I think this deserves its own topic.

I think an entire Returns storyline could've been so well done if it had been purposely spread over a two film or 3 film arc, hear me out here.

Superman Returns general plot - You have the whole Superman returns from a dead Krypton and crashes in Smallville and after he finally gets back to being "Metropolis Clark" he finds out that nearly half the city is owned by Lex Luthor. Luthor has set up LexCorps, a mega industrial and high tech weapons research and sales consortium that sells weapons to everyone from the Pentagon to other defense ministries of other countries (WITHOUT the Pentagon's knowledge).
- The story of the ANIMATED STAS Last Son of Krypton should've been used in this part where Lex has been developing highly advanced Mech Robo suits to sell to the Pentagon, but then purposely orchestrates a heist by a bunch of fake criminals who "steals" these Huge Robo suits such that LexCorps can gain compensation and even work on MORE advanced suits --> Far greater CASH and Lex can build his own private Army
- Clark TO PROVE HE is still worthy of being a journalist for the Daily Planet (instead of simply getting his job back so easily after 5 years which was stupid), he investigates Lex and finds out this entire plot, and as SUPERMAN MAKES HIS RETURN AFTER 5 years and Stops the criminals and a massive action scene ensues where he fights against these huge Robots and Mech suits and foils Lex's plot. Lex gets angry and at the end of the movie, we see him actually managed to make CONTACT WITH BRANIAC saying Kal-El has returned... time to jump to the next phase.
- Braniac anticipating Superman's return prompts Luthor to take whatever crystals he stole from the Fortress of Solitude and CREATE NEW KRYPTON then for Braniac to inhabit with Lex at his side and from New Krypton, new huge enemies can be created or BIO ENGINEERED from Kryptonian rock! --> DOOMSDAY END OF FILM

The Sequel - could then focus very much on Superman trying to Stop New Krypton but has to fight Doomsday, Braniac and Lex's private high tech mechanized army... it would be non-stop action and a huge amount of story to cover but it would be terrific, I wouldn't have Superman die but he just barely survives after managing to defeat Doomsday AND braniac and all of Lex's forces as well.

This would've been so so so so kick ass in my opinion... What's your take?

I agree, except for Doomsday.

Doomsday is a third act villain, or a third film villain. He is a villain of such power, that he should be battled near the end of the franchise, not the middle. He is much like Darksied in that respect. They are two villains that should be used for a climactic end to a franchise. (a starwars metaphor to illustrate: If Luke had fought the emperor in Empire Strikes Back, instead of Vader, there would be no where for the third film, Jedi, to go). So just as in this example, Doomsday and Darkseid are villains for the finale of the franchise.

I feel the first sequel is not enough film time to merit the use of either doomsday or darkseid (they should be saved for a third or fourth movie). Brainiac I would love to see in a sequel.

cool yeah in retrospect I agree with where you're coming from, you're right about Doomsday and Darkseid being used as 3rd film villains

but I just feel New Krypton and saying fighting Braniac's engineered army from this poisonous Kryptonian rock alongside Lex's mechanized advanced military army/robots would be such a kick ass thing for a sequel.

I really like this idea a lot. Could have been awesome. Except I would have had Brainiac be a computer virus/alien intelligence that infects Superman's ship while he is inspecting the Krypton rubble. And Superman unknowingly brings Brainiac to earth and then Brainiac seeks out Lex Luthor because he has the most advanced technology and is in the greatest position to take over the planet and destroy Superman. I figured that would be kind of a no-brainer.

I like you're idea.
However i would've made the scenes with Lex and Supes going away more important. How is it that Lex Luthor gained soo much power ???
When i saw SR , i saw really alot of wasted potential in that movie.

I would've very much liked the idea that Lex used the absence of Superman to gain power in MEtropolis. And not Lois , but Lex is the one who's going on and on about "Why the world doesn't need superman".
Imagine that scene where Lex says to Kitty the whole Prometheus thing and about gods with red capes. Imagine Lex saying that to a huge crowd .
As we hear those words going on and on , we go to the Alex Ross shot of SR where the camero zooms to superman in space. Listening to the whole world and hearing lex talking like that . Some people cheer. Some don't .
Superman standing on the edge of space , having to make a choice of either going away for good or staying on earth.
And just then he hears the words "HELP ME SUPERMAN".
It is at that moment that he opens his eyes , realises that the earth will also need him , regalrdless of how many Lex Luthors will come and go , and then blasts towards earth a la that SR shot.

It would make the connection that more powerful.
And also i agree that Doomsday is a villain that really is just for action. He's a brute , has no storyline nor character development. He should just be reserved for the final fight in a movie.

no it wouldn't cost 400 million dollars to do at all

I don't know why people say this, i mean the entire lord of the rings trilogy had a budget cap of 270 million dollars. All this sort of money was spent by Singer on ONE BLOODY FILM and it had no where NEAR the level of special effects or number of them that Superman had.

It can be done, and smartly done... it's a matter of spending it right, and with the kind of money they had, at 200 million... this film could've been made...

Bryan tends to waste money on pre-production set-up..

In X2, they spent a massive amount shipping in dinosaur bones and other exhibits for the museum sequence at the beginning... then the sequence was trimmed down so that most of the exhibits they imported weren't even seen. A colossal waste of money.

Similarly, in SR, the Krypton exploration sequence cost $10 million, only to be cut, and Singer reckons it will not be on the DVD either. Another waste.

And yet his first superhero movie, X1, holds together pretty well with a tiny budget of about $70million.

Good stuff can be done with limited cash. Too much money and freedom was given to the makers of SR and you can see it in the end-product which is loose and flabby and needs a lot of tightening up.

