Looks sort of like a mash up between Christmas Story and Jingle All the Way. I’ll definitely watch

This was a good holiday watch. It’s a mix of The Goldbergs meet Christmas Story meets Wonder Years. It starts slow but gets better in the second half. I don’t think they needed to show the present day scenes at all. Could have just had narration like Christmas Story

Why set it in late 80's, when the tech is early 80's ?

I thought the same thing about it being set in 1988. Was it literally just so they could make a few Die Hard references? Nintendo had been out for three years at that point. Surely at least one of those kids would have had it by then?

That aside though, this was better than I thought it'd be. It had a few moments where I legitimately laughed out loud and some of the more emotional bits landed as well.

I’m not sure when the popularity hit in North America. I do remember it still being a big thing late 80s/early 90s till SNES was released.

Yes the timing is a bit off but honestly can overlook it since the year doesn’t make or break the themes of the story.
