Ad Astra

Looks intriguing to me, I like the subtle suggestion that TLJ's character is off doing something nefarious and Brad Pitt - as his son - has possibly been selected to go and find him because he may be able to get through to him on some emotional level.

They definitely are leaving a lot of possible twists out of it, so I am interested to see if there are in fact aliens in it or not.

Calling it now, TLJ's consciousness is in Brad Pitt and he'll end up being the one that destroys rather than had set out to save.

I like the poster.

I do think the trailer is a bit mediocre but the movie itself still seems promising, just don't think the way the trailer is put together is doing it many favors.

But, I mean, I'm never NOT going to be interested in a James Gray sci-fi movie.

Looks more actiony than I expected, but it looks great. Between this and Lucy in the Sky, it's gonna be a great year for space movies.

Could not agree with you more Kane. We are getting these movies all after First Man too which I loved and now with more of them on the way and looking as good as they do I can't wait to watch them.

Comes off a little generic. 15 years ago I would have thought it looked really awesome but now ... eh, just doesn't feel as weird and original compared to other contemporary films. I'm definitely intrigued by the plot though.

I think there could be a pretty cool movie behind that trailer but that trailer makes it hard to tell as it seems like it was put together by a Facebook algorithm that just snatched whatever available piece of exposition from the first half of the movie and then slapped together some action imagery from the back-end with very generic trailer music throughout. Doesn't help that Pitt comes off very flat, but performances in James Gray films are usually not great material for super brief clips as he tends to have his actors lean towards understated more than is typical for the types of movies he makes.

The trailer is probably nowhere near what the thing is about.

My assessment as well. The movie, itself, might be excellent. But the trailer doesn’t really excite.

Not a bad first trailer, I’m very interested. I hear the movie’s been delayed a few times already, glad they’ve finally locked down a release date.

Two of the biggest problems with the trailer are the editing and the music. Gray's films usually have very stately editing and the score for this movie is by Max Richter, who is great, so I think you'll find this trailer is going to be a pretty poor representation of the final product.

Also, I think it's kind of weird we don't even get a glimpse of Ruth Negga's character even though she gets top billing after Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.

Maybe she's a spoiler character.

What specifically seems "generic" about this?

Yeah, I think it looks intriguing. Still have to get around to Lost City of Z, I've been wanting to see that for ages.

If this had been directed by Ari Aster, we could have called this thread Ari Aster’s Ad Astra.
