I saw hobgob11 create a thread for one of my most beloved childhood film series, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

So I just figured to do the same for another of my favorites.

Discuss the 1987, 1990 and 1993 theatrical films that shape the "Robocop" Trilogy.

I'll have my ideas up later...

Here's also a little something for fellow Robocop Fans:

I loved the first one.

Anyone remember the old Robocop Cartoon?

The first one is simply amazing and if you don't own it yet, you should look for the 20th Anniversary edition they put out recently. I don't know how many times I've watched it since I bought it.

The original Robocop is one of the best movies to come out of the 1980s.

I've got the hard to find Criterion version of Robocop DVD. Unfortunately, it is NOT anamorphic and I just bought a widescreen HDTV.

I watched the first one two years ago for the first time from beginning to end and wow, the movie still holds up quite well!

Let's not forget the classic team of Bad guys we got with Robocop.

These guy's were great.

I'LL BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!!!!

Loved this movie...still a great movie even after all these years. The second one was OK, and I blocked out the third one.

Not to mention it had some kickass theme music.

when That '70s Show first premiered I found it difficult to believe Kurtwood Smith as a suburban dad because he was so ingrained in my mind as Clarence Boddicker.

Ohhhh...I had that same problem for a long time!

I like Robocop 1, but the sequels suck. The only redeeming thing about Robocop 2 were well executed fight scenes and a nice score by Leonardo Rosenman (spelling on last name?). Robocop 3 was just straight up trash.

The first one is completely awesome

the second one is so bad it's good

the third is just horrid

The first one was great. The sequels, meh. I think Orion or whoever the studio was thought they had a money machine on their hands but didn't really know how to keep it going properly; there's increased pandering in 2 and 3 with the introduction of whiz-kid characters and the obligatory killer robot for Murphy to fight. That balance between the acidically-macabre sense of humor and the brief glimmers of raw human elements that made the first film as good as it is IMO is absent from the later films, and it shows. Weller's performance during the scene where he takes his helmet off still gets to me. Plus, Kurtwood Smith was just a great villain, equally funny and sick, and not one of the tired old 'corrupt businessmen trying to control Robocop' that they kept rehashing in the later films.

The third film at least had the sense to restore Basil Pouldouris' score from the first film, and even had the guts to kill of a major character up to this point, but c'mon...you can actually SEE the wires on Murphy's jet pack. In fact, why the f*** does he even HAVE a jet pack?!?

Cause the kids will think it's an awesome toy. :(

Did anyone ever read Frank Miller's original treatments for both 2 and 3? How much better was it (I'd like to think it couldn't be any worse.)?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. They kept trying to make Robocop a kid-friendly franchise and it was simply was never meant to be that way.

I havent, but I read at the time the studio felt Frank's Robocop 2 was unfilmable. Even though it kept many of the same elements of the original. Still havent read the comic book version of 2, but I've been meaning to.

i liked the first and i think the second is good , the third had a good story but was executed poorly mainly because of a little girl and her super computer that is completely amazing but none of the adults seem to notice this .i never saw the tv show but i saw a trailer on you tube and so i definately wont be watching that , i also bought all the prime directives off of amazon , i watched the first two they are ok if your desperate enough

i read that frank miller wrote a script that would transfer to thirty hours of movie time

Anyone know if Miller's treatments for 2 and 3 are online?

And yes, Robocop rocks out with it's c**k out.

I'm curious is the new DVD's features worth the purchase? Since I already own the trilogy pack. I really do want more special features.

But I love the first one, and I really enjoy the second one, but I hate the third one. Burke could never really get the movements right, and his arm placements annoyed me for some reason. He looked like he had a body and arm casts on. Plus the story was lame, and the direction was horrible.

For those who don't know about this site, you can fill your heart's Robo Desires here:

www.robocoparchive.com

I'm a member of that site as well, and it's got everything you could ever need on the franchise (Films/TV Series/Prime Directives/Comics/Video Games/Cartoons/Merchandising) It's also got a message board of its own specifically for the Robocop films.

The site even includes the back story behind Robocop creators Ed Neumier and Michael Miner's original idea for "Robocop 2" before Orion went to Frank Miller.

definately worth checking out if you're a Robo fan ;)
