I’m hearing that the season opener, not unexpectedly, will pick up right where the finale left off, with Emma having vanished after taunting the disembodied Darkness with the Dark One’s dagger. Where exactly the Savior was transported to, however, thus far remains a closely guarded secret (but hey, that’s what Comic-Con is for, amiright?) Also, it will be sooner rather than later that we meet King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Once Upon a Time first look: The Dark Swan rises!

There have been plenty of baddies to contend with over the past four years on Once Upon a Time, but in its fifth season there will be a new Dark One: Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison)—and EW has the exclusive first look at her transformation!

After sacrificing herself in last season’s finale to save Regina (Lana Parrilla) and her family, Emma is now trapped with the powers of an ancient evil. “Every part of her is fighting her dark urges,” executive producer Edward Kitsis says. “What happens when [the darkness] mixes with the lightest magic of all, and will Emma have the strength to fight it?”

The real question is how the powers of the Dark Swan — yes, that’s what they’re calling her! — will differ from Rumplestiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle). “How a Dark One manifests is specific to each person who takes on the mantle,” says EP Adam Horowitz. “Emma will have her own unique spin on what it means to be a Dark One.”

Becoming the Dark One “allows you to have the freedom to have no inhibitions,” Kitsis adds, which could play a role in exactly how Emma uses her powers. “We are going to be exploring love and what happens when you use it as a weapon and what are the things that it makes you do. In the past, we’ve said love is the most powerful magic of all. It makes you do many things you normally wouldn’t think you would.”

But there is hope. “The quest for Merlin is the quest to free Emma,” Kitsis says. Twist: That quest will require a new savior to come forward. Perhaps it’s time for Regina to step into the light?

Once Upon a Time returns Sunday, Sept. 27, at 8 a.m. ET on ABC.

Well, remember, the restaurant first got put there in 1983. I doubt Regina made much of an effort to move things forward over the decades.

Well, obvi. I'm actually surprised that's not the name they're giving her, but I guess they wanna go semi-rhyming with Dark One/Dark Swan.

Anyway...

Kinda weird image. Just looking at the eyes, I kind of assumed they'd be giving us a different angle on her face.

Ursula aside, I don't think they effed up the QoD, they just didn't end up being the dominating force they were made out to be.

IMO, S4 was a helluva season, for the most part.

Cruella was the only one they did justice to. Maleficent got a great costume upgrade but they didn't even use her properly imo. So much could've been done that wasn't. I still wonder if Aurora/Phillip were hiding in their apartment once Mal came to town.

I thought they gave Mal some great story. Not necessarily in her actual flashback episode with her putting the curse on Aurora, but I liked the stuff with Lily.

Not yet, but I can't imagine it'll be long. We just Arthur's actor a few days ago, and these announcements don't tend to be all that far apart from one to the next. I'll be surprised if we don't hear who's Merlin and Guinevere by the end of the week.

Without knowing anything about Elliot Knight (never watched anything that he was on), and just based purely on how he looks, is it maybe a remote possibility that Merlin may be related to Jafar in this universe?
