WHA--? It feels so much like an 80s film. Is the killer from the 90s too? I just checked its not...i'm nominating that.

The Definitive 3:

Lethal Weapon
Die Hard
Raiders of the Lost Arc

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade
Die Hard

Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
Predator

Wow, this one was easy.:)

name your favourite 3 action movies of the 80's
lol - sorry hunter. I guess I skipped over that when I was scanning the thread. Of the ones I mentioned, these are my top 3:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Beverly Hills Cop II
Die Hard

Star Wars is space opera. You can't say that's Action, mang.

Dude, thats not really an action film. It's a sci-fi/fantasy.

Sure, Empire is action. It's an adventure narrative and the conflicts are resolved by action scenes. Look at all the set-pieces; huge snow battle against the At-At walkers, the snowbeast thing, various space battles, big climactic shoot-out and Luke fighting Vader.

I don't count the Star Wars movies as action. They have action, but are not really action movies in the sense of a true action movie.

Indy and Die Hard have enough votes without me:
Road Warrior
Escape From New York
First Blood

Sure they are. There is no such thing as a 'true action movie'. Every action movie is also part of another genre(s). Die Hard is a crime thriller. Face/Off is a sci/fi thriller. Once Upon A Time in the West is a western.

If you're talking '80's action movies' as a specific type of movie that rose to prominence in that decade - the one-man army movie - then I agree Star Wars does not fit.

Me likey!

Die Hard
Raiders
Road Warrior

There's a whole set of genres there that are definitely implied by "Action movie": one man army movie, the buddy cop movie, under siege movies, caper movies, most thrillers. Action and action scenes are common to many movies, they're not by themselves indicative of "action movies".

It's certainly not a concrete term, or even a genre in and of itself, and you definitely have some dubious things like crime movies, westerns, and war movies, but there is certainly a common understanding of what kinds of movies are "action movies" IMO.

- Die Hard
- Predator
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Aliens was so close.

If were not allowing Aliens or Empire Strikes Back then WHY are we allowing Predator?

I say Aliens yes, ESB no, Predator yes.

Aliens is sci-fi/action just like Alien is sci-fi/horror. Because it takes place in a spaceship, nobody considers it a horror film, but it very much is. As for Aliens, some (including I) would say would consider it an action film because it seriously was an action film with alot of sci-fi elements. James Cameron turned the sequel to one of the greatest horror films of all-time into one of the best action films of all-time, let alone one of the best sequels. Why Aliens is not considered an action film while T2 is confuses me a bit, because they are exactly the same in genre.

As for The Empire Strikes Back, most (including I, before reading Kevin Roegele's posts) would consider that film a fantasy film, but that is a double standard. Action is action, explosions are explosions, and so on. Kevin Roegele pointed out that Empire is very much an action film. It's just not widely considered one, not really the "typical" action film, or being the first film to come to mind (ala Die Hard, Predator, Rambo, Mad Max, and so on).

Btw, I'm glad to see alot of people listing The Road Warrior.

Die Hard
