A Very Corpulent Bought/Thought Thread for 09/22/10 - SPOILERS!

Uggg...It's "clean hamster cage" day. So, what do I do? THOUGHTS!

Secret Avengers #5

The secret of Nick Fury is revealed...or, should I say "Max."

I liked this issue much better than the previous ones. Of course, we get another comic with a whole lot of talking and backstory; but, at least it kept me entertained. My only critical thought would be why has Max not been seen for five years, and suddenly he has to take down the Secret Avengers. (And, that also means they aren't that Secret.) :yay:

Superman/Batman #76

This is what I get! I ask my LCS to put S/B #75 in my box last month, and now they added the whole title to my pull list. I let them know to take me back off, as this book really doesn't interest me; but, I went ahead and picked up this one-off story anyway. All I can say is at least I only paid three bucks for it.

Kind of "little too late," we get a fill-in story showing Superman's reaction to Bruce's death during Final Crisis and his feeling toward Dick taking over the reigns of Batman. I felt it was a waste of time to read this sentimental story, especially since Bruce should be returning very, very soon. It just reinforces why I don't buy this title, unless I find old issues in a 50 cent or cheaper sale bin.

Avengers #5

Another "whole lotta talk, not much action" Marvel comic. Everything is finally explained...it is pretty interesting...and, I always love to see what a writer is going to do with Ultron next. Thing is...we only really got 21 pages of story with a BUNCH of ads mixed in to make it seem bigger than it actually is. (Plus, is anyone reading the backup "Oral History" of the Avengers? I sure am not.) I don't mind the higher price when we get more pages of story; but, this issue really didn't give us that much. :yay: for the story, but a :csad: for the rip-off.

Black Widow #6

Another good issue that gives the reader a good amount of dialogue, intrigue, and action. I'll miss this book when it's eventually cancelled; but, for now, I'll enjoy the ride. :yay:

I think it's safe to say that Spidey is a Ghostbusters fan. He's quoted/references them more than any other Marvel character in the last 5 years. And it seems like Thing is a closet fanboy too. (Of course I'm talking last week's New Avengers).

Why not? Heck, back in the 70's, it was revealed that Parker was a Trekkie (he and his pals waited in a long line for "STAR TREK - THE MOVIE". I bet he'd have rather fought the Lizard).

I meant the first one from the 70's, not the newer J.J. Abrams one. It was a flop and many people at the time didn't like it. For many, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN was the first "official" Trek film.

Those people are stupid because, while Wrath of Khan was indeed a good movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was also good. It just erred more toward the "City on the Edge of Forever" side of the sci fi spectrum than the actiony side. :o

Four final reviews for the week.

Ultimate Mystery #3

Two Bendis Ultimate titles this week, and this issue is just a mess. Bendis has finally made Spider-Woman uninteresting with getting her involved with Roxxon Industries, where as in the previous mini she was the highlight of the book and a character I wanted to read a lot more of. The main villian is extremely uninteresting ... and rather generic looking. And, the conclusion..showing the return of Reed...didn't surprise me at all. At least we have a little twist by seeing he's possibly in league with the enemy.

Ultimate Spider-Man #14

Thankfully, Bendis does a decent job normally on USM. This issue wraps up the Chameleon storyline; and, while it was good, it was also nothing spectacular. I could have done without a sister-Chameleon, ESPECIALLY when I saw her with Peter's head on her female body. Naturally, JJJ isn't dead...but, the ending with him speaking Parker's name from his hospital bed was nice.

Whereas I love some good action in my comics, Ultimate Spider-Man is best when it's more like Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. It's the relationships that make this book good, not the conclusions to storylines where the action takes center stage. It's also not helped...as I say each week...that the artist takes the enjoyment of the book down a big notch.

I'm looking forward to next issue, simply because we'll get more about Peter's personal life and not very much action.:yay:

Hit Monkey #3

I really enjoyed this mini a whole lot. Daniel Way has made me finally interested in an ape/monkey character! Stemming off the events from the Hit Monkey one-shot that introduced this character, we see how the monkey finally decides to embrace his destiny, as he takes on Bullseye for a final time. I'm SO onboard for another mini to follow soon after this one. :yay:

Dracula: The Company Of Monsters #2

Boom! Studios is really impressing me with the products they are putting out. While the X-Men's Dracula is getting all the spotlight, Busiek's has done a real fine job in just two issues. Whereas the first issue focused on setting up the main characters, this issue deals with Dracula's resurrection. The story isn't being drawn out, but actually moves at a pretty fast pace. I can't wait for the next issue, and I dare say that I'm looking forward to this next issue more than the next issue of Curse Of The Mutants. :yay::yay:

Deadpool Team-up

Jeff Parker writes an issue of Deadpool Team-Up. Any guess who would guest star in this book? Yeah, not too hard to figure out Parker would use this as ANOTHER opportunity to promote the Agents of Atlas. It's Gorilla Man, and while the story is a bit cute, it's also quickly forgetable. I think it's time that Marvel cancels this title. The sales figures must just keep plummeting...especially since the majority of team-ups have been with Marvel B-listers...at best!:yay:

Avengers #5

(Plus, is anyone reading the backup "Oral History" of the Avengers? I sure am not.)

Yeah, I've been reading them. I like 'em. They kinda come off as a DVD commentary with everyone chiming in as to how the Avengers began and taking us through their rich history, and I like hearing all the characters' different perspectives. It's interesting.

Besides, if you paid for the book you might as well read the damn thing.

I can't bring myself to read those. I tried in issue one and got bored within the first page.
