ABC's "No Ordinary Family"

I have this idea that JJ will get a superiority complex out of it in the future. That's just the way I feel the character heading on the show.

I keep getting this sense that he'll eventually realize how far beyond everyone else he is and start playing Machiavellian games, manipulating people for what he perceives as the greater good.
Ooooo JJ heel turn...I would like... it would make sense with his built up agnst with his parents only really caring for him once he got his powers... I could dig it

So with JJ's Super Genuis powers did it also upgrade his brain's memory becuase he seems to remember a lot quickly

Isn't his power related solely to math?

I may have missed it but what has he done besides that.

For my part it was ludicrous. How does his enhanced brain grant him the arm strength or physical stature necessary to play quarterback? Why would he even want to play football?

Now pool or billiards that would be cool and sensible. It would demonstrate his power without straining believability.

He memorized a bunch of jewish stuff to impress a chick he thought was a jew.

You make a good point about his strength but it's a show about a family who falls in water and gets super powers. If you're looking for plausibility you're really barking up the wrong tree

He learned Hebrew in a matter of seconds and the football coach was also his history teacher. He got an A on his test to get his try-out on the football team.

Respectfully disagree.........the application of the powers must be plausible to suspend dis-belief.

I thought the football stuff was a reach too. Heightened brain activity isn't going to help him read coverage, throw a proper fade route or survive a hit from a blitzing linebacker. Echoing what afan said, something like billiards, where there's some application of spatial awareness (and less of an emphasis on physicality) would have gone over better IMO. Granted, he's only thrown one in-game pass, but I hope there's a limited shelf life there.

Odd ending mashup of scenes with the park vigilante and JJ (whose *****e factor seems to increase with each episode). I was hoping that hit he took on the TD pass would have left his scrawny ass in a heap on the field, mirroring the vigilante. Of course, that's more a reflection of the forementioned *****e factor. The kid has gone from mildly sympathetic to annoying little ****. The feigned 'just be proud of me while I lie to your face' routine is grating.

Yeah, JJ is annoying me too. How can he really sit on a high horse and get upset about his parents not believing him when he is lying?

It made a little sense at first, but then he had the nerve to get indignant about it and shed tears when confronted. At that point, I became a fan of his *****etastic teacher who's intent on busting him ...and I really can't stand that guy.

To add........ his IQ must have been increased at the expense of his parents. How obvious can the reason behind his new "talents" be? .....and yet the parents pursue drug use as an explanation?

I can see JJ becoming a lot like Brainiac 5, in the long run.

Though I personally doubt the writers thought this far ahead, people are forgetting that the brain controls EVERYTHING, including the muscles and more importantly, adrenaline. Someone who has full brain control could conceivably influence his physiology and simply tell his muscles [consciously or not] to grow, or tell it to flex harder. Now, in a normal human, any activity beyond what a muscle group is used to will cause unbelievable muscle pain (most of us probably know this) however, going to back to brain control, you can then tell your body [consciously or not] to not send the usual amount of lactic acid to the muscles.

I don't think his tears were fake in the sense of that situation in the show. I think he was in tears because he's going through his own personal hell to look good to his family, but he's only managing to make them doubt him even more.

how did the football not make sense with a superbrain that doing complex equations in mere fractions of a second. JJ told his sister it wasn't a bout size to play football, in real life doug flutie was a 5"7 quarterback in NFL . Pretty sure in his freshman year of highschool he was a little bigger than JJ. JJ's superbrain is allowing him to solve complex equations on the fly. For example on his first pass he adjusted the way he held the ball in his hands for better trajectory and trajectory is responsible for the flight of the ball which accounts for the accuracy on his passes. My point being his ability with math if nothing else is the most feasible. It's nice to see someone understands that the dumb jock theory is a failed one. The math jj did while playing quarterback is done
by all quarterbacks on a more instinctual level.

Exactly !
The whole family get power but him ( so he said ), all of a sudent he went from kid with a learning ability to genius without doing anything and the parents see nothing strange even the scientist mother.
Anyway, the show is good enough and move at a decent pace so I guess his secret will be revealed soon.

You're kidding with Doug Flutie analogy right....he is a consumate athlete.

So football plays can be broken down into a formula of timing angles etc. I get it and accept the thought, but a very important part of the success of the formula is the speed, and distance of the thrown football, and that's where JJ would fail. Nothing about his intellectual capacity grants him the arm strength to carry out the most crucial calculations of the formula.

There is nothing about a super-brain that grants a 98 lb weakling the arm strength to throw the football at the speed and distance required.

Athletes are made not born, no one is born a athlete it takes a
committment to athletics to become one. As far as arm strength could you tell me how far he threw the ball? I surely could not ,By age 10 I was able to throw a football 30 yards down the field and I had one of the weaker arms among my friends. He could of been throwing a football 10 yards down the field or 30 which is very feasible.

Just saw the pilot last night (online). I like the show so far (good replacement for Heros). Was anyone else disappointed with the ending? When it was revelaed that the mom and dad were talking to a marriage counselor, was anyone else expecting Stan Lee to be the therapist? That would have been so cool. :woot: Too bad that wasn't the case.

Excellent episode. I like that it wasn't Jim who brought down the vigilante but just some ordinary cops.

I still don't get why JJ can't tell his parents he's got super thinking powers. He's pretty stupid for a genius. It's simple, what's worse: lying to your parents about suddenly becoming confident and smart after they looked you straight in the eyes and asked what was going on with you, or telling them that you have powers? They can still be proud of him even if they find out it's all because of his powers. Powers or not, he's still a genius.

I think the daughter is my favorite character of the four. Shes not ashamed or afraid of her powers, knows how to use em and isn't all like "i need to save the city and fight crime". She wants to have fun with her powers, i like that.

i dont get how the mom has superspeed but couldnt just reach back in to the robbers trashbag to get her own ring. but later can run to a keycard and swipe it before anyone can see her on camera.

Convenient writing. It's becoming a theme.

She could have knocked out all four/five of the robbers and no one (save the family) would have been any the wiser, especially in a darkened room.

Unless it's an instance where it strikes me as a truly ridiculous break in what's established, I just shrug my shoulders.

I've stopped watching this now. I'll probably check it out again if you guys have some positive reviews, but the show just didn't captivate me :(

I think it is easier to swipe a card without being seen than it is to open a bag that someone is holding and go through it searching for a ring. If the bag was open and it was the only ring in there...then ya it is easy.

I'll be curious to see if they do any thing special for halloween... it would be funny it they had a scene of them wearing costumes... especially if he has a fight scene one

I think it's been well established that mom wants nothing to do with being hero. She's somewhat of an antihero who will only use her powers when it suits her needs. If her kids were in any real danger I'm sure she would kick down the gates of heaven if need be.
