It has become tiresome that every other post in The Legend of Chun Li thread is about Ryu. The Legend of Chun Li is called that because it is a movie about Chun Li and her origin, and mission to take down Bison. That thread should be used to discuss the casting, director, pics etc. pertaining to that film.

This thread is for the free discussion of casting and story ideas of what you'd like to see in a movie about Ryu or any other Street Fighter.

I look forward to seeing casting choices as well as reading any potential movie ideas you all have

Enjoy.

Alright. What do you guys think about a Street Fighter world tour movie starring Ryu and Ken? Of course it would be a revenge story with both characters in search of Akuma but I'd like to see some fights with Blanka, Zangief, and Sagat along the way. Maybe even have Sakura tag along.

I think this would be the truest way of doing things as well as a good excuse for cameos, galore.

Ok, moving the talk over here.

For Akuma I like this design. I'd probably lose that hair extention or whatever it's called and just have it messy/spikey. Brownish/red for the hair.

Maybe as an added detail ropes around his fists.

I'd prefer a Movie about an underground tournament first, with a 2nd and last attempt to stop Bison. It's just whenever I think of a Street Fighter movie, I think of Bloodsport. Two fighters in a ring and only one is going to be left standing.

After the tournament has been done, future movies could concentrate on other aspects of the Street Fighter history. Akuma would be good, but how deep should the movie venture into the Street Fighter lore? Should it incorporate the Dark Hadou? How mystical is it going to be? I don't want Hadoukens exploding on the screen every couple seconds.

I think a good story can be made around the subject of the energy being difficult to control and the possibility of it corrupting the user. The whole ancient secret angle.

I'm not sure how far a tournament can go though. Would Sagat be the main villain with Adon being kind of his underling?

thanks lobo for creating this thread

It's probably difficult to find a right balance for a SF Movie. I want it serious in the direction of Bloodsport or those Tony Jaa Movies with impressive displays of martial arts. But I also want a certain tone for the Movie so seeing someone like Ryu shooting an energy ball doesn't seem too crazy.

I'd also like to have people question what they just saw. Not just accept it as if it's an everyday thing. The Legend of Chun Li will have a little of the super natural element with Bison, if they didn't change the script, I'm looking foward to see how well that plays out.

The tournament should be a means to get to Bison. So he should still be the main villain. With Balrog, Vega and Sagat as secondary villains, just like the games. But I'd put the main focus of the 3 on Sagat and play on his rivalry with Ryu. I like the whole angle of Sagat trying to regain his honor in a rematch.

As for how the whole thing would play out, I like the Manga done by Masaomi Kanzaki. Which in 1993 got released as regular colored comics.

Of course changes would have to be made. Here's a plot summary.

Sometime during the late '70s or early '80s, an island known as Shad is urbanized with funding from several major conglomerates around the world, effectively becoming a small state with areas largely similar to Tokyo, New York City, and Las Vegas. The intention was for the new island to be a key part of an expected new global economy, but following a stock market disaster, the completed Shad is abandoned and falls into a state of anarchy around the mid-eighties—until a powerful criminal syndicate run by M. Bison arrives and takes control. Bison gains popularity among Shad's citizens as its chief of police, while keeping his organization and its activities under the radar.

At the same time, two martial-arts students named Ryu and Ken have begun training with the reluctant and mysterious legend Gouken. One night, Ken's friend Cho appears at the dojo in a panic, revealing that he's learned of Bison's organization, Shadowlaw, and its current agenda—vicious human experiments revolving around a drug called Doll which effectively brainwashes people, usually for acts of violence. Cho has been followed and falls victim to an attack by Bison and two of his lords of Shadowlaw, Vega and Sagat. Naturally, a fight ensues, during which the groups of combatants become separated. After making his way back to the dojo, Ryu finds that Gouken has been left for dead by Bison, and hears his master's final words. Assuming the missing Ken to be dead also, Ryu becomes a lonesome vagabond.

Years later, Doll has had an effect on the lives of a soldier named Guile and an Interpol officer named Chun-Li—who have arrived on Shad and entered its martial-arts tournament in respective efforts to investigate Shadowlaw and reach Bison, who has become the tournament's champion. Ryu, now a more capable fighter, has also emerged on Shad and entered the tournament, while befriending Cho's old girlfriend Po-Lin and her little brother Wong-Mei.

As the fighting progresses over the course of a few days, Ryu, Guile, and Chun-Li advance, facing opponents such as Blanka, Honda, Dhalsim, and Zangief—some of whom have personal goals of their own. Ryu and Chun-Li form a loose affinity, and following a moment in which Chun-Li suddenly comes across Po-Lin with Ryu and appears jealous, Ryu sees a picture in the paper of an upcoming participant in the tournament—and from there realizes that Ken is indeed alive (though now secretly a victim of Doll himself and used by Shadowlaw). At the tournament, Chun-Li and Guile begin losing to Vega and Sagat, with Guile still not fully recovered from his match with Zangief, and Chun-Li partly hindered by rage. During the battles, an emotionally conflicted Ken starts to snap out of Doll's influence. Eventually, a weary Chun-Li begins to recall the advice she's received from her father and Ryu respectively, regains control of herself, and surprises Vega with a powerful Kikoken a moment before he can land the finishing strike, knocking him out—only to fall herself soon afterwards.

