would to have been to have Lex out of prison and BUILD LEXCORPS very much like the TAS... they should have borrowed elements from TAS Last Son of Krypton in that Lex owns half the city now after so long and develops complex high tech advanced military weapons and mechanized weapons to sell to the Dept of Defense and unveils some secret prototypes mech warrior robot type suits (much like the Last son of krypton animated movie) which eventually get TAKEN and stolen by hired thugs by Lex so that he can have even more money and develop plans for even larger more deadly robots and make even more millions from the sales of them to the Military.
THIS would've been a FAR better way to go cuz not only would Superman return to safe the airplane, and perhaps show a few others (like a montage sequence of him saving the world) but when it comes to Metropolis, as CLARK The journalist manages to find out about Lex's plans and then as Superman has to try to duke it out with these prototype suits that the goons wear in order to safekeep the merchandise. This would have been a totally kick ass battle in that way with Supes vs massive powered enemies developed by Human genius in the form of Lex... rather than some land continent scheme that really makes no sense at the end of the day.
After Supes manages to stop the robots, he pays a vist to LEX EXACTLY like the ending shots of STAS LSOK - where he's standing outside the window and Lex says you can't touch me now Superman... You've been gone for so long, I own half the city, you have no idea of the kind of power I have.
Then Superman simply says, i'll be watching you (cuz you KNOW he can't do anything at all legally) and flies away, so it would be a bittersweet triumph.
In the mean time as a brilliant ending, we could have had Lex tap a button his desk and reveal a large monitor display in front of him where he could be communicating with Braniac letting him know that Superman has returned or SOMETHING like this to make it sequelistic... if not leave off this ending bit and just have it end with Superman flying away meaning there will be more clashes between them in future films
This plot to me comes across FAR FAR better than the film we have now. Superman Returns should have had this fusion storyline and borrowed heavily from the LSOK series but put it in a RETURNS context if you see what I mean...it would've been so much better