There is NOTHING kick ass about this storyline in any way. Two underperforming and money wasting Superman movies would do no good except for maybe burrying any future hopes for a good movie.

first ever 400 Million dollar movie.

With Bryan Singer or Brett Ratner at the helm it certainly would cost that... if they have a common quality that is that of filling their budgets like balloons. And Kerry Conran making the most Superman-ish movie ever made full with A-list actors and kick ass CGI for less than 100 million... God bless Sky Captain...

See what I mean one poster at the Hype has far greater potential than those rediculous wirters for SR. That plots sounds really good and twice better than the plot SR had.

Yes but for everyone person who'll probably jump and scream YAY that a 200 million dollar superman movie is made using just blue screen sets , you'd probably have 100 people whining about how George Lucas rapes their childhood with the SW way of shooting every'thing in blue screen.

While i fully agree that the main reason why these movies cost so much is due to the expensive sets being designed and used for lots of shooting ( Daily Planet) and for little shooting ( Kent Farm) , i still think that if studios didn't immediatly set a deadline for a particular movie to be released , the budget can be 200 million and still a quality movie can be made. Just give movies time , even if they take upwards of three years to complete the VFX.

Otherwise just make a 200 million dollar a la Sky Captain/SW/Sin City and spend virtually the entire budget on VFX.

I think we will see New Krypton again in this franchise anyway, who knows were they will take the sequel, but i for one, look forward to finding out.

This franchise is DEAD. It's not coming back...

On second thought, did it ever have a pulse to begin with?

Do you know that for a fact, or are you just saying it because YOU didnt like the movie?

I know I got your point with your first post, no need to post again, go away.

ya,I cant wait to see where N.K. takes the sequel.so many possibilities...

So, um....where are there characters in there? I just see a lot of moving, fighting parts.

This is the thing that nearly all these "genius" fan ideas forget:

Character. What's Superman's emotional journey? Getting over the waste of metal he makes after trashing Luthor's mech-baddies? Where's his challenge? Not to mention the huge time jump you have and plot convience in having Luthor just "contact" Brainiac and instantly know how to use him. I mean, if you HAD to use your general idea and had to put more mindless action in, you'd probably want to make it mean something more than a Visual FX house and Sound FX team.

Say...

Superman returns from a dead Krypton, a scene that is shown and in it, Superman wonders how Krypton did not see it all coming; he returns to find the world utterly changed. Crime is rampant, Metropolis resemebles Gotham City more than its former self. Lois Lane has moved on, with child and fiancee and is quite angry at Superman's return.

Lex Luthor is a privateer, a philantropist, a highly touted figure in Metropolis, but by no means the cliche Donald Trump knock-off defense arms manufacturer which we've seen in about ten thousand other movies (including Spider-Man 1 and 2, Fantastic Four, and to a certain degree Batman Begins a la the microwave emitter). He's simply wealthy, having swindled most of his funs from shady means, and highly intelligent, a respected academic and scientist. A pinnacle of what mankind can be really in many ways.

Luthor, enraged by Superman's return as he stops a plummeting plane, begins with a team of scientists to dissect technology (crystals and its hub) stolen from Superman's fortress. Luthor discovers the core intelligence of Krypton, an entity called Vrill Dox (let us spare the Brainiac terminology please). This intelligence does not talk, it does not communicate. At best, think of it like Hal from Space Oddessy -- an intelligent computer program rearranging crystals, offering data specs, ideas, etc. But in such a way as to have a sort of creepy, passive personality.

From it, Luthor decides to create a world without a Superman, free of the interdependence that Superman brings to humankind. Vrill Dox's original program insists on Krypton's heritage being protected, at all costs. The movie can play out much like Singer's: Lois investigating, kidnapped, etc. You could have Vrill Dox in fact sense that Jason is Superman's child, and perhaps even in a way somehow protect him (since that is its directive), instead of having Jason kill Lois's attacker. This could play nicely into a triangle, with Vrill Dox going to kill Superman since he's attempting to obstruct the integration of Krypton into Earth, which threatens to destroy all of Earth. The one point I'll concede is making the threat of New Krypton more dynaimc and much more worldwide.

I'd keep New Krypton looking dead, and as it continues to grow, show it shedding into ordinary crystal formations, growing itself, forming itself into something deadly. I'd still have Luthor beat Superman, as well as his goons.

And have the film end the same way.

That would at least be palatable in terms of a film. I mean, many forget that without character, you do not have a plot -- you have a series of events. Without a plot, you have no movie. Period.

Fans here can rewrite their favorite Superman: The Animated Series scene into whatever overall comic book storyline cliche they want as many times as they want, but unless it has soul and character, all you've done is plagarized someone else's work and tried to make yourself look smart doing it.

If u really want a Kryptonian arc I suggest Zod....

^ No i dont want Zod, we have seen him before, but i definately think NK will have a part to play in the sequel.

I think, maybe that brainiac will be formed from the crystals that kitty threw out of the copter.N.K. is still growing,so maybe it fuses with the knowledge crystals somehow, and dont forget the 3 dead henchmen still laying there as well...

Sorry but i find that reasonign faulty, we have seen The Joker in a Batman movie and are gonna see him again.....

its gonna be awesome. It could be Brainiac,or Doomsday,or even so form of bizarro,I say bizarro because when lex stabbed supes on N.K. their is prolly some blood left, and who knows how the crystals will react with his blood.

I am not sure how Superman fighting mechanized robot makes for a good Superman movie. You don't have him fighting a supervillian in the 1st movie either, which is what eventually hurt Returns.

Using Singer's story the best opportunity for a villian would have been to use Zod in Returns. This would have worked. Then they could have moved on to Brainiac for a sequel with Metallo or Bizzaro to follow up.
