Actors that play "themselves" in every movie role

i disagree that he is wise and smart
Okay so he is dumb and makes terrible decisions in the overwhelming majority of his films. Also he is very articulate and calm...this thread isn't about literally playing yourself. Thats impossible. Its about playing a variation of yourself.

Seconded. I remember once Howard Stern joked that all you need to do to be an actor is talk somberly the whole time. Did a segment about it. Now every time I watch Bale I think about that segment. Bale's a good actor because he does get into his roles, but I've never seen him really change his character per say. Take Mark Walhberg for example. You have The Departed Mark, Rock Star Mark and The Other Guys Mark. You don't see that from Bale, he's really locked into very angsty dramatic roles. I don't think you'd ever see him do a comedy like we've seen from Eric Bana. He also doesn't make that transition to tough guy as well as Leonardo DiCaprio. He seems to really be locked in that one mode.

Let me get this straight...

You just pretty much said that Bale doesn't change his character from film to film and is stuck playing one particular type of role... and you use MARK I ALWAYS PLAY A COP WAHLBERG as your example of a versatile actor?

Wahlberg is one of the most one-note performers in Hollywood. Every once in a while, he can turn in a decent performance (The Lovely Bones) where he's not playing the smartass tough guy, but nine times out of ten, he just plays different shades of the same hardass. Why? Because when he tries to do something really different, the result is a f**king disaster (THE HAPPENING).

Bale, in contrast, has play MANY diverse characters and the fact that you don't think that he has makes it pretty clear you've probably only seen a handful of his movies. Okay, so he doesn't do screwball comedies. But he's done plenty of other stuff: period drama (Little Women), Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night's Dream), comedy/horror/satire (American Psycho), sci-fi/fantasy (Equilibrium, Reign of Fire), fictional rock n' roll biopic (Velvet Goldmine), musicals (Newsies), anime (Howl's Moving Castle), contemporary drama (Laurel Canyon, Harsh Times), psychological thriller (The Machinist), western (3:10 to Yuma), war (Empire of the Sun, Rescue Dawn), etc.

Watch more than The Dark Knight and Terminator Salvation.
