Using Singer's story the best opportunity for a villian would have been to use Zod in Returns. This would have worked. Then they could have moved on to Brainiac for a sequel with Metallo or Bizzaro to follow up.

My point is that if they wanted to use Zod, Returns would have been the one to do it. They didn't do it, so there should be no Zod. Zod would have provided the supervillian the fighting action that the box office seemed to yearn for. It would have probably boosted it to around 220million. That is better than below 200million.
