78,000 People to live on Mars

What I'm interested in is how exactly are they going to set up a form of government over there? Law enforcement etc.

They'll be permanent settlements someday. But going to Mars is far different that any other exploration in human history. At this point I don't see how these people can go and not want to return at some point.
There will always be someone who changes their minds....but it becomes a case of tough luck, you made your choice.

Maybe all 78,000 people are 50-55 now....by that time they'd only have a few years to live anyway :D
I will turn 56 in June.......

Thats a great point I never thought of.

I'm sure there is a long psychological evaluation process in determining who is able to travel. I don't think they'll be sending criminals out there with your mom and dad.

Its literally the start of the plot to the movie Elysium.

The rich live in an orbital ring above Earth while the poor are left to fend for themselves on a destroyed, ruined planet Earth.

You must not have been let in on our secret meeting. It's not that the super rich celebs are leaving Earth to go live in some fantasy future city on a new planet. It's just that we, the ppl of Earth, have tricked them into thinking that. We're actually just sending Honey Boo-Boo and family, Sarah Palin, Justin Bieber, and a few 100 another annoying celebrities to live on a barren red rock. Then in one hundred or so years, if they haven't killed themselves by stuffing peanut butter sandwiches in their oxygen producing machine, the rest of us can then come up and take over the now sustainable planet.

At first it will probably be like an expedition to the Antarctic....someone appointed to be the leader....later they can become a government entity.

And remember...they are NOT sending 78,000 people to Mars....78,000 people have APPLIED to go.

I'm thinking about signing up just so I can set up a space bar.

Did you sign up C. LEE?
Nope, I didn't sign up.

Spend your last days the best way you can, in friggin space!

I see that my previous response went totally over your head. Implying that someone my age only has a couple of years left...is **fill in the blank with many infractionable terms**.

I was joking C.

If I sign up and get accepted to go to Mars, do I still have to pay my student loans?

Man, it would be something if there were 1 or 2 hype members posting from Mars!

I don't have that much of an explorer's soul that I wouldn't want to risk not coming back. If I had nothing to live for here on this planet I'd probably just be like, **** it, sign me up. If it got so bad here that would probably be the only reason I'd go.

Yeah, they're only sending around 28 to 40. But I'm assuming that if the first colonization starts to go well, they'll start sending more people. So they'll have to set up some kind of government organization over there once that starts happening.

Which could be interesting, given that we have people from all over the world who will be going.

Man, this is just crazy. I mean, I knew that this was possible, but I really didn't expect it to happen in my lifetime. I won't lie though, there is something enticing about it. And frightening at the same time. But it would be an adventure.

I'm wondering exactly what the requirements would be though. There would have to be people who would have to know how to fix the equipment they're using and the homes they're living in. That would significantly cut down on who could apply because I doubt the tech they're using is all that simple. And are they going to be bringing animals with them to cultivate food? You'd need people who could handle taking care of livestock if that were the case. Or are they just bringing food stores and planting gardens? That's probably more likely.

Honestly, joking aside, the first colonists are going to have a hard time. As exciting as space travel sounds, when you really think on it...it's not an enviable position to be in. I doubt they'll let you freely rocket back to Earth if you decide it's not for you.

Remember, there's not going to be a city, internet, stores, ect. Since the atmosphere is unlivable, and supplies wont' last forever. Chances are you're going to be living in a giant dome with poor sunlight in most areas. You'll have to live one what you plant and grow (chances are no meat outside of what canned goods you bring with you). It's going to be a small population, so you're getting tired, or annoyed at someone could make life difficult. There's probably also going to be a lot of manual labor. Living in an inhospitable wastelands going to require a lot of work to make it livable.

Then there's the view. Looking at the stars will probably be the same as Earth. Past that though, everything will be red, no trees, lakes, ect. I'd imagine if you're going to go up there to live, it's going to be because you genuinely want to make an impact on history, and help colonize a planet. If you're doing it just because you think space is exciting, chances are you're going to get there, and regret it half a year later.

Not trying to be a downer, it's just that something like that is very life altering. People don't always think past the romantic idealization of what they think it will be, compared to the reality of it.

Maybe this what humanity needs. We have become too comfortable living the easy life. People who explored the world, most died. There is an inherent risk we take that was stated earlier in other posts. I think its our duty and inherit nature to explore beyond our boundaries regardless of the implications of danger.

Its the only way we'll progress as a species. I look forward to hopefully seeing humanity in my lifetime explore space in ways never imagined before.

There many people who can be very useful doing various jobs who aren't exactly spending all their time outside in the sunshine anyway. At first...most of your time will be spent staying alive, not much time to sit around missing the mall. I'm sure there will be plenty of tests to weed out the ones who would have trouble with the idea of what looms ahead for them.

Not to mention all the venomous Martian crabs.

I definitely agree that there are people that can do it. I just wonder how many of the applicants think they're going to land on Mars with a shiny metal and glass city awaiting them. There are plenty of ppl willing to do the work though, that I'm sure can handle the mental, and physical stress. It's no different from pioneering at other times in our history (well, outside of the whole unlivable, inhospitable thing, lol). A few brave souls will bare the burden, and hardships, and create a place where others can then come in and live. I just meant that too many people will try to get into this thinking it's going to be like living in a sci-fi movie.

If we ever get mars to sci-fi movie like status, it's probably going to be 50 years after we've already gotten Earth to that point. Mars will need to be colonized from the ground up, slowly, and steadily.

I honestly think that most if not all of the people who could be qualified physically and mentally to go through with something like this would be retired Military/CIA/FBI and the like. Maybe a handful of leading scientists in biology/physiology/surgeons/doctors/etc.

It was about time something like this happened, i have to wonder though, why was this only posted now? This is over a month old. Either way i'm excited, it's part of the human nature to want to explore past what it already knows. Seeing some of the coments here also reminds me of the many that were against exploration back in the 14th-16th century and how they found it a waste of resources.

As for those asking why we don't try colonising the moon instead i advise to simply do a wikipedia research.

Are any of the Americans who have signed up the useless untalented reality TV stars?

"Next Season on Jersey Shore! Mission to Mars everyone!!! Jager bombs jager bombs jager bombs!" :csad:
