Well never say never... A couple years ago it would be impossible to have something nominated if a movie was released back in February, but then Get Out happened.
Might not happen often, but September-releases can succeed:
"Some September movies have triumphed critically and commercially. In 1987, Fatal Attraction, which opened in wide release on September 18[e] not only succeeded at the box office, staying in theaters through June of the next year[52] and garnering six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.[53] Twelve years later, in 1999, the similarly successful American Beauty, which had been in limited release through September before going wide in October,[54] won that award and four others.[55]"
