Tyler Perry and James Patterson Finalize Deal for ALEX CROSS Sequel, DOUBLE CROSS

With Rob Cohen’s adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross opening in theaters this weekend, you might have thought we’d have to wait to gauge audience response to Tyler Perry in Morgan Freeman’s former role before moving ahead with sequels. Think again. Perry and Patterson are reportedly in the final stages of sealing a deal for the planned sequel, Double Cross. Another adaptation from Patterson’s series, this would return Perry to the title role of the crime solver faced with yet another serial killing spree. Not bad for being the first picture that Perry didn’t direct, produce or write. Hit the jump for more on Double Cross.

Deadline reports that Perry and Patterson have all but sealed the deal on the Alex Cross sequel, Double Cross. Although Perry refused the option to write, direct or produce the current film, there is no word yet on whether or not he’ll take over one of those duties for the sequel. The box office and critical response this weekend will surely help to iron out that question.
Here’s the book description [with potential spoilers] for Patterson’s Double Cross (via Amazon):
Just when Alex thought his life was calming down into a routine of patients and therapy sessions, he finds himself back in the game–this time to catch a criminal mastermind like no other.
A spate of elaborate murders in Washington D.C. have the whole East Coast on edge. They are like nothing Alex Cross and his new girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, have ever seen. With each murder, the case becomes increasingly complex. There’s only one thing Alex knows: the killer adores an audience.
As victims are made into gruesome spectacles citywide, inducing a media hysteria, it becomes clear to Alex that the man he’s after is a genius of terror–and he’s after fame. The killer has the whole city by its strings–and he’ll stop at nothing to become the most terrifying star that Washington D.C. has ever seen.

So in other words:

His wife (Carmen Ejogo) dies in the film. Or divorces him because she's tired of his life as a detective.

It seems it's ok that Elba didn't get the role.

Elba's been in enough bad movies, better he doesn't work with Rob Cohen.

Hopefully Pacific Rim is awesome and we can start seeing him in good movies from now on.

It seems it's ok that Elba didn't get the role.

Yeah, after reading some of the reviews it seems like Tyler Perry is the least of this movie's problems. I don't think Elba could've saved this one.

Just wait until the sequel:

Don't double cross Alex cross!

Was Fox at least good?

EW called this "Visually fugly".

And that was one of the nicer insults used in their review.

Ouch.

The movie feels like it's two decades behind. This would be right at home in the late 1990s, not in 2012 -- from the dialogue, casting Edward Burns of all people, and even the choice of rap songs. And yes, the movie is unattractively shot... at least when Perry directs his films they're nice to look at.

This is utterly terrible, and this is coming from someone who enjoyed Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor as a guilty pleasure.

Dustin Rowles of Pajiba destroyed this movie in his review. I don't always agree with him, but something tells me I would come out of this movie thinking the same things he did. I won't post the link due to profanity, but here's a snippet:

"Alex Cross is not a movie inasmuch as its a mash-up of platitudes that people yell in detective thrillers as performed by a bucket of a**holes. It’s an ungodly, incoherent atrociously acted mess of a film written by psychopathically dumb people who couldn’t sell a line to a three-sided square."

Oh, and if you're curious about Fox's performance, here's what Rowles had to say:

"If you could combine the overacting talents of Vincent D’Onofrio and Billy Zane and the charisma of a flaccid penis you’d have the rough approximation of Fox’s Picasso character."

The Examiner praised Matthew Fox.

''The sole reason you should see "Alex Cross" is for Matthew Fox. Fox is a highly skilled assassin with no name, but is known as "Picasso" for the art he leaves at the scene of the crime. He has an infatuation for using a drug called TTX, which leaves his victim's completely helpless but aware of the torture he puts them through. Fox is extremely lean and pure muscle in the film. Not only is his appearance unusual for him, but so is his performance. His body movements are so peculiar, his cold stare makes the hair on your arms stand up, and you just know something intense is about to occur whenever that vein in the middle of his forehead pops out. While Fox will probably be best known for "Lost," "Alex Cross" is certainly a game changer for him as Picasso is one of the most memorable and chilling villains of the year.''

I figured we would at the least get an intense performance from Fox.

If anything comes out of it, Fox should get some more roles where he plays outside the box.

Not everyone is going to agree, but Fox knocked it out of the park. A good, solid returning performance for him. Hopefully, World War Z will have a meatier script for Fox because the script to Alex Cross was horrid.

People tend to forget he other characters Tyler Perry play. Uncle Joe in particular. Tyler has range
