A new iPod...

What do you think of that design?

  • Awesome design! The digital scroll wheel is a great move!

  • Horrible design! I don't want to have to touch the screen!

  • No opinion...

So far no new wide-screen iPods amongst the iPod upgrades announced.

What's the point of buying a new one if a newer one is going to come out in a year?

Wouldn't that logic apply to anything you'd buy, then? Clothes. Cars. Houses. Furniture. TV's. Anytime you buy anything at all, it's immediately obsolete for all intents and purposes. If you want or need it now, get it now. I've never understood people who wait for months upon months on end for a new model of something when they really could be using it right away if they got the current model. If you KNOW there will be upgrades in the near future, it's maybe okay to wait a little bit, but there's no guarantees with any company, let alone one that doesn't publish it's vintage chart or model timeline like Apple.

That was my "glass is half empty" moment.

No Widescreen iPod :down

I'd like to see one too, but Apple's never even hinted that they might be making one. It's something people have been doing mock-ups of and clamoring for, but no one ever promised they'd release one at all let alone today. At any rate, the event isn't over. Who knows what Job will whip out in his "One more thing..." moment.

Start with the question "What are you going to use it for?". Outdoor activities? Running? Just listening to music on the train? Providing a soundtrack to your giant lesbian orgies?

All the above

Then get the 8GB black Nano, as it's based on flash memory and won't get damaged during running and other activities like the hard drive based models might. And get a silicone case for it to protect it from bodily fluids that might get splashed on it during your all-girl re-enactments of "Caligula".

10:53AM - We've now got ... all sorts of great digital content on the itunes store. And you can take that content and download it to your computer. It can be a Mac or a PC -- I'm going to use a mac because i'm biased - and you can sync it to your ipod. But what about that big flat-panel TV you bought last weekend? Well, you need a box to drive that screen...

But how is this box gonna talk to the computer? Do I want to string cables through the house? I'm gonna talk to it through a wireless network. That's gonna get my content from the computer to the box on the TV. Now let's talk about that missing piece.

10:54AM - It looks like this [a flatter Mini] it's called iTV. That's a codeword. we need to come up with a better name.

10:55AM - No power brick
802.11
USB2
Ehternet
HDMI connector for all new big-screen flat panel TVs
Component video (RGB)
analog audio RCA jacks
Optical audio
Controled with the familiar white remote
Hooks directly to your screen or to your set-top box as another input, or to your receiver.

The rumor sites have been speculating about this thing for freakin' EVER. Very cool to see that it finally came to pass. It won't be available 'til next year, but this has been sort of the holy grail for people who want to fully integrate their computers with their home A/V systems. Apple could absolutely take over the much sought after living room space with this unit and the enhancements they've made to iTunes with the movies and such.
