Comics Am I being Cynical?

Aloha,
Just happened to watch Spawn on TV today and it suddenly hit me. In this marketing comic book world that we live in, did Marvel attempt to tap into the Spawn comic book demographic with One More Day? Al Simmons makes a deal with the devil in the name of love of a woman. Peter and MJ make a deal with Mephisto out of love for Aunt May.There was a time when Spawn was the number one comic for the month. There is a market out there that has accepted a character who out of love has made a deal with the devil. Could this also be Marvel's way of thumbing their nose up at McFarlane.

Honestly, DT, if they'd have even given that much thought to OMD... they wouldn't have done it.
It was just stupid, lazy, inconsiderate (for fans and those -like me- who used to be fans) storytelling. I've been looking at some other boards and out of 100s of posts, I can't count the number of people happy about Pete's deal with the Devil on my hands. It's made me tired of comics.

LOL . . . I don't think Marvel's hoping to tap into the Spawn market at all. If this was 1995, I'd say "hey, you're onto something!" But Spawn hasn't had numbers to envy in . . . gee, I don't know how long.

Defenitley both, IMO. Peter would never let what happen to his Uncle happen to anybody again.

I know Spawn is not selling like it used to, what I'm talking about is the People who used to buy Spawn are people who have already accepted a hero who has made a deal with the devil.Just like the people who saw the Ghost Rider movie.

(I'm actually talking about the comic Johnny Blaze, who summoned Satan, since it could be argued that the movie version didn't really believe Peter Fonda was the Devil. I do... but I've seen him on acid...)

I'll answer in two ways:
1) Our Pete, the one that old timers like us identify as Spider-Man is probably equally moved by the thought of both. While it's been many decades since Ben's death in our time... it's hardly been one decade for Pete. I'm sure, like all people, Pete has different areas of feeling for each, with Ben holding a place of special place of admiration and respect, while May holds his maternal heartstrings.

2) The clown who's in the books now, obviously loves May more or he'd have thrown Ben into his Pact with the Devil. After all... if you're dealing with Mephisto...

Yeah...why didnt he just have it so the burglar never shot Uncle Ben? that would have literally fixed everything wrong with his life. He would have been a succesful TV star, his aunt and uncle would still be alive...

You weren't moved by his relationship with Ashley and conflicts with the sympiote to kill her? Or his guilt in wanting to take responsibilty for Carnage enough to team up with his most hated foe, who he still kind of wanted to kill and blamed for his life all going to hell? Or the fact that his beef with Spider-man, pre-symbiote, was developed on screen over several episodes, rather than off-screen like in the comics or ******edly like in the movie?

The stuff with carnage was all incredibly bad. They should have left him in space.

as for his 'hating' of spiderman, it's still fairly weak. Eddie ultimately brought it all on himself.

The symbiote half was fine, the eddie section was whiny. Venom's torment was good but really this is the sort of character you show in an one off arc and you pretty much maximise his entire use. Repeated usages are just lame.

after their second major arc in the comics where parker knocks him out and walks off in his panties, there's nothing more to do with him.

in comparison to the film and the comics, it was better but still, he's a one shot story best if wrapped up in a lil bow and left.

just like morlun was when he was first introduced.

repeated usage just weakens him.

CAn you imagine if Pete had married REAL young? His origin would have played out diffrently!

Mephisto would have shown up wanting his marriage and Uncle Ben would still be alive!!

That'd make a grand WHAT IF?...What If Peter HAd Married Young!

But yeh, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Uncle Ben must be real proud...that his nephew is now dealing with the devil.
