4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons announced, nerds in uproar

I have this one....

:)

I wanna get one with Jesus having his hands out, and a d20 in his right hand, and it says "Jesus Saves, the rest of you take damage"

It draws us deeper and deeper into the bowels of El Diablo. Where there's plenty of Mountain Dew and Cheetos, and scoring with the women there only requires a roll of 7 or better on a d20.

Damn you Pierre! :cmad:

But...mine would have Jesus on it actually with dice.

Here's another good one, but it really only works if worn by a woman:

I still play first edition. Y'know... those books don't wear out, so there's no need for me to waste my money.

In the 8th grade I bought all the books and things for some wierd reason or another, and it was cool to read through them, however I just don't have the tiem for a game.

June 2008 follow-up for interested nerds:

So 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons got released last week (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual). There's the usual debates going on about changes that have been made (Vorpal swords don't behead anymore! The "second wind" attacks are like video games! No metallic dragons in the Monster Manual! etc).

However, the biggest controversy centers around the fact that the Dungeons & Dragons Insider online resources are not up and running, despite months of advertising to the contrary. The tie-in online gamer tools that were supposed to be up for free beta-testing upon release of the 4th edition books have suddenly been revealed to be months away from completion. This revelation was only made clear after the opening weekend of book sales was over. An accidental oversight, or an intentional one?

Of course, all three of the new 4th edition books can be seen for free if you know where to look (rhymes with "schmit florrent"), and some would argue that the online tools are just optional anyway....

But I'm still waving my +3 Dwarven greataxe in anger! :cmad:

Schmidt Florrent was the most innovative accordionist of the 20th century.
Where are the Schmidt Florrents for the 21st? :(

I actually, uh, aquired it about two weeks ago, and so far it looks nice, aside from "it's not D&D!!"

Drakon, what's a good crash course of stuff I need to start D&D? I play munchkin now but i want something more real. Well, more nerdy.

That's a pretty open ended question. I mean, it depends on how deep you want to get into it, and what you want out of it. I mean, sure, you can play D&D, but if nobody's interested in the campaigns, you're gonna be lonely come game night. If you want something a little more story driven, you might want to consider World of Darkness/White Wolf games [Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, and so forth]. If you want more technical rules but wanna ditch the fantasy setting, you could go with d20 Modern/Future, or go futuristic with simpler rules and go with Shadowrun, which [at least 4e] only uses d6.

Once you decide what you and your friends want from the gaming experience, then it's time to get what you need. Some games require/recommend the use of miniatures, while others don't. Unless LARPing [Live Action Role Playing--Youtube/Wiki it to see what I mean], you're gonna need dice, which you can get at an hobby store. I've always found it good to have more than one set, just in case. A personal touch I like to use when I'm storyteller/DM is I like to have a CD with me of different songs for different occasions to kinda help set the pace; a chase or battle would have a fast song, whereas drinking in the pub you'd hear the local musicians play their songs.

If you just want to play straight D&D, all you really need are the source books [Player's handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual], dice, and some printed out character sheets, which are found in the back of the PHB.
