't going to draft Gerhart. They are more likely to take a smaller, faster back like Dexter McClester from Ole Miss. Something more in the Willie Parker mold.

Gerhart will go as early as round 2 to San Diego or as late as the Bengals' compensation pick in round 3.

Clausen is certainly a possibility, though I think Dennis Dixon is likely to start the season for them no matter what goes on.

Forget names like LeFeaver and Pike, you are likely to never care about them again after this weekend. The QB's the Steelers will be looking (and you are right, possibly in round 3) are names like Jonathon Crompton and John Skelton.

If I'm a Steeler fan, I am watching Skelton in particular on Friday and Saturday. I think that could be the Steeler's man. The guy is extremely raw coming out of Fordham, but he has the body of a professional NFL QB.

I'm surprised you haven't donned your Mel Kiper avvy yet, Norm.

I didn't see much POWER out of Mendenhall last year, more like big and quick, so I wasn't sure if the Steelers would want a true Bettis like RB. I do think that if they trade to 8, and a QB and Berry are gone, I wouldn't be shocked if CJ Spiller was a Steeler.

I agree that LeFeaver and Pike aren't going to amount to much, as they're system QB's (My research on this draft isn't as thorough as last year). I expect them to go with a QB in the later rounds to sit behind Leftwich and Dixon, even if Ben doesn't get traded this year.

As for Gerhart, he's definitely going second round. The guy has unbelievable power. San Diego is a definite possibility for him, where he can compliment Sproles or whoever else they draft.

I haven't earned it this year. I only did like four mock drafts this season, I was slacking. I am starting to hate mock drafts just because the format is so constraining. I am going to do a team-by-team analysis tomorrow before the draft for anyone interested - I'll provide a few options for every round in the draft factoring in team scheme, philosophy and leadership history.

You are right in saying that Mendenhall is not a Bettis-type powerback, but I am not sure Gerhart is that sort of back either. Gerhart made a living powering over players in the Pac 10, but he isn't going to get away with that raw power in the big leagues.

You're definitely on the right track in terms of looking at the Steelers to round out their running game - you're logic about the running game being even more important in a post-Big Ben Pittsburgh is spot on. It would be extremely interesting to see how a Dexter McClester would fair in that offense. Or, perhaps even Jehvad Best - depending on how they choose to invest any possible pick they get from Oakland.

McCluster would be a great addition to the Steelers, Spiller would be an even better fit if Pittsburgh trades Ben.

I think another spot for Gerhart could be Houston. They have Slaton, who's that pass catching potential speedster, and are in need of a bruising power back to help free up Andre Johnson. I think they'll go CB in the first round, then possibly look to Gerhart if he's there in the second.

Houston runs a zone blocking scheme that I don't think would best take advantage of Gerhart's talents. No, the running back that best fits what Houston's looking for is Jonathon Dwyer. His position in GT's triple option is similar to the zone blocking system Houston employs.

I've heard Houston is in love with Ryan Matthews but I think they need more help in the defensive backfield with Robinson gone now, that's why I have them taking Kareem Jackson in my mock draft.

Dallas will probably not draft until Friday. I see them trading down and then trading down again 50 more times like they did last year.

I had a dream...about the draft...last night.

- Sam Bradford falls out of the first round.
- Colt McCoy goes to the Raiders.

49ers select

THIS WILL MAKE ME HAPPY... I WILL DO BACKFLIPS

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is how Al Davis makes his draft picks, though I didn't know Zombies actually needed to sleep.

You're not wrong, but they got like 4 rookies coming off the DL next year. So they can't afford to stockpile picks and bring in another 10 guys. If anything they will trade up if one of the safeties or guard/tackles get awfully close to 27. I think they should trade up for Pouncey. Anthony Davis ain't worth it unless the price is right. I don't like Taylor Mays, and would rather give up two firsts to get up to Earl Thomas, but I don't see Jerry giving up that much.

Whoever the Raiders draft, Tom Cable will celebrate by punching people.

It would be nice if Raiders trade their #8 pick to Steelers for Big Ben, but I think Al Davis just likes the power to screw up the draft year after year.

Rolando McClain. Firstly, I find it very difficult to believe that he can truly be happy about Oakland. Second...the JaFatty experiment continues :(

McClain is definitely not a bad pick for the Raiders. One of their better picks from the past few years.

The Bills grabbed CJ Spiller in about 2 seconds, and I don't blame them. Buffalo in december, they'll need Lynch, Jackson, and Spiller to pound the rock in the snow and wind.

You could tell Berman and company were trying not to laugh and rip into Oakland.

But hey, they made a good pick
I kinda sorta was expecting to hear the Hammer say Oakland picked Jimmy Clausen.
