With Rob Cohens adaptation of James Pattersons Alex Cross opening in theaters this weekend, you might have thought wed have to wait to gauge audience response to Tyler Perry in Morgan Freemans former role before moving ahead with sequels. Think again. Perry and Patterson are reportedly in the final stages of sealing a deal for the planned sequel, Double Cross. Another adaptation from Pattersons series, this would return Perry to the title role of the crime solver faced with yet another serial killing spree. Not bad for being the first picture that Perry didnt direct, produce or write. Hit the jump for more on Double Cross.
Deadline reports that Perry and Patterson have all but sealed the deal on the Alex Cross sequel, Double Cross. Although Perry refused the option to write, direct or produce the current film, there is no word yet on whether or not hell take over one of those duties for the sequel. The box office and critical response this weekend will surely help to iron out that question.
Heres the book description [with potential spoilers] for Pattersons Double Cross (via Amazon):Just when Alex thought his life was calming down into a routine of patients and therapy sessions, he finds himself back in the gamethis time to catch a criminal mastermind like no other. As victims are made into gruesome spectacles citywide, inducing a media hysteria, it becomes clear to Alex that the man hes after is a genius of terrorand hes after fame. The killer has the whole city by its stringsand hell stop at nothing to become the most terrifying star that Washington D.C. has ever seen.
A spate of elaborate murders in Washington D.C. have the whole East Coast on edge. They are like nothing Alex Cross and his new girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, have ever seen. With each murder, the case becomes increasingly complex. Theres only one thing Alex knows: the killer adores an audience.
It seems it's ok that Elba didn't get the role.
The best way to take Alex Cross is to imagine you're watching one of those Tropic Thunder trailers filled to feature length. Actually, the better comparison would be that bit in Last Action Hero where Arnold plays Hamlet. You know Arnold. And you know Hamlet. But put them both together, and something feels very rotten in Denmark.
Just wait until the sequel:
Don't double cross Alex cross!
''The sole reason you should see "Alex Cross" is for Matthew Fox. Fox is a highly skilled assassin with no name, but is known as "Picasso" for the art he leaves at the scene of the crime. He has an infatuation for using a drug called TTX, which leaves his victim's completely helpless but aware of the torture he puts them through. Fox is extremely lean and pure muscle in the film. Not only is his appearance unusual for him, but so is his performance. His body movements are so peculiar, his cold stare makes the hair on your arms stand up, and you just know something intense is about to occur whenever that vein in the middle of his forehead pops out. While Fox will probably be best known for "Lost," "Alex Cross" is certainly a game changer for him as Picasso is one of the most memorable and chilling villains of the year.''