Guile, meanwhile, is still faring poorly against Sagat, before being saved by intervention from none other than Ken, who's regained his senses. While the new fight plays out, Guile and Chun-Li lay nearly unconscious in the backroom infirmary, only to be approached by a henchman of Bison's sent to finish them off. But before he can complete his attack, he is blasted into a wall and knocked senseless by a Hadouken, and a still-weary Chun-Li reaches out upon looking up and noticing that Ryu has arrived.

After overcoming Sagat, Ken is set to fight in the next day's final match, but soon confronts Bison backstage in a hallway, seeking to take his anger out on him immediately. He is stopped, however, by Ryu, whom Ken is relieved to find alive. However Bison uses his power to control Ken via Doll again and orders him to fight Ryu. The fight stops when Ryu ceases fighting and tells Ken to resist Doll and Bisons orders. Ken has a flashback of his years under Gouken with Ryu and snaps out of it in the middle of a Shoryuuken. He manages to turn the attack away from Ryu and smashes his hand into a wall. With his hand broken, Ken asks Ryu to take his place in the tournament's finale against Bison.

Ryu agrees, and after an emotional battle witnessed by many, including notable Street Fighters and several of the people who have been affected by Shadowlaw over the years, Ryu emerges victorious. As it ends, a jump forward at some point in the future reveals that many of the friends and participants have parted ways or begun doing so. A narrative by Chun-Li implies that both Doll's time and Shadowlaw's control over Shad have passed. Ryu departs once more, leaving Ken, Po-Lin, and Wong-Mei as he sets off on a journey with the highly characteristic final line, "I'm just looking for someone who's stronger than I am."

Trying to find the Issues again, I discovered that Udon Comics have re-translated and released the 3 Manga Volumes again. So if you're interested in it you have another chance to read it.

Here's a small preview of Volume 1.

Came across a cool looking Fan Trailer on youtube.

well, they have had all the tools available to make a great Street Fighter film for decades now.

It should be a mix of Bloodsport, ong bak, like the above poster said, and maybe throw in a bit of "big trouble in litle china" style for the fantasy element.

Imagine a tony jaa street fighter film.
It would make people wet themselves like never before!

Ah, you made that? Who is that guy you used for the first shot of Bison? I'm sure I've seen him somewhere before. But I can't remember.

Yeah, that was all my creation. :) First time I ever tried one of those manip trailers, just for an exercise.

The first Bison shot is taking the footage from the Street Fighter movie, and mixing it with a shot of Michael Ironside from Total Recall.

for once i wish they'd make a serious enough attempt to make a Street Fighter movie. look at what they are able to do with Resident Evil and Doom, heck even Mortal Kombat showed how it can be done.

A SF2 movie based off the Masaomi Kanzaki manga would be great, I think it already has the right tone and it could be greatly adapted to film, actually I always dreamed of they doing an anime adaptation of that manga, I´m a ig fan of that particular piece of SF related work.

The SF animated film from 1995 is pretty good, and changed the arcade games forever.

I don't know, though. I'm a really big SF fan (I've been playing the series since 1987, when SF 1 had the two big pressure-sensitive buttons you slam your fists into), and I think the series has more or less run its course. Another animated film would be cool, if they include the likes of Yun and Yang, and most of the rest of the SF 3 cast, but really, do we need to see them in live action? The SF story feels like such an afterthought, to be honest.

It's kind of amazing that we have 2 live-action Street Fighter movies and none of them are centered on Ryu and Ken.

So, since The Legend of Chun Li is obviously set to fail as a Street Fighter Movie and doesn't even seem to set foot into the category of ok martial arts movies, I guess it might be more productive talking about future Street Fighter Movies. Though it might probably take another 15 years or so till they make one.

The Legend of Chun Li did some glaring mistakes that must not be repeated in other Street Fighter Movies. Like barely having any good martial artists, other than Robin Shou and whoever is playing Chun Li's father. In a Movie that's called Street Fighter that's definitely not enough. The director who gave us Cradle 2 the Grave. Actors who barely, or don't resemble the characters they are playing at all. Letting another rapper grace the screen.

So let's continue talking new Street Fighter Movie. First, I think we should start with what the feel of the Movie should be like. Something dead serious and grounded like Sha Po Lang? A little over the top like Ip Man? Or should it pull out all the stops, screw realism, give us anime fights like we see them in the latest Street Fighter IV Intro, with a stylized world, like Goemon?

About actors: I think they should scout complete new blood. People that can actually fight. I rather have martial artists just learning to act, than actors, in case of "The Legend of Chun Li" mostly bad actors, that try to fight convincingly. And pick someone that looks the part.

The director: Street Fighter needs to be a Hong Kong production. I feel it's the only way to do the franchise justice. Any director of the movies I mentioned would be a good pick I think.

Your thoughts?

i agree with the anime style fights in a styleized word idea

I really like the ink style that Street Fighter IV uses. Something similar on the big screen, with live actors would look totally stunning. But would they deem Street Fighter worth the effort?

Ryu's theme in SF 4 was friggin epic. I'd wish they'd actually realize that the series main protagonist is Ryu dammit !!!

I know Daniel Henney is korean but he could be Ryu. He's Agent Zero in Wolverine's new movie.
