Sony Screen Gems Brings Back 'The Stepfather'

Sony Screen Gems is really getting under my skin... I think their publicity department is fantastic, phenomenal for that matter, but how bad are their remakes? Seriously? Look at the laundry list of wasted remakes: The Fog, When a Stranger Calls, The Grudge and more coming. So everytime a new remake is announced over at Screen Gems, I think an angel dies and my heart breaks. Sure the numbers do wonders for our genre, but who cares when the horror fans don't like the horror movie? Anyways, tonight it was announced that the Gems' next remake will be of the 1987 classic film The Stepfather. Read on for the skinny...

Variety reports:

Screen Gems has acquired remake rights to 1987 horror pic "The Stepfather" for Greg Mooradian and Maverick Films to produce. In the original "Stepfather," which was based on a true story, Terry O'Quinn ("Lost") plays a seemingly normal man, who wants the perfect family. When they don't measure up, he eliminates them and moves on to find his next perfect family.

New pic is being produced by Mooradian and Maverick's Mark Morgan and Guy Oseary. Robert Green of Granada exec produces.

Mooradian, Morgan and Oseary also are producers on Fox 2000's "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief," based on the children's book by Rick Riordan.

Maverick's slate includes remake "My Sassy Girl," being produced with Vertigo and Gold Circle Films, and "The Stanford Prison Experiment."

Screen Gems' upcoming releases include "The Covenant" and "Vacancy."

The thing is, most of these remakes, younger kids have never seen, so the only ones complaining are the older ones that won't see it. But the demographic that they're trying to grab will.

Never heard of it so I could care less but I it will be more than likely as bad as the last remakes they did. Which I sadly saw oh WASC was so bad.

Exactly. it's only theolder people complaining. i'll admit outof the recent amount of remakes out i've never seen the orginals. such as the amittyville horror, house of wax,the fog, the longest yard, and the grudge. caue these are the type of movies that attrack the younger audiences.

the grudge wasnt a remake of an older movie

i think they meant its a remake of the other movie based on the u.s. grudge.

nice av, bum

oh yeah, remake. boo.

^Your absolutely right.

The poster for the stepfather just looks so damn funny. Especially the tagline.

Can a mod change the name of this thread?

Haha, that is off the chain. That could be taken as either a horror tagline or a porn tagline.

lmao, if seems more pornm then horror.

I just can't help but laugh everyime i see the tagline or even say it out load.

Can't people make new things and not remakes? Seriously this sucks!

I've known that since last year. Its from the team behind the prom night remake.

But from people who've read the script say its suspenseful at the end.

I've known it was going to be rated that when they started production also, but I kinda hoped they would have changed their minds. I liked Stepfather 2.

I don't know how anyones suppose to take this serious with that tagline?

The Trailer better be good>And this is from a person who sees almost all remakes.

The sorority row remake is a hard R rating.

The tagline is lame. "This Fall..Daddy's Home" That's the best they could come up with? "Obay Thy Father" would have been better.

That's a rather...unique poster, not sure how I feel about it.

I'm sort of looking forward to it despite the Pg-13 rating, it'll get slaughtered if it comes out anywhere near SAW VI though, and judging from the October release it probably will.

Like I said i almost see remakes. I'll have to see the trailer to judge.

I think it comes out October 16 or 17.

I have no attachment to the original, having never seen it, but the new guy will never be as kickass as Terry O'Quinn.
