30 years.

30 years today since the release of Superman, the first major comic book movie. And what have we seen since? I'll tell ya what we've seen since.

All we've seen are Flash Gordon, Popeye, Superman II, Heavy Metal, Annie, Swamp Thing, Superman III, Sheena, Supergirl, Howard the Duck, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, The Return of Swamp Thing, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Punisher, Dick Tracy, Captain America, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, The Rocketeer, Brenda Starr, Batman Returns, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, The Crow, The Mask, Timecop, Ri¢hie Ri¢h, Tank Girl, Batman Forever, Judge Dredd, Barb Wire, The Phantom, The Crow: City of Angels, Batman & Robin, Men in Black, Spawn, Steel, Prince Valiant, Blade, Virus, Mystery Men, The Crow: Salvation, Heavy Metal 2000, X-Men, Monkeybone, Josie and the Pussycats, Ghost World, From Hell, Blade II, Spider-Man, Men in Black II, Road to Perdition, Daredevil, Bulletproof Monk, X2, Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer), Hulk, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, American Splendor, Hellboy, The Punisher (again), Garfield, Spider-Man 2, Blueberry, Catwoman, Blade: Trinity, Elektra, Constantine, Son of the Mask, Oldboy, Sin City, The Crow: Wicked Prayer, Batman Begins (again), Fantastic Four, A History of Violence, V for Vendetta, Art School Confidential, X-Men: The Last Stand, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, Superman Returns, Zoom, Ghost Rider, 300, TMNT, Spider-Man 3, 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, 30 Days of Night, Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Incredible Hulk (again), Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Dark Knight, and Punisher: War Zone ( ... again)

Now, I don't know about you, but, in my opinion, that's not nearly enough.

When are movie makers gonna stop snobbishly turning their noses up at comic books, and start looking at them as the cash cows they could be, if only they'd take a chance on them?

But no. What do they keep giving us? Bloody SHAKESPEARE, over and OVER again. The Two Gentlemen of This, The Merry Wives of That. If ya ask me, bringing the Prince of Denmark back from the dead for Hamlet 2 was just cynical beyond belief. And the reboots. Jesus. Enough with the bloody REBOOTS. I swear, if I see another pathetic attempt at Troilus and Cressida, I'll be forced to subject myself to repeated viewings of Four Christmases, just to wash out the foul taste of creative redundancy.

I tell ya, Hollywood better get their asses moving and start making more comic book movies. Eight a year will simply not suffice.

wtf:huh: there are way more comic movies coming out now than any one other type of movie.

Annnnnnnd? :o

Plus... he made Blade 3 and Dark City... so it's a toss up if he is right or not.

If a screenwriter hates a movie he's written, I take that as a sign that the movie's to be avoided.

You forgot:

Batman: The Movie
Conan The Barbarian
Conan The Destroyer
Red Sonja
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
A History of Violence
American Splendor
Ghost World

You could also go one step further and include:

The Incredible Hulk Returns
Trial of the Incredible Hulk
Death of the Incredible Hulk
Spider-Man (1977)
Captain America
Captain America II: Death Too Soon
Dr. Strange
Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
The Batman vs. Dracula
Batman: Gotham Knight
Superman: Doomsday
Justice League: New Frontier
Ultimate Avengers
Ultimate Avengers 2
The Invincible Iron Man
Dr. Strange (Animated)

------

And I agree...there needs to be more. Specifically from DC in my opinion. 'Flash,' 'GL' and 'WW' films are LOOOOONNNNGGG overdue.

Oh and side note...since your list is going in release order...The Dolph Lundgren 'Punisher' came out the year before the first live action 'Ninja Turtles' film.

Up next:

The Spirit
Watchmen
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Comic book movies, it seems, have always been pretty popular.

Totally.

I attribute it to the fact that comics present legendary tales and very human concepts, struggles and tribulations in a stylized, fun and highly entertaining fashion.

To be honest, I don't understand why comic books recieve as much ridicule as they do. There are a great deal of pieces in the industry (Watchmen being an obvious choice)...some that even involve mainstream Marvel and DC characters...that are very well written literature.

It's funny how superheroes and their fans are constantly mocked and looked down upon when simultaneously a film like "The Dark Knight" is making more money than any other film has in the last 9 years.

Go figure lol

Batman was a television spin-off, so I didn't count it. Conan originally appeared in the pulps, so I don't technically consider his movies comic book movies. I could count Red Sonja, who did originally appear in the comics, but I decided not to, as she's so connected to Conan; his She-Hulk, I guess, in a way. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was another television spin-off. Nick Fury: Agent of Shield was a TV movie, so I didn't count it. You're right though about A History of Violence, American Splendor, and Ghost World. You could also add Art School Confidential to that list. I didn't count any of the Hulk TV movies, because they're television spin-offs and TV movies. I didn't include the Spider-Man pilot, or the failed Captain America or Dr. Strange pilots, just because they're pilots. I didn't include any of the other animated Batman movies, because they went straight to video instead of getting a theatrical release, and they're television spin-offs. Same reason why I didn't include Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, or any of the animated Marvel movies.

With regards to you saying you agree, there needs to be more, I don't think you get the point of what I was saying. It seems to have sailed over everyone's head who responded. I was trying to be funny, sarcastic, saying that there are really too many of them. Why did you think I made up all that stuff about Shakespeare movies that don't exist? It was all just part of the joke. Although I do agree with you that there should have been Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman movies by now. Too many of the 75 I listed are independents, not DC or Marvel. In fact, nearly half of them are independents, I think. That's crazy.

With regards to the first Punisher movie, I couldn't find a release date for it in the States, so I settled for its release date in the UK, which was a couple of months after the first Turtles movie was released in the States.

And The Spirit will be the eighth comic book movie released this year. I don't think any year ever has ever seen that many comic book movies.

I am glad that comic book movies are becoming more popular, but at the same time i am wary. I don't want them to become too commercialized and for the studios to just churn out crap every year to make a quick buck. Thats the feeling i'm getting, as they become more popular and bigger earners the studios will start pumping half assed efforts out. That could be very detrimental for the comic world.

I do like what Marvel is doing, setting up it's own studio so we could actually have a MU in film form. I really want to see Deadpool and Ironfist movies in particular. Both great characters with very interesting origins and stories to use.

Better comics than games. Wanna see "Super Mario Brothers 2: Leguizamo learns to Dance"? Didn't think so.

From Hell by Alan Moore, adapted to screen starring Johnny Depp.
