Am I the only one who prefers the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League version?

I just finished reading Formerly Known as the Justice League and I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League and they brought back memories! I think one of my favorite runs in comic history is the Justice League International rebirth. Even when I wasn't collecting, I saved the first 20-30 issues of that just so I could read them again whenever I needed a laugh. :woot:

Guy Gardner getting his butt kicked by Batman. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. Poor innocent Captain Marvel (and now Mary Marvel) caught in the immature crossfire. Some of the funniest bad guys who were out for anything but world domination. Fire and Ice. Some of the mature guys like Doctor Fate trying to figure out how to communicate with that bunch. Great stuff!

Lesser known heroes who are far, far, far from perfect and some immature humor Conan O'Brian style thrown into the mix. That's how I like them! :woot:

While there's definitely a place for the "back to basics" version of the recent JLA with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and all the bigshots, I miss the old Justice League. Yes, it had a little overkill. Too many offshoot titles. Just like any popular title, it goes down the trash when Marvel or DC decide to exploit it for all its worth. And when the humor didn't work, it made me want to read something closer to the more recent JLA, but when Giffen & DeMatteis were on fire, those were some terrific books to read! :hyper:

(P.S. After all those great memories, how the heck do you take that Maxwell Lord and make him into the one that had his neck broken by Wonder Woman? And then a picture of Blue Beetle getting his blown in pieces by Lord! What a shame. Oh well.)

Absolutely not. That is, to this day, still my favorite JLA run ever.

Brilliantly funny, and the pathos hit at all the right times when it needed to. The Despero fight and the other universe conquering villains coming to DC Earth are two of the most brutal fight scenes I've seen yet.

Plus, it turned me into a HUGE fan of Guy.

The JLI was the best. By far my favorite run. And by far the best use of Batman in a League book I've ever seen. And if you think it's all just dumb humor (which I can't understand being a bad thing in the first place), read the issue where J'onn fights off an entire zombie apocalypse by himself. Downright creepy.

I prefer the Giffen/DeMatteis League to the current League, but the epic Morrison/Waid/Kelly era is still my favorite.

I loved that era.
Made me a Guy Gardner fan!
I still love the Batman-Guy fight!

I adore that League, not sure if it is my favourite because I love Morrison/Waid/Kelly just as much. I think I appreciate the fact they did something completely different and took a risk with the line-up which paid off.

Also, it manages to be hilarious and action packed and dramatic. All at the same time.

It's my favorite version of the League, so...No, you a ain't the only one.

It's not my favorite version, but it's certainly my favorite run. It was just such a great group of personalities and compelling storylines.

Except for the fact that JLI was actually funny.

Aw, you don't like my comments? That makes me so sa--oh wait, I don't have to care. Already it's an improvement. :)

Not sure if I'd go as far to say I PREFER it, but it's definately one of the best versions of the League.

Hell, I think the best version of the League would have the JLI mentallity of "regular, funny people in superhero costumes" mixed with the epicness of the Morrison/Kelly run.

...Aquaman?

Really?

He's a JLA mainstay that's more often than not actually lead the team.
Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman are JLA mainstays yet people (myself included, actually) have little problem shrugging them off for the JLI.

But Jonn...Jonn is super special.

Don't forget "nice-guy" Guy Gardner. One of my favorite moments of the run occurred when Batman had discovered listening devices in the League's Russian embassy, and had told Guy about it. Guy then proceeded to almost tell this to Rocket Red (I think it was Rocket Red) before Batman elbows him hard. Guy ends up saying "Batman just found...the bathroom! Man, that guy is thorough," or something like that.

Yeah, but it was never the Justice League. It was just a bunch of goof-offs, and for some reason, Batman.

I think they were sending a little bit of a message.

All dumb humor was a bad thing for a League book. I'm all for books like Battle Pope and whatehaveyou, but not in the Justice League.

Which issue did J'onn fight off a zombie apocalypse?

it was great because it seemed to be so "real worldish" they had REAL interactions that were 100% believable.

Even if Guy Gardner was your favorite character you can't TELL ME you didnt crack up when batman knocked him out with one punch.

or when they went up against the greyman, and Beetle said "Theres HUNDREDS OF THEM" and Booster says "no its not that many let me see..1..2..3..4..5.."
