The point that people are missing is that it was stated by Don Murphy that this film is based on the Generation 1 Transformers. Had he said it was just based on Transformers in general there would not be so many upset fanatics. Due to the fact that there are heaps of different Transformer continuities, there would have been a larger margin for error or more creative space.

I also think he was just telling us what we wanted to hear. Unless when he said G1, in his mind, he could use G1 names for the Tf's but ignore every other aspect, and get away with it..what an idiot he is.

"Based on" is not an indication of approximation, but only a starting point, if they started with G1 and changed things from there, then it is "based on G1" pure and simple, by definition. Most people don't realize what things have cult followings and they rearely tailor their statements based on the fact...

That said, the hardcore fans I know said that BB and LOTR were 'alright' and listed, endlessly the changes from the books to the movies and why movies are inferior and etc... No one who read the books say "they got it right" they just had little things they liked about it.

And on BB, even I was put off by Batman's unbatmanness...

This is true, however DM continuously refer to all the G1 elements, leading peoples opinion to that exactly. He even said that the wont use Soundwave because they were having trouble measuring him up to the G1 character. If it wasn't an issue SW would be in the movie, most likely as Blackout IMO or some other unrelated character.
