Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

Ripley died in Alien 3, got her DNA mixed in a clone in Alien 4 and ended on a devasted Earth at the end of the movie.
Time to give her a rest.

Hideo Kojima be like:

They also have the opportunity to go into interesting directions with Andy. We haven't had a lot of androids carrying over from film to film before with only David being the big one. (You could say Bishop in Alien 3 but that's just a one off scene) And David was quite sinister in his first one so it's not really surprising we got more of that in Covenant. I hope we get more Andy because he was so great.

Went to see it over the weekend.

My thoughts:
It's better than most of the sequels/prequels since the original two films but still felt a bit... meh. A lot of the characters I just didn't care about, parts seemed overly rushed, too many forced moments with unnecessary callbacks etc.. There have been certain elements that I have loved and hated from each sequel/prequel but this kind of continued the that similar trend. I had hoped this would be more like the Alien Isolation Video Game with more horror. But even that element lacked.

Left wanting more, but not from this story.

Mostly enjoyed this, but I found pretty much every single callback to the first two films to be distracting and silly, and you-know-who's appearance was shockingly bad.

Spaeny was great. Really hope we get a sequel with her.

Yes. I've had a big Cailee Spaeny year with Civil War and this, plus watching Devs for the first time; and she's in Knives Out 3 as well which will be fun.

I am already sick to DEATH of seeing people talk about her being cast for Last of Us though. I swear I see it everywhere. It's both far too late, and very revealing that she's suddenly the obvious choice only after appearing in a film that nerds have actually watched.

Yeah, her career has really taken off in the past year. Apart from this and Civil War, I just watched her in Priscilla a few days back and she was really great in it.

As for TLOU, I've seen a lot of that as well. She could have been a great Ellie had they shot it back in 2018-2019. She also wasn't a complete unknown back then either. Her first big movie was Pacific Rim: Uprising which flew under the radar.

As it is there are a few actresses who would have done great as Ellie but Bella Ramsey's done a great job herself.

Yeah I have known Spaeny since Pacific Rim 2 and Bad Times at the El Royale. She would have made a great Ellie but Bella Ramsey blew me away in that role and I can't wait to see what she does with the older Ellie from TLOU2.

I wish studios would move on from these hollow tricks. I want to return to the world that captivated me. So many of these callbacks are actually detrimental to the experience, because they only serve to remind you of the film you liked decades ago. I'm pulled out of the film to watch it glaze another one.

I've seen Bad Times but don't remember Spaeny in it. Will have to give it a rewatch some time.

She was Dakota Johnson's little sister who she was rescuing from Chris Hemsworths character

This fell more in line with the 90s/10s Alien films then the OGs for me quality wise. It had this schlocky feel and opened up rushing to just get into the action while disregarding character and actually nuanced set up. Everyone was fairly one-dimensional.

But it’s mostly entertaining. The whole Holm situation worked into the story well enough, but it could’ve been any old android. It’s just an odd choice to try and connect it to a 40 year old film for no reason. The last 45mins felt like an entirely different film pacing wise. It felt so long. Needing to have both the OG Alien design and creating a new one felt a little unnecessary and kinda dragged it along imo.

Jonsson was quite good though, and the rest of the cast were fine enough. I liked Merced and Speaney’s contributions.

Ok saw it last night and loved it. I really love that it did with autistic people what the original film did for women action heroes.

I think they “get your hands off her you *****” line could have been skipped. It was a bit nostalgic and didn’t quite work well. But the ending, wow. I’ve never heard all the women in the audience retch before”

Did you know who really die at the end of this movie after injecting themselves, & getting on munched at the end of this movie? No body of that person was shown at the end. Will the person come back to life on the way to that planet? Left open for a sequel?

There you go, all those people who said you had to dumb it down to make it profitable are eating s**t now
