2015 was going to be one crowded year

The downside is a few of these tentpoles are gonna fall hard. When the swimming pool is that full, somebody ends up on the bottom drowned.

If you listened in Geography class, you'd know Northern Virginia isn't a state. :o

2015 gets a bit more crowded with the Minions movie moving to 7/10.

Despicable Me 2 was a monstrous hit last summer in that spot, as well as its predecessor. Illumination Entertainment is quickly eclipsing DWA and Blue Sky as Pixar's competitor... and Universal knows it.

I don't know how much Minions will take away from Batman vs. Superman during its second weekend.

Is it me or most animation studios are suffering. If its not financially, it's creatively.

Yeah Illumunation is the hot ticket now with a smart business plan too.

Minions VS Batman and Superman? Oh, Lord.

I don't know why Universal opted to put it for July 10, rather than Independence Day weekend where DM2 absolutely killed.

But it's not like Disney's colossally stupid move to pit The Lone Ranger against Despicable Me 2 on the same day (not that the former was going to do that well anyway). There's a week between these two films, but I don't know. People still love those frackin' Minions. :csad:

WB isn't going to move Batman vs. Superman off that July 17 date, as the mid-July spot is still a good-luck charm for the studio. (Even though Pacific Rim underperformed, The Conjuring saved their behinds.)

Minions is going to have strong legs at the box-office and I think it will be a strong competition to Batman/Superman.

For Jurassic Park 4/Jurassic World, they need to go back to this for it to be good. Lost World and JP3 lacked moments like this.

You're right. The strong performance of both Monsters University and World War Z definitely impacted MOS' earnings. I'm also reminded of 2011, when Hangover Part II took the win over Kung Fu Panda 2 on Memorial Day weekend.

But I think the buzz of Ben Affleck as Batman will draw some older viewers who don't want to see Minions with their kids or wouldn't have seen BvS otherwise. Zack Snyder's under a lot of pressure to make this work, and justify Affleck's casting just three years after Bale.

It just depends.

those moments work only in the first movie. not everyone can direct actors looking in slow motion like Spielberg.

What I'm saying is we need to bring back that sense of wonder we get whenever we see a Dinosaur on screen

i think there will never be this sense of wonder. you can only have it with a new planet, new animals, new creatures,.....

Which reminds me, in the Ted 2 thread I mentioned how I'm pretty sure at least one studio is going to bankrupt itself or come close in 2015 with so many big movies coming out at once. Someone's not going to make back their money and it could be disasterous for one of them.

Difference between Ted 2 and others is that there's less chance of that film flopping due to its cost. Ted 2 is not going to get a $100-200 million dollar budget.

No, Ted 2 isn't a tentpole but it's coming out with them which got me thinking of just how many movies are going to be released with big budgets that year.

How exactly are we classifying tentpoles here? Ted made over a half a billion dollars for the first film.

I said it wasn't because it didn't cost $300-400~ million to make which is becoming the standard for tentpole films. It was a success, but it wasn't a huge monetary investment compared to most.

I don't understand how the budget of the film constitutes whether it's considered a tentpole or not. Most summer film try to establish themselves as event movies regardless of budget.
