Who says you have to "rely" on both?
Novels require a bit of an imagination, sure, but can often times include way more detail and info than a dozen comics put together. (and at a cheaper price)...
You're right. But I'm of the brand of people who don't mind keeping certain stories to their respective mediums of storytelling. I usually avoid reading comic book adaptations of any prose texts and the same goes for film adaptations of comics or novels based on the comics I read.
Like Alan Moore said (and I quote loosely here

And yeah, I know we're talking about novels based on comic book characters, but I certainly know that as a creator, I create what I create specifically in the context of the medium I want those characters to be presented in. In any other medium, it'd just be...not quite right.
