AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Indonesia to Singapore missing

How many of these planes were new? I remember reading about third world countries buying used old planes. Hell, the last time I went to Cabo...the goddamn plane had tape on one of the wings.

Sorry, Sam, but you're wrong. Like PB said, it's a new airline with a modern fleet. The pilots may be less experienced than those on more costly and established airlines though.

If you want to talk about old fleets, look no further than the red, white and blue. American Airlines still flies planes daily that were built in the 70's and 80's. For proof, next time you fly United or AA, you'll probably see one of those archaic ash-trays still in the arm-rests.

I'd feel just as nervous flying AA as I would Malaysian Airlines. Maybe moreso...

Whats the deal with these South Pacific Asian countries and missing planes?

Yes, what is the deal.

It's Southeast Asia to be exact if you're talking about Malaysia.

Plane wreckage-like debris has been located in the Java Sea, including life jackets and an emergency door in the colours of AirAsia. Bodies have been spotted as well.

The scenes in the waiting room are heartbreaking as news is filtering in.

A big part of it is the fact that these countries do not get along. At least in the famous missing Malaysian Airlines case, a lot of time was lost because these countries don't have close working relations. For example, China, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia don't share information like radar data (or at least not without first making sure it reveals nothing sensitive).

In Europe or North America that wouldn't be an issue (very close military and civil relations).

Also, Malaysia is a rather corrupt country dominated by one political party. Malaysia Airlines is owned by the state. There's very little transparency and accountability.

Though this may have just been particularly bad weather, and accidents happen.

I'm relieved they located the crash site so the families can have closure and trolls can stop comparing this to MH370.

So why was this found a few days later and MH370 is still nowhere to be found? Does it have to do with the depth of the crash sites? I heard that the area where the plane was eventually found is a lot more shallow then where MH370 might be.

Well, yeah, that and the fact a rogue pilot flew it for 6 hours off-radar in another direction...

Resulting in a search area the size of... well, Earth's Eastern Hemisphere.

That Malaysia Airlines flight is up there with Frederick Valentich's disappearance and the vanishing of the Mary Celeste's crew in weirdness.

Unfortunately we may never know what the hell happened.

I don't know. But even then, we won't know what happened. Whether or not it was foul play, will always be in question.
