Steve Martin is set to play Peter Sellars role in a new Pink Panther movie. I like Steve Martin, but I can't say enough of how totally wrong he is for this part.

It's up there with Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget (WTF?!) and Leslie Neilsen as Mr Magoo.

It should be Steve Coogan as Inspector Cleseau, he's the new Peter Sellers.

didn't even knew they were doing another Pink Panther and Steve as Inspector Jacques Clouseau? I don't think so

I'll shall reserve judgement for now, but I think it is positive, especially if Steve Martin can get his game on and do the kind of acting he was doing 20 years ago, then I think he'd do a fair job!......

The guy might be good

They're making the Pink Panther?!?! Awesome! :D

I think that Steve Martin is a great comic, but his humour is very different from Peter Sellers. Sellers was one of the greatets comics in cinema story with Chaplin, Keaton, Marx brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Lewis, Hope, Kaye, etc. Martin is very good, but not at his level. And his way of comic acting is very diferent from Peter's. I think that Rowan Atkinson would be a better choices. Even i can see more serious actors like Kevin Kline and Geofrey Rush as inspector Closseau. Rush did an excellent job playing The Peter Sellers's biography movie.

Sellers' best film was by far Dr. Strangelove. MEIN FUHRER! I CAN WALK!

Yeah, Max. Peter's performance in doctor strangelove was one of the best peformances, comic or serious, that i have ever seen, his way of playing the three diferent characters was brillaint.

Hmmm Steves comedy style has kind of slipped in the past few years and hes been taking more mature roles, his old style would have still been abit oddly placed for the part so i dont know, i`ll see when i see the trailer. :D

Now that you mention it, I think Kevin Kline would be a much better choice.

He's better than the rumor of Chris Rock a couple of months back in the role....

And he's also better than Mike Myers... who was also in talks for the role too...I think.

But... I think the guy that plays Mr. Bean is the best choice...

Thing is, I've never really liked Steve Martin when he's playng a zany, wierd guy, with the exception of The Jerk. I like him better when he plays a regular guy like in Parenthood, or Father Of The Bride. When he plays weird guys he always overdoes it. I like the ideas of Kevin Kline, and Geofrey Rush. Heck, if they went for a French actor, I think Jean Reno could do it.

now i havent seen any of the pink panther movies either, and didnt think they had much of an impact on any audiences today.
funny enough i see quite the turnout in this thread, just seems things only get a mention when something new is about to strike.
well anyways i despised the idea of mike myers in anything, he should of rounded off his waynes world movies, but oh no got to popular for that, and goes off with his scottish ascent into every movie he does. so no on him, yes.
with the mention of jean reno above, as well as the mentions of Rush as well, i think between them would be the best choice.
steve martin kinda got back into the game, and has been cast in everything lately, which isnt so great when actors are abused with like 4 releases in a year.

just had a casting idea, i doubt he would do it. but
dustin hoffman.

well it seems i'm in the minority, but when i first heard that Martin was cast for the role, i was one of the few who actually thought it was a great idea... i've always been a fan of Steve Martin (particularly of his earlier work), and i've always liked the Pink Panther films, so when i heard about this, i was genuinely excited...

and i must say that after seeing the film, i'm not the least bit let down... the pacing and style was different from the Sellers films, sure, but i think it would've flopped if they'd tried to make it too much like those earlier films... that is, i like the fact that it's different, and i like the fact that Clouseau's character even changed a little... if Martin had tried too hard to be like Sellers, it would've come off cheap, but instead, Martin owned the role and made it his own... not only was the accent different, but Clouseau actually solved the mystery on his own, proving he's not as bumbling as everyone thought... and i can't remember the last film that made me laugh so hard! this was very well done, IMO, and i sincerely hope there's a sequel!

anyone else care to share their thoughts on the subject???

It was one of the worst comedies 2005.
well it certainly couldn't have been one of the BEST of 2005, since it wasn't even released until 2006! :p

anyway, as i said, i'm apparently in the minority... but then, it did do pretty well at the box office... :D

Steve Martin is horrible for Inspector Cleuso. I think the only reason the PP remake got made was because some producer overheard Martin doing a Cleuso impression at some rich party somewhere and said "Wow, we've got to use this in a movie!" With Peter Sellers, I totally believed he was Cleuso. With Steve Martin, he's anything but a character actor, so when he plays Cleuso it seems like nothing more than Steve Martin with a fake french accent.

i'll agree that the accent seemed a bit put-on at times, but i still think he did a good job... the thing is, while they paid homage to Sellers a couple times, Martin's character was not really meant to be the same character Sellers played, and i think that's evident in the way the character was both written and portrayed... he has a different accent, he looks/dresses differently, he has a different way of carrying himself, the continuity doesn't fit in several places, and he's smarter than Sellers' character got credit for... as i said above, if he'd tried to be exactly like Peter Sellers, it just wouldn't have worked, but i love the fact that Martin made the character his own... at the very least, Martin did a better job as Clouseau than Alan Arkin, and was a better replacement for Sellers than Ted Wass or Roberto Benigni!
