Filmmaker James Gray, currently out doing press rounds for his Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson-led Amazon exploration drama “The Lost City of Z,” has offered an update on his next project.
A few months ago came word that Gray co-wrote a film called “Ad Astra” with Ethan Ross. That movie revolves around a slightly autistic engineer whose father left two decades ago on a one-way mission to Neptune in order to find signs of alien intelligence. The engineer now sets out to travel the solar system to find his father and discover why his mission failed.
Talking with Collider, Gray was emphatic that “Ad Astra” would very much be his next movie:
“Yes, yes, and yes. I’m terrified by it. The science-fiction genre is so tricky because there are elements of fantasy usually involved, and there are also fantastical elements. What I’m trying to do is the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie and to basically say, ‘Space is awfully hostile to us.’ It’s kind of a Heart of Darkness story about traveling to the outer edge of our solar system. I have a lot of hopes for it but it is certainly ambitious… It starts shooting July 17th, so not too far away. I’m filled with terror, but that’s fine (laughs).”
Pitt and Gray have been trying to work together for years and Pitt was intending to star in “The Lost City of Z” but had to drop out – though he remained onboard as producer.

Ad Astra is the name of a veeeeery old Asimov story. However, I doubt there is a connection.

Story Details From The Upcoming Sci-Fi Epic AD ASTRA

100 years from now, the US government has been building a giant telescope to find life outside our solar system. Engineer/Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) heads the team that’s building the telescope on Earth. His father H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) was the director of a deep space colony that disappeared 18 years ago near one of the moons of Neptune. Their goal was to construct a telescope to search for extraterrestrial life.

After a freak accident that destroys one of Neptune’s moon, Roy is asked by the US government to send a video message to his father. They believe the incident is proof that the colony is still alive and they might be conducting dangerous experiments. To have his message reach Neptune, Roy has to get to the moon to transmit it. It begins a sequence of events that will drive our hero all around our solar system.

“Preacher” and “Loving” star Ruth Negga is set to join Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones in James Gray’s upcoming sci-fi epic “Ad Astra” for New Regency and 20th Century Fox.
The adventure tale follows one man’s journey across a lawless and unforgiving solar system to find his missing father, a renegade scientist who poses a threat to all of mankind.
Negga’s role is being kept secret for now. Gray will direct from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Gross. Pitt, Gray, Rodrigo Teixeira, Anthony Katagas, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are producing.

I wonder when we are going to get a trailer for this.

This really makes it sound like Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now in space.

Can't wait to see the trailer.... The Lost City of Z was so underrated.

I have a feeling this is going to get delayed unless we see a trailer soon.

Yeah, Gray has stated recently he is still a "long ways" from done with the film. He must be really belaboring the editing. Also you wouldn't think a flick with a $50 million budget would be THAT heavy on FX work but there could be a hold up there, I dunno...

Disney has nothing scheduled for September & October in 2019. Ford v Ferrari has already taken a November spot and I don't think Disney will allow another movie between Frozen 2 & Ep. IX so the frame between early August and November seems like the best slot for Ad Astra if Disney decides to release the movie this year.

So, will Ad Astra bow at Cannes?

We're trying, we're certainly hopeful. The issue is a little bit out of our hands cause the shots come in from the VFX houses and right now our delivery date is late April early May, which is really, really cutting it close. You want your visual effects to be so good that nobody thinks about them, that people don't think of them as visual effects. We have hopes, but the whole team, Plan B and Brad [Pitt] and, thankfully, New Regency, have been fantastic through this. We're all just anxious to put out the very best movie, and whether we actually get to make Cannes on May 18 — or whatever the hell the day is — is of secondary concern to getting the film to look exactly right. And I've been wonderfully blessed with great support from them. That's where the focus is now and we’re just sort of keeping our fingers crossed.

Were there concerns with the transition from Fox to Disney?

I don't deal with Fox people on the movie at all, whom I really liked, by the way. I really liked Emma [Watts] and I thought Stacey [Snider] was great. But I only met them a handful of times on the film. So, my exposure to the Disney-Fox thing has been very, very minimal. In fact, I'm sure it’s affecting things and maybe they'll wind up moving the release date as a consequence — by the way, I don't know anything about that, I'm just positing a guess. Who knows what will happen?

How does your star, Brad Pitt, also being producer make a difference?

I've been very lucky cause Brad and I are very, very aligned creatively. And I don't think I would have entered into this if that weren't the case. So, he's been very supportive in a great way, which is why I've had the freedom and the time, really, to focus on getting this right. And he's been a major reason for that.

What are some of the sequences that are still being finalized?

There's a lot of spacewalk stuff. The word "acrobatic" doesn't really apply, but some very complicated rig work and that stuff is going to look amazing. And there's also a lunar rover sequence, which is also basically CG-built, which is going to look terrific, I think. But to make it look perfect doesn't happen overnight.

Judging by the log-line, you have the potential to explore some profound themes.

We did the deep dive, and what I've tried to do is shake up the genre a little bit. It’s all of a piece where you want the film to be dramatically fulfilling and to tackle some profound stuff, cause that's the genre that enables you to do so. The weird thing is the movie has become quite personal for me, which I think is always where you want to go if you want to do work that matters.

Personal how?

A father-son story is always something that has moved me and motivated me in anything I've done, and that is abundantly obvious in this movie, let's put it that way. I don't want to say much more about it cause it would be revealing a lot of the plot.

And next season you’ll be behind the scenes at L.A. Opera, directing a production of The Marriage of Figaro.

I’m not going to treat it any differently. I’m going to try to make sure singers can essentially maximize the drama in the work, or in this case the comedy of the work. I'm not going to focus on what's different about opera. Am I scared? Of course I am. That's part of what any creative endeavor is worth anything. If you're doing things that aren't scary to you, then you're not working hard enough.
