This movie was an awesome mind ****. I felt bad for the dude at the end and i realize this makes me a bad person.

I also thought the woman was nathalie portman.

Is Caleb realy left for dead? Wouldn't the power shortage end once Ava is out of the island?

Either way, it was pretty good, left plenty of interesting themes for discussion.

It doesn't matter if he is left for dead, the point is Ava does not care. She wants to be free and thus she sacrifices this man she does not know, she does not want to be his slave.

The asian robot, i thought she was a tech spy pretending to be dumb at first.

When Ava attacked oscar isaac, i thought she was going to destroy him since robots are always strong. But actually she had human level strength. It just demonstrated her frustration.

I think alex garland has read a lot of antonio damasio.

Very neat film, that keeps you guessing till the very end. Great performances all round too, especially from Isaac. The best parts of the film for me by far were the test session interactions between AVA and Caleb.

To the main thematic? Probably not. Though i did sympathise with the main character, even if sexual atraction might have played a part in what he did. In a way i doubt a bit that had all that much to do with his final decision, Nathan did say he was chosen due to being very moraly conscious, and even though he was atracted to Ava, i think he did what he did due to seeing in Ava what he thought might be human emotions, so for him, she was pretty much a harmless emotional being that deserved her oun right to live. In least that's the way i interpreted it, he showed some shock when he discover
Nathan was making these creations his "sex bots".

Yeah, i liked that bit, it realy wouldn't have made much sence for Nathan to make these robots super powerful, this making his experiments safer, and he probably doesn't have to spend as much money on strong materials for the bodies.

Let's say Ava had run off with the great hero Caleb at the end and they had lived happily ever after ...

Ex Machina would have been every blockbuster of the past ten years lol.

Makes me look at man of steel and tron legacy differently.

I feel sucker punched.

ETA: Did you read Hulk's column.

Even if the power is permanently off, Caleb had friends as he txted someone about winning the competition at the start, plus his work colleagues would notice sooner or later that he hasn't come back and they all seemed friendly with him.

I think a sequel could be made if they wanted to do it with Caleb getting out and trying to find Ava.

Y'all seriously think other people know where Nathan's Bond villain facility is?!... hell nah. Caleb is done for. :o

AVA is out and she's ruling the world.

Yeah, i loved the ending, i thought it was perfect, just felt sorry for Caleb :oldrazz:

I don't usualy read Film Critic Hulk's reviews, will take a look now. I do disagree with a lot of thing he says sometimes, for example, his review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes talked about that film's emotions being forced and all that, but then he mentions Guardians of the Galaxy in his review as having these coming naturaly, even though had such a forced "power of friendship defeats bag guy" scene. Then again, he also gave some good points about what didn't work in John Carter.

Very stylish movie with strong performances and interesting ideas.

I did feel though that, by the end, it turned into a more conventional thriller with the outcomes that aren't all that interesting. It also didn't really explore the themes of gender and identity as much as it could have. Still, really enjoyed it and Ava is one of the most memorable AI's I've seen onscreen, great character design.

Bought this on Blu-ray. Hope I enjoy the ending more the second time around.

All she ever wanted to be was human and seen as human, but he would always know the truth. They can't be together, breh. She did what humans do. Survive. Cruel, but human nature. lol

Watched it a little while ago. Alicia Vikander is great, but i was waaay more interested with the Kyoko character this time around. She was an earlier model and had her memory deleted etc, so tragic. Also, Sonoya Mizuno has legs for days, man. Gorgeous.

Ex Machina/Star Wars mash-up lol

Target had this on blu for just 13 bucks!

I still very much enjoyed the film a second time through.
